Eric R. Pratt (born January 23,1964) is a Minnesota politician and member of the Minnesota Senate. A member of the Republican Party of Minnesota,he represents District 55 in the southwestern Twin Cities metropolitan area.
Pratt's family moved to Prior Lake,Minnesota in 1978,where he graduated from Prior Lake High School. [1] His father was a commercial banker for Bank of America and a commercial real estate broker. His mother taught elementary school for 40 years,finishing her career in Shakopee,Minnesota.
He attended the University of Colorado Boulder,graduating in 1987 with a B.A. in economics,and the University of St. Thomas,graduating in 1993 with an M.B.A. [2] Pratt played outside linebacker for the University of Colorado Buffaloes under Hall of Fame head coach Bill McCartney. He was also a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.
He was a member of the Prior Lake-Savage School Board from 2000 to 2012 and served as its chair. [1] [2]
Pratt was elected to the Minnesota Senate in 2012, [3] winning with 55% of the vote over Kathy Busch in the general election on November 6,2012. [4] He was reelected on November 6,2016,over Ali C. Ali with 69% of the vote. In 2020 he won reelected over DFL nominee Sahra Odowa with 62% of the vote. [5]
Following the 2016 Minnesota Senate election,Senator Pratt chaired the Education Policy committee where,in 2017,he led significant reforms to how teachers are licensed based on a report from the Legislative Auditor. He has been an advocate for public education while keeping his primary focus on ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed in the classroom. He has been recognized for his bipartisan efforts to make public education less political and willingness to take on tough issues,such as special education.
In the 90th and 91st Minnesota Legislature he was an Assistant Majority Leader. He was also a Majority Whip in the 91st Minnesota Legislature.
Senator Pratt has been effective at getting bills signed into law in a divided government. He led the effort to provide disaster relief to communities ravaged by floods in 2014. In 2017 he passed Real ID authorization,which allows Minnesota driver's licenses to be used to board airplanes and enter federal buildings. In 2018 he worked with bankers,realtors,Legal Aid and the renewable energy industry to pass nation-leading consumer protections for PACE home improvement financing. Pratt also led a bipartisan effort to restructure the Metropolitan Council in an effort to bring the body into compliance with the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act for federally-funded transportation projects.
Pratt and his wife have two children and reside in Prior Lake,Minnesota. Pratt was a financial services risk manager. [3]
Scott County is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census,the population was 150,928. Its county seat is Shakopee. Shakopee is also the largest city in Scott County,the twenty-third-largest city in Minnesota,and the sixteenth-largest Twin Cities suburb. The county was organized in 1853 and named in honor of General Winfield Scott. Scott County is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington,MN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is a member of the Metropolitan Council,and shares many of the council's concerns about responsible growth management,advocating for progressive development concepts such as clustering,open-space design,and the preservation of open space and rural/agricultural land.
Prior Lake is an exurban city 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Minneapolis seated next to Savage and Shakopee in Scott County in the state of Minnesota. Surrounding the shores of Lower and Upper Prior Lake,the city lies south of the Minnesota River in an area known as RiverSouth and establishes the urban fringe of the south-southwest portion of Minneapolis-St. Paul,the sixteenth largest metropolitan area in the United States. The population of Prior Lake was 22,796 at the 2010 census.
Satveer Singh Chaudhary is an American criminal and immigration lawyer. He is also a politician and a former member of the Minnesota State Senate and the Minnesota House of Representatives serving from 1996 to 2010. During his fourteen-year tenure,Chaudhary represented portions of Anoka and Ramsey counties in the northern Minneapolis and St Paul metropolitan area. The Senate District at the time of his departure from politics was known as Senate District 50. However,Chaudhary also represented the area in the Minnesota House from 1997-2000 as District 52A;and in the Senate from 2001 to 2002 as Senate District 52. While in office,Chaudhary served as a member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party,was the first Asian American legislator in Minnesota history. He was also the first South Asian senator in American history and for a time was the highest ranking political official of South Asian descent,as well as one of the youngest senators in that state's history.
Torrey Westrom is a Minnesota politician and member of the Minnesota Senate. The 1st Minnesota Legislature first convened on December 2,1857. The 37 members of the Minnesota Senate and the 80 members of the Minnesota House of Representatives were elected during the General Election of October 13,1857. Although the Constitution of the State of Minnesota,which had been adopted by the voters at the 1857 general election,was not ratified by the United States Senate until May 11,1858,this was the first legislature of the State of Minnesota to convene in conformity with the state constitution.
