Andrew R. Lang is an American politician and Republican member of the Minnesota Senate. He represents District 17,which includes portions of Chippewa,Kandiyohi,Renville,and Swift Counties in west-central Minnesota. Lang is a major in the Minnesota Army National Guard.
Lang grew up in Kandiyohi,Minnesota,and graduated from Willmar High School in 1997. He attended Ridgewater College before transferring to St. Cloud State University,where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in aviation science and management. [1]
Lang joined the Minnesota Army National Guard in 2002 and became a commissioned officer in 2003. He was stationed in Balad,Iraq,from April 2007 to August 2008. In June 2014,he participated in Operation Enduring Freedom and later Operation Inherent Resolve. Lang is a major and a logistics officer in the 34th Aviation Brigade. [1] In addition to flying Black Hawk helicopters for the National Guard,he is a pilot for North Memorial Health Air Care. [2] [3] He was previously the parks supervisor for Renville County. [1]
In his first run for public office,Lang was elected to the Minnesota Senate in 2016,defeating DFL incumbent Lyle Koenen. [4] Lang serves as vice chair of the Senate Veterans and Military Affairs Finance and Policy Committee. [5]
Lang and his wife,Susan,have two children and reside in Olivia. [5] They are members of the Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church in Olivia. [1]

The 2000 United States Senate election in Minnesota was held on November 7,2000,to select a U.S. senator from the state of Minnesota. The race pitted incumbent Republican Senator Rod Grams against former Minnesota State Auditor Mark Dayton. Dayton won with 48.83% of the vote to Grams's 43.29%. Dayton declined to run for reelection in 2006 and ran successfully in 2010 and 2014 for governor of Minnesota. He was succeeded in the Senate by Amy Klobuchar,who has held the seat ever since. Upon Dayton's swearing in,Democrats held both of Minnesota's U.S. Senate seats for the first time since 1978. As of 2024,this is the last time that a man won the Class 1 Senate seat in Minnesota.
