Eric Thibault (born August 22, 1987) is an American basketball coach who recently served as the head coach of the Washington Mystics of the WNBA. [1] Thibault was previously an assistant coach for the Mystics since the 2013 season.

College

Thibault attended the University of Missouri for his undergraduate English degree and was a member of the all-male practice squad [2] for the Missouri Tiger women's basketball team during his time. After spending three seasons as a practice player, Thibault moved into a graduate assistant role with the Tigers. [3]

Following one year as a graduate assistant at Missouri, the coaching staff there was let go and Thibault found another graduate assistant opportunity with Kim Barnes Arico and the St. John's Red Storm women's basketball team. [4]

Coaching career

Following his years as a graduate assistant, Thibault got his first assistant coaching job with the VCU Rams women's basketball team. [5] Thibault only spent one year there before he left to go the WNBA coaching ranks.

Thibault was named an assistant coach on the Washington Mystics staff in May of 2013. [6] Prior to the 2019 season, the Mystics promoted him to Associate head coach, a position that he held until the end of the 2022 season. [7]

Thibault was promoted to the Mystics head coach position in November of 2022, following the coaching retirement of his father and previous Mystics head coach Mike Thibault. [8]

Personal life

Thibault's father is Mike Thibault, who has coached in both the NBA and the WNBA for numerous years. Mike is currently the Washington Mystics General Manager. His sister is Carly Thibault-DuDonis, who is currently the head coach for the Fairfield Stags women's basketball team. [9]

Eric is married to his wife, Andreya, and they are the parents of son Dean, born in May of 2023. [10]

Jessie Kenlaw worked in collegiate and professional women's basketball between the 1970s to 2000s. After playing a year of collegiate basketball with Savannah State University, Kenlaw started playing professional basketball with the Women's Professional Basketball League in the late 1970s. Kenlaw later briefly joined the Ladies Professional Basketball Association and Women's American Basketball Association during the early 1980s. For her coaching career, Kenlaw started as an assistant coach for Lamar University from 1987 to 1988. After moving to the University of Houston in 1988, Kenlaw continued working as an assistant coach before being named head coach of the Houston Cougars women's basketball team in 1990. As Houston's head coach from 1990 to 1998, Kenlaw had 104 wins and 123 losses.

Jim Lewis is a former collegiate and WNBA basketball coach. After completing assistant coaching positions during the 1970s, Lewis was the head coach of the South Lakes High School boys' basketball team in the early 1980s. In collegiate basketball, Lewis obtained 201 wins and 107 losses as the George Mason Patriots women's basketball head coach from 1984 to 1997. He then went to the WNBA as the first head coach of the Washington Mystics for the 1998 season. Between the 2000s and 2010s, Lewis held assistant coaching positions with the Minnesota Lynx, Indiana Fever and Los Angeles Sparks. During this time period, Lewis was the head coach for the Fordham Rams women's basketball team, T.C. Williams High School girls basketball team, and Georgetown Hoyas women's basketball team.

The 2023 Washington Mystics season was the franchise's 26th season in the Women's National Basketball Association, and their first season under head coach Eric Thibault.

Carly Thibault-DuDonis is the women's basketball coach for Fairfield University since 2022. As a basketball player at Monmouth University, Thibault was named All-Northeast Conference in 2013 and scored 730 points overall. Her 106 career three points were in the top five for the school during 2024. Thibault began her career with Florida State University as their Director of Recruiting Operations during 2013. Throughout the remainder of the 2010s, she held assistant coaching positions with Eastern Michigan University, Mississippi State University and the University of Minnesota.
