Esther-Mirjam Sent (born 9 March 1967) is a Dutch economist,academic researcher,university professor,and politician. She has been the chairwoman of the Labour Party since 2021. Before that,she was a member of the Senate from 7 June 2011 to 7 October 2021. [1]
Sent attended the Rhedens Lyceum in Rozendaal from 1979 to 1985 and studied economics at the University of Amsterdam from 1985 to 1989;she graduated with honors. In 1994 she obtained her PhD in economics from Stanford University in California under the supervision of Nobel Prize winner Kenneth Arrow. Sent is professor of Economic Theory and Economic Policy at Radboud University Nijmegen and lives there. In 2009,2010 and 2011 she won the prize for most media appearances among professors at Radboud University. [2]
In 2011,Sent was elected to the Senate for the PvdA. On July 10,2018,Sent became acting party leader in the Senate after the resignation of AndréPostema. [3] In September 2018,Sent was definitively elected as leader of the PvdA faction in the Senate. In October 2018,Sent announced that he would be a candidate for the PvdA list leader for the Senate elections in 2019. [4] Ultimately,not Sent,but Mei Li Vos was chosen as party leader,and Sent was nominated for second place on the candidate listfor the Senate. This list was ratified at the PvdA congress in January 2019. In June 2019,Sent was succeeded as party chairman by Vos.
At the end of 2019,Sent set herself up as a spokesperson for local residents who protested against the arrival of a new student complex in her neighborhood in Nijmegen. [5] In 2020,Sent was chairman of the committee that compiled the PvdA program for the 2021 House of Representatives elections. This was considered the most left-wing PvdA program in years. [6] On October 1,2021,Sent was elected party chairman,succeeding Nelleke Vedelaar. [7] On October 7,2021,she left the Senate because she found membership incompatible with the party chairmanship. [8]
In the autumn of 2022,Sent was discredited due to culpable actions in the handling of complaints about Member of Parliament and fellow party member Gijs van Dijk. [9] However,she refused to be held accountable. In their own words because 'the majority of some of the reporters would not appreciate that'. [10] [11] De Gelderlander reported in March 2024 that Sent had been investigated in 2021 following anonymous complaints by colleagues at Radboud University of unacceptable behavior and intimidation. She was not allowed to return to her department in October 2022 due to a lack of behavioral change. Sent subsequently moved to the university's Honours Academy. When the reports surfaced,Sent denied that complaints against her had been filed,and she gave an alternative explanation for her change of department. [12]
Kathalijne Maria Buitenweg is a Dutch politician for the GreenLeft who served as a member of the House of Representatives between 2017 and 2021. Between 1999 and 2009,she was a Member of the European Parliament,and sat on the European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties,Justice and Home Affairs. In 2019 she was exposed as one of the members of the secret Bilderberg meeting.

Medy Catharina van der Laan is a Dutch businesswoman,former civil servant and retired politician who served as State Secretary at the Ministry of Education,Culture and Science in charge of culture,media and art under Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende's second cabinet (2003–2006). A member of the Democrats 66 (D66) party,which she joined in 1994,she previously was an assistant to State Secretary Jacob Kohnstamm at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Van der Laan first joined the Ministry of the Interior in 1991 as a civil servant.
Esther Ouwehand is a Dutch politician and former marketing manager serving as leader of the Party for the Animals and its parliamentary group in the House of Representatives since 2019. She has been a member of the House of Representatives since the 2006 election with two interruptions.
Khadija Arib is a Moroccan-Dutch politician of the Labour Party,who served as Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Netherlands from 12 December 2015 to 7 April 2021. In the 2016 Speaker of the Dutch House of Representatives election on 13 January,she was elected to the position,which she had served as Acting Speaker since the resignation of Anouchka van Miltenburg on 12 December 2015. Arib became a member of the House of Representatives following the 1998 Dutch general election and served until 2022,with a brief interruption between 2006 and 2007.
Otwin Evert Theodoor (Otwin) van Dijk is a Dutch politician and former civil servant. A member of the Labour Party,his political career started in the municipality council of Duiven. From 2005 to 2012 he served as alderman in Doetinchem. From 20 September 2012 to 6 July 2016 he was a member of the national parliament. Upon his resignation he was replaced by Harm Brouwer. On 8 July he was installed as mayor of the municipality of Oude IJsselstreek,a neighbouring municipality of Doetinchem.
The 2016 Speaker of the House of Representatives election was called to elect the new Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Netherlands after incumbent Anouchka van Miltenburg of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) had resigned on 12 December 2015. Van Miltenburg,who had been the Speaker since 25 September 2012,resigned after increasing criticism on her performance as Speaker. Khadija Arib of the Labour Party (PvdA),who had been a member of the House of Representatives from 1998 to 2006 and again since 2007,beat Ton Elias of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD),who had been a member of the House since 2008.

Early general elections were held in the Netherlands on 22 November 2023 to elect the members of the House of Representatives. The elections had been expected to be held in 2025 but a snap election was called after the fourth Rutte cabinet collapsed on 7 July 2023 due to immigration policy disagreements between the coalition parties. The incumbent Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced that he would not lead his party into the election and that he would retire from politics.
