Esther Jolobala is a Malawian politician who has served in the Parliament of Malawi since 2014, representing the Machinga East constituency as a member of the United Democratic Front.

Political career

Esther Jolobala was born in the town of Nayuchi in the Machinga District of Malawi. [1]

In the 2014 Malawian general election, Jolobala was elected to represent the Machinga East constituency as an independent in the National Assembly of Malawi. [2] At some point after her election, Jolobala switched parties to the United Democratic Front, which sat in government due to an electoral alliance with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party. [3] Jolobala was re-elected in the 2019 Malawian general election, receiving 23,363 votes; her next closest opponent, Thomas Kenneth Kamu of the DPP, received 6,025 votes. [4]

As of 2022, Jolobala is a member of the Natural Resources and Climate Change Committee and serves as the Shadow Minister of Gender in the opposition. [5] [6] She was previously a member of the Rural and Local Development Committee and the HIV/AIDS and Nutrition Committee, serving as vice chair of the latter. [1] Additionally, Jolobala is a member of the Parliamentary Women's Caucus and the Parliamentary Conservation Caucus. [5] [7] In March 2022, she served as one of Malawi's representatives to the 144th assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. [8]

During her tenure in parliament, Jolobala has served an advocate for the improvement of Malawi's infrastructure and roads. In December 2018, Jolobala alleged that the DPP government was prioritizing road projects in DPP constituencies in spite of failing infrastructure in the rest of the country. [9] [10] In 2021, she stated that the Nayuchi-Nsanama road had become so heavily damaged that residents were forced to rely on a twice-a-week train in order to conduct business or to receive healthcare, as even ambulances were unable to traverse the road. [11] Jolobala supported a 2022 emergency power restoration bill which allowed the government to borrow funds from the International Development Association in order to repair the Kapichira Hydroelectric Power Station, which had been damaged by Tropical Storm Ana. Later that year, she sided with the Malawi Congress Party government regarding immigration, stating that an influx of unskilled foreign nationals were taking jobs from Malawian workers. [12] During her tenure, Jolobala has also supported increasing the number of polling places in rural constituencies, and advocated for the removal of a surtax on internet services, stating that the tax makes internet unaffordable for a majority of Malawians. [13] [14]

Jolobala is also a prominent opponent of the persecution of albinos. She has decried attacks and kidnappings of albinos, and criticized the Malawi Police Service for delayed or limited responses to crimes against albinos. [15] [16] In 2016, she introduced a bill which would increase the penalties of crimes against albinos, though the bill was not ultimately drafted by the Ministry of Justice. [17]

On 9 December 2019, during an argument with a Machinga District Commissioner regarding the distribution of water pumps, Jolobala grabbed the commissioner by the necktie and forced him against a wall. Jolobala was arrested and charged with breaching the peace the following day. [18] [19]

John Zenus Ungapake Tembo is a Malawian politician who served for years as President of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). Tembo comes from the Dedza District in central Malawi, and he is a teacher by profession. Beginning in the 1960s he was an important politician in Malawi, and he was a key figure in the regime of Hastings Banda (1964–1994). He has been variously described as "physically slight, ascetic, fastidious" and "cunning". He was replaced as President of the MCP in August 2013.

Cassim Chilumpha is a Malawian politician who was Vice-President of Malawi from June 2004 to May 2009. Later, under President Joyce Banda, he was appointed as Minister of Energy and Mining in April 2012.

General elections were held in Malawi on 19 May 2009. Incumbent President Bingu wa Mutharika ran for re-election; his main opponent was John Tembo, the president of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). Five other candidates also ran. The election was won by Mutharika, who was re-elected to the Presidency with around two-thirds of the vote. Mutharika's DPP also won a strong parliamentary majority.

Limbani Kalilani is a Malawian hip hop artist better known by his stage name Tay Grin. In 2009 Tay Grin founded an Entertainment & Event Promotion company, which helps to promote events across Malawi. The company is known as Black Rhyno Entertainment. In 2014, Grin won a Black Entertainment Film Fashion Television and Arts (BEFFTA) award for Best International African Act. In 2016, he won the BEFFTA Star Award in the music category. He has performed at the annual Lake of Stars Music Festival. He also won the 2016 WatsUp TV Africa Music Video Awards Best Traditional Video award, with the Video Chipapapa featuring 2baba. He has also won numerous local awards like the Nyasa Music awards and the Urban Music People in categories such as best live act, best video and best Male artist. In 2018, he won the UMP Fashion awards for Most Fashionable Celebrity.

Arthur Peter Mutharika is a Malawian politician and lawyer who was President of Malawi from May 2014 to June 2020. Mutharika has worked in the field of international justice, specialising in international economic law, international law and comparative constitutional law. He informally served as an adviser to his older brother, President Bingu wa Mutharika, on issues of foreign and domestic policy from the onset of his election campaign until the President's death on 5 April 2012.

General elections were held in Malawi on 21 May 2019 to elect the President, National Assembly and local government councillors. Incumbent President Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party was re-elected, with his party remaining the largest in the National Assembly. However, on 3 February 2020, the Constitutional Court annulled the presidential election results due to evidence of irregularities, and ordered fresh elections be held. They were widely dubbed the "Tipp-Ex elections" after a brand of correction fluid which opponents claimed had been used to tamper with votes.

Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda is a Malawian politician. In 2020 she became Minister of Health in Malawi.

Nayuchi is a town located in Machinga District in Malawi. Serving as a border post for road and rail control between Malawi and Mozambique.

Clement Terence Chiwaya was a Malawian politician who served as an MP for Mangochi Central from 2004 to 2019. He was also Minister of Social Development and Persons with Disabilities from 2004 through 2005.

Agnes Nyalonje is a Malawian politician who has served as the country's Education Minister since July 2020.
