Esther Faye Bills (February 2, 1945 – December 8, 2006) was an American soul singer and choreographer, best known as the "longest-lasting Ikette" in the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. [2] In the 1980s, she was the lead vocalist in the band Formula 5.

Life and career

Jones was born on February 2, 1945, in El Paso, Texas, to Luchie and Carrie Bills. [3] Growing up in Midland, she sang in church, played percussion and won competitions as a twirler. After she graduated from Carver High School in 1964, she joined a group called the B-29ers and Arty Tolliver as a vocalist. [4]

In 1968, [5] Jones auditioned to become an Ikette and was hired on the spot. While most Ikettes did not last long, Jones was one of the constant members until the end of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue in 1976. [6] At one point, she had briefly quit when Ike Turner fined her $15 for being late onstage. [2] Due to her experience and leadership, Jones trained the other Ikettes and was referred to as "Motha" Ikette. [2] During her tenure as an Ikette she was responsible for most of the choreography. [2] Tina Turner described her as "the hardest worker and toughest dancer". [2] As an Ikette with Ike & Tina Turner, Jones opened for the Rolling Stones on their 1969 American tour. They were featured in the Isley Brothers concert film It's Your Thing (1970) and had a cameo in the Miloš Forman film Taking Off (1971). The revue toured the world and performed at the Independence Day concert in Accra, Ghana, which was released as the film Soul to Soul (1971). [7] They also appeared on various television shows such as The Hollywood Palace , The Ed Sullivan Show , The Andy Williams Show , and Soul Train.

While she was an Ikette, Jones lived in Los Angeles with her husband, while their three children lived in Texas with her grandparents. [2]

In 1983, Jones released the single "Love Hour" with drummer-singer Tony Davis as Tony & Davis. Jones fronted the soul funk band Formula 5 in the 1980s. She released two albums, Determination (1985) and On The Rise (1986), with the band on Malaco Records. In 1985, Jones performed at the San Francisco Blues Festival.

Jones moved back to Midland, Texas, shortly after she had a stroke in 1992. She also suffered from multiple myeloma. At the age of 60, she became a member of the West Texas Aphasia Center, which helps stroke victims learn to communicate. [4] On December 8, 2006, Jones died at the age of 61 at the Hospice of Midland. [4] She was survived by her sons Blake Burton and Robert Bills. [3]

Claudia Lennear is an American soul singer and educator. Lennear began her performing with the Superbs before becoming an Ikette in the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. She was also a background vocalist for various acts, including Joe Cocker, Leon Russell, and Freddie King. She released her only solo album in 1973. Lennear was featured in the 2013 Oscar-winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom. She was inducted in the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame in 2019.

In the 1970s, Armstead appeared in the Broadway musicals Don't Play Us Cheap and Seesaw.

Robbie Montgomery is an American singer and restaurateur. She is noted for being one of the original Ikettes in the Ike & Tina Turner Revue in the 1960s. After her tenure as an Ikette, she was a member of the Mirettes, and then became a "Night Tripper" for Dr. John. In the 1970s, Montgomery was a backing vocalist for acts such as Stevie Wonder, Barbra Streisand, the Rolling Stones, and Joe Cocker. She later created the Sweetie Pie's franchise, and starred in the award-winning reality series Welcome to Sweetie Pie's.

Carlena Williams was an American vocalist. Early in her career, she recorded under her name, Flora Williams, as an Ikette in the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. In the 1960s she released a few singles as Carlena Weaver. She later toured with rock group Pink Floyd as a backing vocalist. Williams sang with various artists, including The Carpenters, Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison, Etta James, David Gilmour, and Humble Pie. Williams was a member of Sunshine, Donna Summer's backing vocal group in the 1970s.

Ruby Alline Bullock Selico was an American songwriter. She was the older full sister of singer Tina Turner. Bullock once served as the manager of the girl group the Ikettes. She wrote songs for Ike & Tina Turner as well as their band the Kings of Rhythm, including "Funkier Than a Mosquita's Tweeter" which was covered by Nina Simone.

Marcy Thomas, also known as Lyrica Garrett, is an American singer and actress. She started off her career as an Ikette in the Ike & Tina Turner Revue in the 1970s. She also sang with The Undisputed Truth, Rick James, and Johnny "Guitar" Watson. As an actress, she toured with The Wiz production and was later featured on the VH1 reality show Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood with her daughter Lyrica Anderson.

Edna Woods, also known as LeJeune Richardson, is an American singer, dancer and actress. She was an Ikette in the Ike & Tina Turner Revue in the 1960s and 1970s, and later a dancer for Tina Turner in the 1980s and 1990s. Richardson was a backing vocalist for Gayle McCormick and John Mayall. She was also a member of the vocal group Silver, Platinum & Gold.

Vera Hamilton was an American soul singer. Best known as an Ikette in The Ike & Tina Turner Revue, she also performed as an Otisette with Johnny Otis and recorded as a solo artist.
