Loretta Ann Pargas Rosales [2] (born August 17,1939) is a Filipina activist,teacher and politician who has served three terms as the party-list representative of the Akbayan Citizens' Action Party to the Philippines' House of Representatives from the 11th- 13th Congress (1998-2007). She was the Chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights of the Republic of the Philippines from 2010 to 2015. [1]
She is a well-known defender of human rights and was instrumental in instituting a class action suit in the Hawaii District Court which resulted in the only judgment holding the former dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos liable for gross human rights violations committed during his incumbency,which judgment was partially executed in 2011. [3] She herself is a victim of human rights violations by the Marcos regime. [4]
As an activist,she founded the leftist and now party-list Alliance of Concerned Teacher (ACT). [5] She was also the chairperson of Partido ng Bayan. [6] She joined Akbayan in 1998,formed the Akbayan Citizens' Action Party,better known as Akbayan. She was elected as a congresswoman for that party list from 1998 to 2007. [5]
After serving in Congress for three terms,she served as Co-Chairperson of the Philippine Coalition for the International Criminal Court and founded Building Bridges for Peace,a multi-sectoral initiative to secure land rights and security for agrarian reform and indigenous communities through dialogue.[ citation needed ]
In 2010,she was the possible choice of President Benigno S. Aquino III to head the country's Commission on Human Rights as a replacement to Leila de Lima,who became the Justice Secretary of the country. [7] Many left-wing organizations,such as Karapatan and the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) (a group she was formerly aligned with),protested her appointment,stating that she was unfit for the position. [8]
Rosales is a known critic of the regime of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and has often led her party list in protests in opposition to it. Risa Hontiveros,a colleague in Akbayan,welcomed her appointment. [9] She was appointed Commission on Human Rights Chairperson on September 1,2010. [10] As CHR Chairperson,she also served as Chairperson of the Southeast Asia National Human Rights Institutions Forum,the regional network of national human rights institutions in ASEAN.[ citation needed ]
In November 2017,the Progressive Alliance cited Rosales for her contribution to human rights in the Philippines and for political courage. She was the first recipient of the award. [11]
In 2018,Rosales was recognized by the Human Rights Violations Victims' Memorial Commission as a human rights violations victim of the Martial Law Era. [12]

Akbayan is noted as a leading member of the progressive movement in the Philippines,having been formed in 1998 by a variety of progressive political organizations.

Aquilino Martin de la Llana Pimentel III,commonly known as Koko Pimentel,is a Filipino politician and lawyer serving as the Senate Minority Leader since 2022. He has been a Senator since 2011 and previously served as the Senate President of the Philippines from 2016 to 2018. He is also the national chairman of Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP–Laban). As the eldest son and third child of the former Senate President Aquilino Pimentel Jr.,he is the first child of a previous Senate president to hold the office. Protests against Former President Rodrigo Duterte escalated on November 18,2016,following Duterte's support of the burial of the late president Ferdinand Marcos. These series of protests are mostly conducted by progressive groups and other opposing figures mainly due to the ongoing war on drugs,the declaration of martial law in Mindanao,and employment issues such as contractual terms being applied by companies and inflation which occurred due to the passage of the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Law. The Sagay massacre occurred when a group of gunmen shot and killed nine sugarcane farmers,including four women and two children,while they were eating dinner in a makeshift tent on a farm in Sagay,Negros Occidental,on October 20,2018. The farmers were members of the National Federation of Sugar Workers (NFSW),and the massacre may have been motivated by ongoing conflicts over land reform in the Philippines.
The Ateneo bullying incident occurred on December 19,2018,when a student,Joaquin Montes,physically bullied a schoolmate inside the bathroom of the Junior High School campus in the Ateneo de Manila University. The incident was captured on video and was met with widespread shock and outrage on social media,with local celebrities,politicians,and netizens denouncing the incident. On December 23,the Ateneo management announced that the bully had been dismissed from the school.

It is a type of harassment and has pernicious effects on its targets. Red-tagging has been practiced by security forces,government officials or shills.
