Eucorydia donanensis is a species of iridescent cockroach in the family Corydiidae. [2] [3] It was discovered on Yonaguni Island of Japan's Ryukyu Archipelago, and was believed to be restricted to that island until its discovery on nearby Ishigakijima Island in June 2022. [4] [5] [6] [1]
Eucorydia donanensis males grow to 12.5 to 14.5 mm in length, while females grow between 13–15.2 mm. [2] [5] [6] They have brown heads, with black antennae divided into 38–40 segments. Their pronotums are metallic blue or green, their tegmens are the same colour but with an indistinct orange or poppy coloured band, the dimness of the band varying by individual specimen. [2] [1] Their abdomens are dark purple. [2] [1]
Eucorydia donanensis resembles E. yatsumatsui, E. dasytoides, E. tokaraensis, E. yunnanensis, and E. guilinensis. It can be differentiated from those species by its length and coloration. [5]
On June 29, 2021, the Japanese Ministry of the Environment placed the Usuobiruri cockroach, along with two other recently discovered species ( Scolopendra alcyona and Eucorydia miyakoensis ), under "Critically Endangered Species Protection". [6] [1] This protection punishes the killing, unauthorized display, or exportation of the species with up to five years in jail or a fine of up to 5 million ¥ ($USD 45558). [1] The protection was made in response to interest from international hobbyists and collectors. [6]
Mesotardigrada is one of three classes of tardigrades, consisting of a single species, Thermozodium esakii. The animal reportedly has six claws of equal length at each foot. This species was described in 1937 by German zoologist Gilbert Rahm from a hot spring near Nagasaki, Japan. The inability of taxonomists to replicate Rahm's finding has cast doubt on the accuracy of the description, making T. esakii, and by extension the entire class Mesotardigrada, a taxon inquirendum.

The Bonin greenfinch, also known as the Ogasawara greenfinch, is a small passerine bird in the finch family Fringillidae that is endemic to the Ogasawara Islands of Japan, where it is found on the Bonin Islands and Volcano Islands. It was formerly considered a subspecies of the grey-capped greenfinch and some authorities consider it as such, but a 2020 analysis found it likely to represent a distinct species that diverged from C. sinica about 1.06 million years ago, and the International Ornithological Congress now recognizes it as such, making it the eleventh endemic species in Japan. There are fewer than 400 individuals in the population and it is considered critically endangered by the Japanese government, necessitating protection. According to the Yamashina Institute for Ornithology, as of December 2021, the Ogaswara greenfinch is Japan's most endangered bird.

It is the third amphibious member of the genus Scolopendra discovered so far, and the largest species of centipede in Japan, as well as the first new centipede species discovered in Japan for 143 years.
Eucorydia miyakoensis is a species of cockroach first discovered on Miyako Island, in Japan's Ryukyu Archipelago, in 2021. It is found exclusively in the forests of Miyako Island, where it lives in the forest floor's leaf litter and humus.
