The Italian-American National Union was a Sicilian-American organization, which controlled much of the Italian vote within the United States during the early twentieth century. In organic chemistry, the Schmidt reaction is an organic reaction in which an azide reacts with a carbonyl derivative, usually an aldehyde, ketone, or carboxylic acid, under acidic conditions to give an amine or amide, with expulsion of nitrogen. It is named after Karl Friedrich Schmidt (1887–1971), who first reported it in 1924 by successfully converting benzophenone and hydrazoic acid to benzanilide. The intramolecular reaction was not reported until 1991 but has become important in the synthesis of natural products. The reaction is effective with carboxylic acids to give amines (above), and with ketones to give amides (below).
Pseudagrion is the largest genus of damselfly in the family Coenagrionidae, with over 140 species. Its range includes most of Africa, much of Asia, and Australia. Africa holds most of the diversity with almost 100 species. In their third year under head coach Francis Schmidt, the Orange and Black compiled a 6–3 record and outscored their opponents by a total of 257 to 95. The team won its first two games by scores of 92–0 over East Central and 75–13 over the Chilocco Indian Agricultural School. Schmidt was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
