Eva Rose York Bible Training and Technical School for Women was founded in 1922 [1] by the Canadian Baptist Mission (CBM). The school is in Tuni in Andhra Pradesh, India.

Background

Missionaries of the Canadian Baptist Mission were involved in spreading awareness about the Bible in northern circars of Andhra Pradesh. [2] The missionaries began arriving in India as early as 1868. [2]

Early missionaries involved women to initiate the Gospel. [3]

Winfred Eaton, a missionary of the Canadian Baptist Mission began classes in Palakonda in 1922 with a few girls. [4] In 1925, the school was relocated to Tuni. [4]

Name

Eva Rose (née Fitch) York (1858–1938) [5] was an early Canadian composer and teacher who lent support [6] for the buildings on the campus in Tuni.

Eva Rose Fitch was born in Norwich, Ontario, where she attended college and married Dr. Winford York in 1879. [7] She studied music and, after her husband died in 1880, took up the study of the organ and became a born-again Christian. She founded choirs in Belleville and Toronto before she decided in 1899 to devote her time to establishing a home, Redemption House, for unwed mothers in Toronto. York founded a home for the women that she ran until 1914 before she left to spend 15 years as an itinerant preacher. [7] Her efforts have caused her name to be immortalised here, [5] [ where? ] and her talents as a poet have also kept her memory. [8]

The school is partly supported by funds raised in Canada by Baptist women. [9]

In 1987 technical courses were begun when Jessie Rosser was principal. [10]

Administration

Since the missionary days, the school was run independently. However, since 1989, [10] the school fell under the purview of the Seminary Council of the Baptist Theological Seminary, Kakinada. Rev. K.J. Emmanuel heads the Seminary Council. Rev. D.J. Jeremiah is the present principal of the school.

The Canadian Baptist Ministries past overseers in India, Rev. G. Babu Rao and M. David K. Sarma, were also responsible for the functioning of the school.

Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church (AELC) was constituted in the year 1927 in Andhra Pradesh, India. It is the Indian successor to the United Lutheran Church in America which was started as a self-supporting, self-governing, and self-propagating church among Telugu Christians.

M. Victor Paul was a biblical scholar who served as President of the Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church from 1993 to 1997.

Acharya A. B. Masilamani or Abel Boanerges Masilamani (1914–1990) was a Golden Jubilee Baptist pastor and evangelist on whom parallels had been drawn comparing his ecclesiastical ministry with that of Saint Paul. The Mar Thoma Syrian Church, one of the Saint Thomas Christian Churches founded by Thomas the Apostle in the first century which holds the annual Maramon Conventions used to have Masilamani preach at its conventions since the 1970s. During one such Maramon Convention held in 1983 at Maramon, Masilamani was one of the main speaker who spoke on Christology in the presence of the two patriarchs of the Mar Thoma Church, Alexander Mar Thoma and Thomas Mar Athanius.

E. Prakasam, a Lutheran, was the first Indian President of the Protestant Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church Society whose ministry was primarily based in the Guntur District and also in East Godavari District, West Godavari District, Krishna District, and Visakhapatnam District. Being one of the established Indian Pastors, Prakasam was elected as president and served from 1944 to 1950 after which he resumed his Pastoral duties as a Lutheran Pastor.

G. Devasahayam was the Indian President of the Protestant Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church Society and served during the periods 1956–1960 and again from 1963–1964. During his second stint as President of the AELC, Devasahayam participated in the opening of the newly formed Andhra Christian Theological College then located in the same campus of the Lutheran Theological College in Rajahmundry.

K. Frederick Paradesi Babu is the current President of the Protestant Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church Society. He had his ministerial formation at the Andhra Christian Theological College, Hyderabad, a Seminary affiliated to the nation's first university, the Senate of Serampore College (University).

Ravela Joseph is a Priest of the Protestant Samavesam of Telugu Baptist Churches (STBC) with over 50 years of ecclesiastical ministry, much of which was into Spiritual formation, having taught at the Andhra Christian Theological College, Secunderabad, Telangana (India).

Chetti Bhanumurti was a Hymn Writer whose hymns are found in the Hymnal in Telugu. Bhanumurti was a Pastor of the Canadian Baptist Mission/Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars who also led the Principalship of the Baptist Theological Seminary, Kakinada from 1945-1956 leading to its affiliation to the nation's first University, Senate of Serampore College (University) in 1946

Jessie Rosser(born 1921;died 2013) was a Missionary of the Canadian Baptist Ministries who served in India for over 40 years and was Principal of the Eva Rose York Bible Training and Technical School for Women in Tuni, Andhra Pradesh.

Mildred Hazel Law was a missionary of the Canadian Baptist Ministries. Mildred came to India in 1953 and served in the northern coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, especially at the Eva Rose York Bible Training and Technical School for Women in Tuni.

Ruth Fletcher was the third Principal of the Eva Rose York Bible Training and Technical School for Women in Tuni. Ruth was the great granddaughter of A. V. Timpany, one of the pioneer missionaries of the Canadian Baptist Ministries. Ruth's mother, Dorothy Timpany was a Medical Doctor at the CBM Bethel Hospital, Vuyyuru.

S. E. Krupa Rao was a Pastor of the Protestant Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars where he held leadership positions in the Church society whose area of operation extended from Srikakulam District in the northern circars along the Bay of Bengal right through seven districts up to Guntur District.

M. S. G. Lalitha Kumari a.k.a. Lalitha Krupa Rao was the eighth Principal of Eva Rose York Bible Training and Technical School for Women, Tuni. She held the term from 1993 through 2011. Lalitha was a theologically trained woman who also used to pastor a Church. With her ordination in 1992, she became the first Woman priest in the Protestant Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars.
