S. E. Krupa Rao (born 8 August 1939; [2] died 15 June 1993) [1] was a Baptist Pastor of the Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars where he held leadership positions in the Church society whose area of operation extended from Srikakulam District in the northern circars along the Bay of Bengal right through seven districts up to Guntur District.

As an Administrator Krupa Rao contributed to the ministerial, technical and medical ministries of the Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars, as Principal [4] of the Baptist Theological Seminary, Kakinada and the Eva Rose York Bible Training and Technical School for Women, Tuni as well as to the Council of Christian Hospitals, Pithapuram. Krupa Rao headed the Major Seminary in Kakinada from 1977 through 1993, the longest ever in the history of the seminary till that point of time. [1] In 1989, [5] he also became Principal of the Eva Rose York Bible Training and Technical School for Women, Tuni succeeding Mildred H. Law. [1]

Studies

Krupa Rao underwent scholastic studies between 1945-1955 at the CBM-High School and the Zilla Parishad High School in Samalkota and moved to Kakinada for collegiate studies between 1955-1957 to the Pithapuram Raja College. [1]

Rao was an active Sunday School Teacher in one of the Churches of the Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars. As a resident [2] of Kakinada, Krupa Rao came under the influence of then Principal of the Baptist Theological Seminary, A. B. Masilamani who was acting as a Vocation Promoter leading youth towards Priesthood. Masilamani became Krupa Rao's Spiritual Confessor and was able to guide Krupa Rao towards Priesthood making him take up a propadeutic course during 1959 [6] -1961 [7] at the Serampore College, Serampore {a constituent College of the Senate of Serampore College (University) } during the Principalship of William Stewart where Rao discerned his avocation towards priesthood and returned to Kakinada and joined [2] the Baptist Theological Seminary, Kakinada during the Principalship of Waldo Penner to pursue licentiate studies in theology leading to L.Th. By this time, in 1964, the Seminary in Kakinada, together with the Andhra Union Theological College, Dornakal and the Lutheran Theological College in Rajahmundry jointly formed the near-ecumenical Andhra Christian Theological College and Krupa Rao's studies were transferred from the seminary to this College under the Principalship of W. D. Coleman and by 1965 [8] and was awarded an L.Th. in the ensuing convocation of the University during the Registrarship of C. Devasahayam.

Graduate and postgraduate

In 1968, [1] Krupa Rao joined the Ramayapatnam Baptist Theological Seminary{affiliated to the Senate of Serampore College (University)} whose B.D. section was housed within the premises of the Andhra Christian Theological College, Rajahmundry to upgrade his academics to Bachelor of Divinity studying under G. Solomon, Louis F. Knoll, K. Wilson, W. D. Coleman, G. Devasahayam, W. P. Peery, Eric J. Lott, B. E. Devaraj, Ryder Devapriam, Suppogu Joseph, M. Victor Paul and other distinguished faculty. After nearly a decade, Krupa Rao was sent to the Union Theological Seminary, New York City (affiliated [9] to the University of Columbia) where he studied for a master's course in theology during 1979-1980 leading to S.T.M. [1]

Ecclesiastical ministry

Pastoral

After completing a licentiate course in theology in 1965, Krupa Rao began pastoring Nellimarla parish from 1965 to 1968. [1] Again from 1973 through 1976, he pastored the Andhra Baptist Church - Jagannaickpur [2] parish in Kakinada.

Spiritual Formator

In 1976, [1] Krupa Rao became a Spiritual Formator at the Protestant Baptist Theological Seminary, Kakinada where aspirants enroll to discern their avocation towards priesthood. Rao, together with his other companions, The Rev. G. Novahu Raju and The Rev. C. L. Johnson used to spiritually guide and mentor the aspirants. Later, Rao also led the seminary as Principal [4] succeeding Gordon Dewolfe Barss. During Rao's tenure, he also took up the role of a Vocation Promoter guiding youth towards Priesthood enabling them not only to take up propadeutic courses and being their Spiritual Confessor but also enabling the aspirants to turn their ministerial calling into a perpetual profession and continue their spiritual studies at the Protestant Regional Theologiate in Hyderabad in which the Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars is a participating member.

Medical

As a member [1] [3] of the Council of Christian Hospitals, Krupa Rao took part in the management of the medical institutions founded by Canadian Baptist Ministries, namely,

Krupa Rao used to represent the Council of Christian Hospitals in the Association and Council of the Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore. [1] [3] Krupa Rao was also a member [3] of the Christian Medical Association of India.

Ministerial

Andhra Christian Theological College

Krupa Rao, as a member of the Seminary Council of the Baptist Theological Seminary, Kakinada, represented the Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars Society on the Board of Governors of the near-ecumenical Andhra Christian Theological College, a Protestant Regional Theologiate situated in Secunderabad which had a four-member representation on the faculty from the CBCNC during that period, namely, K. David, [10] G. Babu Rao, [11] K. D. G. Prakasa Rao and D. J. Jeremiah. [12] In the course of time, Krupa Rao became the Chairperson [1] of the Board during 1990-1992 where he held a name for himself and was able to steer clear of controversies much like his Spiritual Confessor, A. B. Masilamani.

In 1990 during the rotation of Principalship from Samavesam of Telugu Baptist Churches Society to the Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church Society, Krupa Rao played a notable role. It was the Samavesam of Telugu Baptist Churches Society which held the Principalship from 1986 through 1990 on a 4-year rotation basis and was then supposed to pass it on to the Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church Society but lack of quorum at the Board of Governors meeting of the Andhra Christian Theological College, Hyderabad made the decision to prolong. As the day progressed, Krupa Rao, as Chairperson of the Board of Governors together with Governor Ryder Devapriam ensured that efforts were made to maintain a proper quorum resulting in holding of the Board of Governors meeting which then resolved to pass on the 4-year cycle of Principalship to the Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church Society. Suppogu Joseph was the outgoing Principal while M. Victor Paul was the Principal-designate during 1990. Incidentally, both Suppogu Joseph and M. Victor Paul happened to tutor Krupa Rao during his upgrading studies at Andhra Christian Theological College at its erstwhile campus at Rajahmundry.

Bible Society of India

As a Branch Secretary of the Bible Society of India Andhra Pradesh Auxiliary, Krupa Rao was instrumental in taking forward the Bible cause. In 1977, Krupa Rao became a member of the Bible Society of India Andhra Pradesh Auxiliary Committee and later became a member of the Executive Committee [1] of the Bible Society of India Central Office in Bangalore. During Krupa Rao's stint at the Bible Society, he worked closely with his companion Lella Prakasam, then Auxiliary Secretary stationed at the Bible House, Secunderabad who also happened to hail from the Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars.

Bishop T. B. D. Prakasa Rao was the fourth CSI-Bishop - in - Krishna-Godavari of the Protestant Church of South India who occupied the Cathedra placed at CSI-St. Paul's Cathedral, Vijayawada. The Bishopric of Prakasa Rao lasted for two decades from 1981 through 2001, one of the longest in the history of the Church of South India Society. Prakasa Rao led the bishopric of Krishna-Godavari that comprised the Christian missions established by the London Missionary Society (LMS) and the Church Missionary Society (CMS) which merged its South India Christian missions in India into the Church of South India Society which was inaugurated in 1947 at the CSI-St. George's Cathedral, Madras.

Ryder Devapriam was systematic theologian who taught during the 1960s and the 1970s at the Andhra Christian Theological College, a Protestant Regional Theologiate in Secunderabad, affiliated to the nation's first University, the Senate of Serampore College (University) {a University under Section 2 (f) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956}with degree-granting authority validated by a Danish Charter and ratified by the Government of West Bengal.

Acharya A. B. Masilamani or Abel Boanerges Masilamani (1914–1990) was a Golden Jubilee Baptist pastor and evangelist on whom parallels had been drawn comparing his ecclesiastical ministry with that of Saint Paul. The Mar Thoma Syrian Church, one of the Saint Thomas Christian Churches founded by Thomas the Apostle in the first century which holds the annual Maramon Conventions used to have Masilamani preach at its conventions since the 1970s. During one such Maramon Convention held in 1983 at Maramon, Masilamani was one of the main speaker who spoke on Christology in the presence of the two patriarchs of the Mar Thoma Church, Alexander Mar Thoma and Thomas Mar Athanius.

L. Prakasam was a Pastor of the Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars who served as the Auxiliary Secretary of the Bible Society of India Andhra Pradesh Auxiliary during the period 1982-1998, the longest in the history of the Auxiliary.

Suppogu Joseph is a Golden jubilee Pastor of the Protestant Samavesam of Telugu Baptist Churches with major contribution to New Testament scholarship with reference to Lukan literature. In a study on Luke in 2010 by Justin Alexandru undertaken at the University of Durham, Joseph's work has been cited by the researcher in the context of Authorship of Luke–Acts where Justin authoritatively attests the work of Joseph.

Rayi Ratna Sundara Rao was a prolific writer, theologian and comparative religion scholar who once was the principal of the Gurukul Lutheran Theological College, Chennai, affiliated to India's first university, the Senate of Serampore College (University).

Chetti Devasahayam was the Registrar of the nation's first University, the Senate of Serampore College (University) who was in office from 1960 through 1975. It was during Devasahayam's tenure at the University that ecumenism gave way to merger of seminaries and the formation of special purpose entities throughout India. It was Devasahayam who gave the inaugural address when the Andhra Christian Theological College was formed in 1964 in Rajahmundry.

Chetti Bhanumurti was a Hymn Writer whose hymns are found in the Hymnal in Telugu. Bhanumurti was a Pastor of the Canadian Baptist Mission/Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars who also led the Principalship of the Baptist Theological Seminary, Kakinada from 1945-1956 leading to its affiliation to the nation's first University, Senate of Serampore College (University) in 1946

Quirk Memorial Baptist Church (QMB Church), founded in 1948, is a Baptist Church affiliated to the Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars. The Church is located on Rama Talkies Road in Resapuvanipalem, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh (India).

Waldo Penner was a Baptist missionary who served in India from 1946 through 1981 as a team member of the Canadian Baptist Ministries. Penner was born in Secunderabad in India where his parents were missionaries of the American Baptist Mission.

Gordon Dewolfe Barss was a Baptist missionary who served in India during 1939-1980 through the Canadian Baptist Ministries.

T. Gnananandam was a Pastor of the Protestant Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars and was Principal of the Baptist Theological Seminary, Kakinada during 1968-1969, the shortest ever in the history of the seminary.

M. Theophilus was a Baptist Patriarch and Spiritual Formator of the Protestant Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars, a major congregation along the Bay of Bengal in Andhra Pradesh, India that extends from Srikakulam District in the northern tip through Guntur District in the middle. Theophilus taught at the Baptist Theological Seminary, Kakinada during the period 1926–1946 and was also Senator of India's first University, the Senate of Serampore College (University) during 1942–1946 taking forward not only the theological concerns of the university but also the concerns of Serampore College, which as a dual University affiliated entity, had the arts, science and commerce faculties affiliated to the University of Calcutta. In matters of Church union, Theophilus actively cooperated with the National Council of Churches in India that not only incorporated the Protestant and the Oriental Orthodox Churches but also reached out to the Catholics.

G. Solomon was an Old Testament Scholar and a Baptist Patriarch hailing from the Protestant Samavesam of Telugu Baptist Churches Society (an affiliate member of the Baptist World Alliance and the National Council of Churches in India) and led it as its President during the years 1978-1982 overseeing the spiritual affairs of the Church Society whose ecclesiastical jurisdiction comprises the three states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana with 873 Churches comprising nearly a million members per present statistics.

Tantepudi George Cornelious is the current Bishop - in - Krishna Godavari Diocese of the Church of South India with the Bishop's Cathedra housed in CSI-St. Andrew's Cathedral in Machilipatnam. However, for administrative purposes, the Office of the Bishopric is located in Vijayawada with its ecclesiastical jurisdiction encompassing the civil districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, and Guntur in Andhra Pradesh.

M. S. G. Lalitha Kumari a.k.a. Lalitha Krupa Rao was the eighth Principal of Eva Rose York Bible Training and Technical School for Women, Tuni. She held the term from 1993 through 2011. Lalitha was a theologically trained woman who also used to pastor a Church. With her ordination in 1992, she became the first Woman priest in the Protestant Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars.

Perapogu Joseph was a military chaplain in the Indian Army Corps of EME and a counselor who taught students in Serampore College, Serampore and Andhra Christian Theological College, Secunderabad.
