H. S. Wilson(born 1946 [1] ) is Executive Director of Foundation for Theological Education in the Southeast Asia [3] based in Philadelphia. [4] Wilson is widely known in India for his contribution to theological education in India as Director (1980 through 1988) of Research and Church Relations at the Board of Theological Education of the Senate of Serampore College, Bangalore, [5] the theological arm of the Senate of Serampore College (University), the nation's first University [6]

Studies

Wilson studied at St. Aloysius College (Mangalore) obtaining a degree in Commerce (B. Com.) from the University of Mysore. He had his ministerial formation at the United Theological College, Bangalore as a candidate of the United Basel Mission between 1967-1970 [7] where he obtained a Bachelor of Divinity (B. D.) entitling his graduate thesis as An Impact of Protestant Christianity of the Religious, Social, and Cultural Aspect of Tuluva Community in South Kanara. [2] Later, the University under the Registrarship of Chetti Devasahayam awarded him with a degree.[ citation needed ]

From 1970-1972 he pursued a Master of Arts (M. A.) degree from Karnataka University and then went over to Princeton, New Jersey to study for a postgraduate degree in Theology taking a Master of Theology (Th.M.) degree from the Princeton Theological Seminary and continued his studies up to research level by enrolling at the Drew University obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in 1977 where he submitted a thesis entitled The Speaking God: Luther's Theology of Preaching [8] done under the guidance of Professors Bard Thompson, James Pain and Charles L. Rice. [9]

Ecclesiastical career

Pastoral ministry

As a ministerial candidate of the United Basel Mission, Wilson pastored at the United Basel Mission Church in Mumbai from 1973-1974. During his overseas study, he was Youth Pastor at the Arcola Methodist Church, New Jersey. From 1978-1979, he was Honorary Associate Presbyter at CSI-St. Andrew's Church, Bangalore.

Although Wilson belonged to the Basel Mission which had unionized itself into the Church of South India in 1968, he continued to be in the fold of the United Basel Mission. The ecclesiastical unification of the erstwhile Basel Mission did not go well with the congregations resulting in undecided allegiance, an act which resulted in chaos due to poor management. [18] Wilson took some time to decide his allegiance and eventually came into the fold of the Church of South India resulting in his ordination on 19 November 1978 [2] at CSI-St. Paul’s Church, Mangalore by S. R. Furtado then Bishop - in - Karnataka Southern Diocese.

Teaching ministry

India

After Wilson completed his doctoral studies, he returned to India and took up a teaching assignment at the United Theological College, Bangalore and taught from 1977 to 1988 [2] serving under two Principals, J. R. Chandran and E. C. John. For a year (1989), he served as Ecumenical Relations Director he moved to the Church of South India Synod on the invitation of the Moderator, Victor Premasagar.

Overseas

From 1989 to 1998, Wilson was at Geneva serving as Executive Secretary, [2] Department of Theology, World Alliance of Reformed Churches, Geneva. Again from 1998 to 2003, Wilson was Wilhelm Loehe Associate Professor [2] of World Mission at the Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque. From 2003 to 2006, Wilson was H. George Anderson Professor of Mission and Cultures at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. [5]

Contribution to theological education

India

During Wilson's stint at the BTESSC from 1980-1988, he ensured that budding theologians were recognised and sent for higher theological education, both locally and internationally to sustain its continuity in India. At the same time, research and publishing were carried on at BTESSC in a manner benefiting theological education. [19] Vernacular language bibliographies were edited during Wilson's tenure at BTESSC along with Hunter P. Mabry and Zaihmingthanga, resulting in compilations titled Bibliography of Original Christian Writings (respective language). One such bibliography compiled by Ravela Joseph and B. Suneel Bhanu [20] has been a source book for original Christian writings through which successive Theologians have used these compilations to increase their scholarship and research. [21]

Global

As Executive Director of the Foundation for Theological Education in the Southeast Asia [3] based in Philadelphia, Wilson has been in the forefront of advancement of theological education both in mainland China as well as its neighbouring countries in South East Asia.

B. P. Sugandhar was the fifth successor of Frank Whittaker as Bishop - in - Medak of the Church of South India whose bishopric lasted for more than a decade and half from 1993 through 2009 coinciding with the archbishoprics of Samineni Arulappa and Marampudi Joji of the Archdiocese of Hyderabad.

Evangeline Anderson-Rajkumar is a feminist activist ecumenical theologian who taught at Serampore College, Serampore (1990-1994) the United Theological College, Bangalore, (1999-2014). Evangeline Anderson-Rajkumar was the first permanent woman faculty to serve as faculty in the Theology Department of the renowned Serampore College, founded by William Carey when he came to India in 1792. She was the first Lutheran Woman to serve as first Vice President of the United Evangelical Lutheran Churches in India in 2006. She comes from a family of theologians - about 17 of them, her father, all eight siblings, and seven of the eight who married into the family. Evangeline Anderson-Rajkumar served as the President of the Association of Theologically Trained Women of India (ATTWI) and is a sought after resource person on Body Theology.

Bishop Emeritus P. Surya Prakash was the fifth Bishop-in-Karimnagar Diocese of the Church of South India. from 2007 through 2014 and occupied the Cathedra in Karimnagar's Wesley Cathedral. He retired on account of superannuation in 2014 following which the Church of South India Synod headquartered in Chennai appointed a successor to him in 2015.

Eric J. Lott is a religious scholar who taught in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Of the Indian languages, he knew Sanskrit, Telugu and Kannada.

M. Victor Paul was a biblical scholar who served as President of the Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church from 1993 to 1997.

Samuel Amirtham was an Indian Bishop and Old Testament Scholar who taught in Spiritual formation centres affiliated to Senate of Serampore College (University), India's first University {a University under Section 2 (f) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956} founded by the Baptist Missions led by Joshua Marshman, William Carey, and William Ward.

B. Suneel Bhanu is President Emeritus of the Protestant Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church Society who served a term from 2009 through 2013. At present, Suneel Bhanu teaches at the Gurukul Lutheran Theological College, Chennai.

Ch. Victor Moses is President Emeritus of the Protestant Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church Society headquartered in Guntur. Victor Moses is an Old Testament Scholar and a member of the Society for Biblical Studies, India, an august body of learning having members well versed in Hebrew and Greek languages hailing from the Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox and Pentecostal traditions.

P. Solomon Raj(21 February 1921 - 28 December 2019) was a pastor of Protestant Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church Society headquartered in Guntur with major contribution to theological research and arts. Old Testament scholar Victor Premasagar wrote about Raj as a pastor, professor of communications, creative artist, sculptor, poet and a theological writer.

C. L. Furtado is CSI-Bishop Emeritus - in - Karnataka Southern of Church of South India. Furtado became the third Bishop on 25 August 1997, the date on which he was consecrated as Bishop in the diocese that is headquartered in Mangalore with the Cathedra of the Bishop placed at CSI-Shanthi Cathedral, Mangalore.

Bishop B. D. Prasada Rao(born 13.8.1952) is Bishop Emeritus - in - Rayalaseema Diocese of the Church of South India and past ex officio member of the Church of South India Synod for the period 2013-2019. He retired on attaining superannuation on 13 August 2019.

Bishop Emeritus John S. Roger Gaikwad(born February 13, 1953) was General Secretary of the National Council of Churches in India and has been in office from 2010 through 2019.

Daniel Rathnakara Sadananda is a New Testament Scholar who is re-elected as the General Secretary (Triennium 2017-2020) of the Church of South India Synod headquartered in Chennai as well as the Chairperson (triennium 2015-2018) of the Council of the United Theological College, Bangalore, the only autonomous College under the Senate of Serampore College (University). He also serves as the Vice President of National Council of Churches in India (2016-2020) as well Executive Secretary of the Communion of Churches in India comprising CNI, CSI, Marthoma Churches and now MCI.

G. Solomon(born 28 December 1910; died 6 February 1993) was an Old Testament Scholar and a Baptist Patriarch hailing from the Protestant Samavesam of Telugu Baptist Churches Society (an affiliate member of the Baptist World Alliance and the National Council of Churches in India) and led it as its President during the years 1978-1982 overseeing the spiritual affairs of the Church Society whose ecclesiastical jurisdiction comprises the three states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana with 873 Churches comprising nearly a million members per present statistics.

M. S. G. Lalitha Kumari a.k.a. Lalitha Krupa Rao was the eighth Principal of Eva Rose York Bible Training and Technical School for Women, Tuni. She held the term from 1993 through 2011. Lalitha was a theologically trained woman who also used to pastor a Church. With her ordination in 1992, she became the first Woman priest in the Protestant Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">G. D. Melanchthon</span>

G. D. Melanchthon (1934–1994) was a Silver Jubilee Priest hailing from Protestant Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church Society who taught Religions, at United Theological College, Bangalore from 1968 till the latter half of eighties until his career was brought to an abrupt end in 1988 on being stricken with paralysis. Melanchthon used to be quite active among the academic community along with Chrysostom Arangaden, Arvind P. Nirmal and others in not only delivering scholarly talks, but also in contributing research articles and reviewing new titles.
