Evenes Air Station is a military airbase of the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) located in the town of Evenes in Evenes Municipality, Nordland county, Norway.
The air station was initially opened in 1979 as a hub for Bodø Main Air Station, but became an independent entity in 1988. Operations at Evenes were reduced in 1993 and the station was taken out of full operational use.
In 2012, the parliament decided to turn Evenes into a forward air base for Quick Reaction Alert. [1] The air station will have a capacity for stationing a QRA of 15 fighter aircraft, as well as handling exercises with allied aircraft. The air station is estimated to produce 1,600 aircraft movements per year once operative.
From 1 January 2020, the new 133 Luftving was reestablished at Evenes. [2]
The first F-35 squadron started operations from Evenes in September 2021. [3]
U.S Marine Corps, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron VMFA-542 deployed to Evenes air station in february 2024. This was their first deployment with F-35B .
Evenes Air Stations is the main base for the Royal Norwegian Air Force in Northern Norway. [4] The Norwegian Defence Estates Agency was commissioned to ensure that sufficient construction (EBA) and infrastructure are in place by August 2022. Test operations together with the Armed Forces and the Air Force are expected to start at the same time. By the end of the first quarter of 2023, all EBA should be ready for the Armed Forces for full operation. What will be built on Evenes will cover the national needs of maritime patrol aircraft, as well as consist of offices and administrative facilities for the 333 Squadron.
Additionally, adaptation of hangars and the construction of facilities for the F-35, new construction of office buildings, officers' quarters, crew quarters and a hospital, as well as security measures will be constructed. The largest construction assignment is the P-8 hangar with associated operational surfaces, which will be ready in 2021/22. Runway arresting gear has been installed for the new fighter jets.
Evenes is the home base for the Royal Norwegian Air Force fleet of Boeing P-8 Poseidon, used for surveillance of the Barents Sea and the northern part of the Norwegian Sea. The first operational flights started in April 2023, and from 1.July 2023, the P8 Poseidon have taken over the responsibilities from their predecessor P3C Orion. [5]
Evenes Air Station has integrated air defence with an air defence batalion with Nasams III as main weapon, and there is also base defense. [6] By 2025, it is planned that there will be up to 500 employees and 300 conscripts at Evenes. [7]
The Fleet Air Arm (FAA) is the naval aviation component of the United Kingdom's Royal Navy (RN). The FAA is one of five RN fighting arms. As of 2023 it is a predominantly "rotary" force, with helicopters undertaking roles once performed by biplanes such as the Fairey Swordfish. The RNoAF's peacetime establishment is approximately 2,430 employees. 600 personnel also serve their draft period in the RNoAF. Number 617 Squadron is a Royal Air Force aircraft squadron, originally based at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire and currently based at RAF Marham in Norfolk. It is commonly known as "The Dambusters", for its actions during Operation Chastise against German dams during the Second World War. In the early 21st century it operated the Panavia Tornado GR4 in the ground attack and reconnaissance role until being disbanded on 28 March 2014. Bodø Air Station is a military air base of the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) located in the town of Bodø in Bodø Municipality, Nordland county, Norway. It is home to the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcons of the 331 and 332 Squadrons and a detachment of Westland Sea King search and rescue (SAR) helicopters of the 330 Squadron. Air defense is provided using NASAMS and RBS 70, with the battalion based at Bodin. About 1,000 employees work at the air station, of which 450 are conscripts. Operations at the air station are organized as the 132nd Air Wing, which includes the Norwegian Joint Headquarters at Reitan and a detachment of Sea Kings at Station Group Banak. Bodø serves as the main air station for Northern Norway and shares its 3,394-meter (11,135 ft) runway with Bodø Airport.
Andøya Air Station is a military air station in Andøy Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The station is located near the village of Andenes at the northern end of the island of Andøya in the Vesterålen archipelago. 333 Squadron of the Royal Norwegian Air Force is based here with Lockheed P-3C Orions. The squadron is Norway's only surveillance squadron and stands as the airborne defence of northern Norway. Andøya Air Station is designed to handle fighters and should it become necessary, fighter squadrons can be deployed to protect this region. Squadron 333 is the only Norwegian squadron still in operation after its initial deployment.

Canadian Forces Base Bagotville, commonly referred to as CFB Bagotville, and also known as Bagotville Airport or Saguenay-Bagotville Airport, is a Canadian Forces base located 4.5 nautical miles west of Bagotville in the city of Saguenay. RAAF Base Townsville is a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) air base located in Garbutt, 2 nautical miles west of Townsville in Queensland, Australia. It is the headquarters for No. 1 Wing Australian Air Force Cadets and, along with Lavarack Barracks, establishes Townsville as a key military centre. Naval Air Station Keflavik (NASKEF) is a United States Navy air station at Keflavík International Airport, Iceland, located on the Reykjanes peninsula on the south-west portion of the island. NASKEF was closed on 8 September 2006, and its facilities were taken over by the Icelandic Defence Agency as their primary base until 1 January 2011, when the Agency was abolished and the base handed over to the Icelandic Coast Guard, which has operated the base until 2017. US forces returned to Keflavik since 2016.
MDP Wethersfield is a Ministry of Defence facility in Essex, England, located north of the village of Wethersfield, about 6 mi (9.7 km) north-west of the town of Braintree. Originally an RAF station, the original accommodation areas have now been converted to become the headquarters and training centre of the Ministry of Defence Police.
The planning for the future of the Royal Air Force involves supporting ongoing British military operations, the introduction of new aircraft types including unmanned aerial vehicles, greater focus on network enabled capability and increasing interoperability with members of NATO, team tempest, and mixed crewed fighters. From the updated plans of the RAF (2021) state that the new initiative will focus on becoming carbon net-zero, with strategies such as using sustainable aviation fuels in aircraft. The RAF also are looking into investing in the maintenance of the aircraft to ensure success of future operations.
Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) is state of readiness and modus operandi of air defence maintained at all hours of the day by NATO air forces. The United States usually refers to Quick Reaction Alert as 'Airspace Control Alert'.
Flesland Air Station was a military air base situated at Flesland in Bergen, Norway. Part of the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF), it shares a 2,990-meter (9,810 ft) runway with Bergen Airport, Flesland. The air station has since 1999 had a mobilization status and is only manned with six employees. Its main structure is a subterranean hangar with space for 25 fighter jets.
