Every Man and Woman Is a Star is the second album by British electronic music duo Ultramarine. It was originally released in 1991 by Brainiak Records; a subsequent 1992 reissue on Rough Trade featured two additional tracks.
The album has been described as an early classic of the ambient techno/house scene. [1] [2] Its pastoral sound and incorporation of traditional folk instruments made it a progenitor of the folktronica genre. [2]
The album was recorded in London and mixed in Brussels with assistance from Colin James of Meat Beat Manifesto. [3] The recording involved collaborations with other musicians, an approach the group later expanded on. [3] According to Ian Cooper, the duo used the Akai S900 sampler to create tracks: "to be able to experiment and write loop-based tracks opened new worlds of possibilities for us. We could gather ‘70s west coast musicians for an acoustic backing track and write synth melodies on top whilst never leaving the bedroom in New Cross." [4] Hip hop sampling and bleep techno records were inspirations. [3] In a 2015 interview, Hammond recalled the process of recording the original album demos: "it came together so effortlessly. We still feel great warmth for the record and for the period it was made in." [5]
The phrase "Every man and woman is a star" is originally attributed to occultist Aleister Crowley and is found in The Book of the Law . [6] [7] Hammond stated that "I think we liked the idea of the all-inclusive slightly hippyish sound of it, but it coming from quite a dark, esoteric source." [3]
After its initial 1991 release on Brainiak, the album was reissued on Rough Trade Records in 1992 with additional tracks. [3]
In 2003, a remixed and expanded version of the album entitled Companion was released. This included alternative mixes (from 1990 to 1993) and live versions of the original album tracks as well as all tracks from the 1992 EP Nightfall in Sweetleaf.
The 2015 reissue of the album on Rough Trade was prompted by label head Geoff Travis. [5]

Critic Simon Reynolds called the album "the first and best stab at that seeming contradiction-in-terms, pastoral techno," likening it to "acid house suffused with the folky-jazzy ambience of Roy Harper, John Martyn, and the Canterbury Scene." [12] AllMusic called it "a warmly melodic LP of home-listening electronica produced just before the term was coined" and "an early ambient-techno classic." [1] PopMatters stated that the album "fit right in with the psychedelic, ethereal 'ambient house' or 'chill out' music of acts like the Orb, KLF, and Aphex Twin," describing the duo as "nature-loving would-be hippies who [...] translated that pastoral ethos into music that was full of breezy, midtempo rhythms and shaded in with traditional instruments like violin and harmonica." Selected Ambient Works Volume II is the second studio album by Aphex Twin, the pseudonym of British electronic musician Richard D. James. It was released by Warp in March 1994. Selected Ambient Works 85–92 is the debut studio album by Aphex Twin, the pseudonym of the British electronic music producer and DJ Richard D. James. It was released on 9 November 1992 through Apollo Records, a subsidiary of the Belgian label R&S Records. The album consists of ambient techno tracks recorded onto cassette reputedly dating as far back as 1985, when James was 13 to 14 years old. On release, it received widespread acclaim. It entered the UK Dance Albums Chart at No. 6 on 26 December 1992.
Emit Ecaps is the third album by English techno producer Jonah Sharp under his pseudonym Spacetime Continuum. It was released in February 1996 on Reflective Records in the United Kingdom and on Astralwerks in the United States. After establishing himself as a techno producer but then moving to an ambient style on his previous album Sea Biscuits (1994), Sharp's music on Emit Ecaps balances his techno and ambient styles with influences of drum and bass and jungle music. The name of the album reverses the term 'space time'. Emit Ecaps was a radio success and received acclaim from music journalists who praised Sharp's change in direction. The album was followed in November 1996 by Remit Recaps, a remix album of material from Emit Ecaps, created with the involvement of several producers.
Folktronica is a genre of music comprising various elements of folk music and electronica, often featuring uses of acoustic instruments – especially stringed instruments – and incorporating hip hop, electronic or dance rhythms, although it varies based on influences and choice of sounds. The Ashgate Research Companion to Popular Musicology describes folktronica as "a catch-all [term] for all manner of artists who have combined mechanical dance beats with elements of acoustic rock or folk like IXIM or Nicola cruz."
Elements 1989–1990 is a 1996 compilation of early recordings by Detroit techno musician Carl Craig, released under the pseudonyms Psyche and BFC. It was released on Craig's label Planet E Communications and reissued in 2013.
