FBUs Pokalturnering (unofficial English translation: FBU Cup or Funen Cup) was a Danish regional knockout association football competition contested annually from 1920 to 1953 by members of the regional football association Funen FA (FBU). Organised by and named after FBU, it was the third regional cup competition introduced on a national level, and the second in the province, after the KBUs Pokalturnering in 1910 and the LFBUs Pokalturnering in 1915. [1] [2] [3] The 1953 season of the cup tournament became the last edition due to the Danish FA's introduction of a new national-wide cup competition in 1954.
For the most part, the matches in the competition took place during the course of the fall season, beginning in the summer months with the first round, and culminating in a final match later in the same half season, but due to scheduling issues some finals and replay matches were not played until the following year. [4] Despite a modest start for the tournament, several cup matches evolved into major events, receiving much media coverage at both regional and national level, becoming topics of prolonged conversation in the local community and marking cities and villages for a few days. [5] [6] [7]
In the summer of 1920, the board of Funen FA formed a new cup tournament, named FBUs Pokalturnering, initially intended to be held during the months of August and September, hence taking place before the start of the regional association's own league tournaments. [9] The reasoning behind its establishment was to include an additional competitive tournament, that could function as training for players aiming towards being selected on the regional squad for the recently installed Sylow-Tournament, gather more interest from spectators and give the clubs an additional source of income. [9] The tournament was installed with rules applied for a knockout competition with the composition of the each match being determined by drawing lots. [9] In order to determine a match winner if a game was tied, an additional extra time (two periods of 15 minutes each) was to be played followed by 15 minutes with an early implementation of the golden goal format (g.e.t./g.g.) — the first team to score a goal would win the match giving a maximum of 135 minutes of total match play. [9] Between 1920 and 1928, the tournament rules stated that an additional extra time (two periods of 15 minutes each) should be played to determine cup finals, that were tied after full time (90 minutes). [2] In 1929, the rules were changed, so that a replay match was scheduled, if a semi-final or final match was tied. [2]
The rules has varied throughout the years, but the competition has always remained open to all Funen FA member clubs, both clubs playing in the association's city league tournaments (byklubber) and in village league tournaments (landklubber), basing participation on registration rather than qualification. [10] As a consequence the number of participants have varied greatly throughout the tournamenty's history starting with seven teams (B 1909, B 1913, Odense BK, Svendborg BK, Kerteminde FK, Assens G&IK and Hundslev BK) in the 1920 edition and steadily increasing the number to 66 teams in the 1944 edition. [10] [2] [6] [4] First introduced at the ninth cup edition, the tournament also began being open to reserve teams, who on several occasions were matched against the same club's first teams. [4] [2] B 1909's reserve team reached the semi-finals of the 1942 edition, where they were drawn against the club's first team, and losing the match 8–1. [11]
On 4 October 1919, the Danish government placed an amusement tax of 40% on certain sport events, which affected the conduct of and attendance figures at association football matches with admissions, causing either entrance fees to be abolished, making competitive and exhibition matches completely free or having clubs limit their games to active and passive members-only to avoid the taxation. [12] Hence, in order to attend the first cup final match on 29 August 1920 between Odense BK and reigning regional league champions B 1909, spectators had to already be (or become beforehand) a member of one of the regional football association's clubs. [13] [12] If a club decided to take admission to a cup match, the Funen FA had determined the entrance fee should be minimum DKK 1 (as per 1920) and half the price for children. [9]
Despite the Danish FA establishing the short-lived nation-wide cup tournament, Danmarkspokalturneringen in 1940, the regional Funen Cup tournament continued its existence. [7] At a meeting on 15 June 1945, the Funen FA cancelled the 1945 edition due to the difficult travel conditions in place at the end of Denmark's occupation in World War II, and instead focusing their efforts on rebooting the regional league tournaments. [14] [15] The Funen cup tournament was discontinued after the 1953 edition ahead of the introduction of the national-wide cup competition beginning in 1954, the DBUs Landspokalturnering, organised by the Danish FA (DBU).
The most successful club in the history of the tournament's 33 editions was B 1909, who won a total of fourteen cup titles and appeared as a losing finalist on nine occasions. [4] [3] Only seven clubs, and mostly clubs from the main city on the island of Funen, Odense (especially B 1909, B 1913 and Odense BK), appeared in the finals. A club had to win five cup championship finals, also known as lots, in order to keep the silver trophy permanently — the trophy was distributed as a perpetual prize kept by the winner until the next season. [10] The first trophy was financed by Fyns Boldspil-Union and was eventually won by B 1909 in 1930, the second trophy was won by B 1913 in 1939, while the third trophy, valued at DKK 600 (as per 1941), was won by B 1909 in 1944 after five consecutive cup titles and having the only club name on the trophy. [2] [6] [16] A fourth version of the trophy was installed by the Foreningen til Indkøb af Boldspilrekvisiter A/S (F.I.B.). [14]

KBUs Pokalturnering was a Danish regional knockout association football competition contested annually from 1910 to 1953 by clubs that were members of the regional football association Copenhagen FA (KBU). Organised by and named after KBU, the competition rules has varied from being open to all Copenhagen clubs and being a closed tournament (1920–1946) reserved only for the highest ranking clubs, and as a consequence the number of participants have varied greatly throughout its history. For the first 10 seasons, between 7 and 13 teams participated until a fixed number of 8 teams was introduced from 1920 until 1946. When both the Sommerpokalturneringen and the KBUs B-Pokalturnering, both featuring the lower ranking KBU teams, were discontinued after their 1946 edition, the Copenhagen FA again allowed lower ranking clubs to participate in the association's primary cup competition, increasing the number of teams to 52. For the most part, the competition took place in the fall season and since the 1913 edition culminating in a final played at Københavns Idrætspark that saw large attendance figures and generated much media coverage.
The 1926–27 Landsfodboldturneringen was the 14th edition of the Danish national football championship play-offs, a Danish FA-organised club football tournament between the championship clubs from each of the six regional football associations. In advance of the tournament, a play-off structure had been agreed, which meant that the winners of KBUs Mesterskabsrække were directly qualified for the national championship final against the winner of the Provincial tournament. The semi-finals consisted of two matches; on one side the champions of JBUs Mesterskabsrække played against the champions of FBUs Mesterskabsrække and in the other match, the champions of the LFBUs Mesterskabsrække tournament played against the winners of a preliminary round between the champions of SBUs Mesterskabsrække and BBUs Mesterskabsrække.
The 1927–28 Danmarksmesterskabsturneringen i Fodbold was the 1st edition of the new year-long league structure for the Danish national football championship play-offs, a Danish FA-organised club football tournament between the highest ranking clubs from each of the six regional football associations. The national tournament at the top of the Danish football league system consisted of two stages, a preliminary round contested by 20 teams split into 5 groups determined by draw and distributed evenly among all regional associations, where the five winners of each group would qualify for the final championship round held at the end of the season. The clubs participating in the nationwide competition were also simultaneously contesting in their local regional league championships.
Funen Series for men, also known as Albani Series for men for sponsorship reasons, and often shortened to FS serien and FS Herre, is the highest division for men organised by the regional football association DBU Fyn (DBUF) and one of the fifth-highest divisions overall in the Danish football league system. The league, deciding the Funen Football Championship, was first introduced with the 1904–05 season and throughout the years the competition format have gone through several series of changes. At the time of the league's introduction, it was placed at the top of the Danish football league system featuring the best regional amateur teams of Funen, but has since been moved to its current status as the fifth best level in Danish football, after a short period as the sixth best level, now featuring lower ranking amateur teams including the reserve squads of clubs playing at the Danish third league tier or above.
The 1926 KBUs Pokalturnering was the 17th edition of the regional tournament, KBUs Pokalturnering, the highest senior cup competition organised by the Copenhagen FA (KBU). The season was launched with one match on 22 August 1926 between the last season's runners-up in Copenhagen Football League B.93 and the newly promoted league club BK Fremad Amager. This season's installment was won by B.93 after defeating Kjøbenhavns BK 5–1 in the final played at Københavns Idrætspark on 7 November 1926, which was the club's fifth cup title after having contested in eight finals of the tournament. The 8 participants in the tournament included the six members of the 1925–26 KBUs Mesterskabsrække and the two highest placed teams from the 1925–26 KBUs A-række.
The 1926–27 FBUs Mesterskabsrække was the 23rd season of the Funen Football Championship since its establishment in 1904 under the administration of Fyns Boldspil-Union (FBU). This was the first season played under the new name, Mesterskabsrækken, after the top-flight Funen league had previously been named A-rækken, a name that was passed on to the Funen second tier league. The launch of the season began on 26 September 1926 with three matches and the final round of regular league fixtures were played in April 1927 with the play-off matches being held on 1–8 May 1927. The league ran simultaneously with the inaugural edition of the 1927–28 Danmarksmesterskabsturneringen i Fodbold, in which three the league's best placed teams from the previous season participated. The three highest ranking teams in the final standings would automatically qualify for the 1928–29 Danmarksmesterskabsturneringen i Fodbold. All eligible teams in the FBUs Mesterskabsrække including the top placed teams of the 1927–28 FBUs A-række would also participate in the next season of the Funen regional cup tournament, 1928 FBUs Pokalturnering. Amager Boldspil-Union, shortened to ABU, was a subregional governing body for men's association football on the island of Amager, Denmark. The Amager Football Association governed the league and cup tournaments for the official championship of Amager, known as ABUs Amager-Turnering and ABUs Pokalturnering since its inception in March 1912. In 1916, the association's clubs formed the regional Københavns Forstadsklubbers Boldspil-Union (KFBU). Representative teams, either composed of individual clubs and a selection of players from several teams, referred to as Amager, competed in KFBU tournaments or in exhibition matches against other representative teams and clubs. The subregional football association published a member's magazine known as Unionsbladet, which evolved into the KFBU magazine known as Fodboldbladet.
