Fabio Adrien Rakotoarimanana (born 24 July 2003) is a French-born table tennis player who switched allegiances to compete for Madagascar in 2022. He qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics, where he was chosen as a flag-bearer and became Madagascar's first Olympic table tennis player.

Career

Rakotoarimanana began playing table tennis at the age of seven. [1] At the 2014 national championships, while competing in the in the benjamins (under-11) category, he won the silver medal in the singles event, and partnered with Alexis Lebrun to win gold in doubles. [2] In 2015, the pair of Rakotoarimanana and Lebrun won a bronze in the doubles event in the minimes (under-13) category, [3] followed by a silver-medal doubles finish in 2016. [4]

Rakotoarimanana competed at the Eurominichamps.

In April 2018, Rakotoarimanana partnered with Félix Lebrun to win the cadet (under-15) boys' doubles title at the Belgium Junior and Cadet Open. [5] In July, he competed in the cadet category at the European Youth Championships, where he won two gold medals in the boys' doubles and boys' team events. [6]

Rakotoarimanana was selected as a flag-bearer for Madagascar at the 2023 Francophone Games, [7] where he won silver in the singles event after losing to Eduard Ionescu in the final. [8]

Switch to Madagascar

In a 2018 interview, Rakotoarimanana expressed his desire to represent Madagascar in international competition. [1] In December 2022, his father announced that he had accepted an invitation from the Malagasy Table Tennis Federation to join the national team. [1]

At the 2009 Jeux de la Francophonie, the table tennis events were hosted at the club facilities of Homenetmen Beirut from 28 September to 4 October. A total of 54 competitors, 28 men and 26 women, took part in four different tournaments: a men's individual competition, a women's individual competition, a mixed doubles competition, and a team tournament.

At the 2005 Jeux de la Francophonie, the athletics events were held at the Stade Général Seyni Kountché in Niamey, Niger, from 11–16 December 2005. A total of 43 events were contested, of which 23 by male and 20 by female athletes. France sent the largest squad and topped the medal table with 19 gold medals and 39 medals in total. Morocco was the next most successful nation, having won 11 golds and 31 medals altogether. This was large as a result of their middle- and long-distance running dominance which saw them take all three medals in four events, as well as three separate Moroccan 1–2 finishes. Canada and the Ivory Coast were third and fourth in the medal tally. Twenty of the 37 nations competing won a medal, although hosts Niger went empty-handed in the athletics competition.

Thom Mark Gicquel is a French badminton player. Competing in the mixed doubles, he was able to reach the top 10 of the BWF world rankings with his partner Delphine Delrue. Together with Delrue, he won the gold medal in the 2024 European Championships; silver in the 2022 European Championships, and 2023 European Games; and also bronze in the 2019 European Games.

Georges Julien Paul is a Mauritian badminton player. Paul took part at the 2014 African Youth Games, and won three gold medals in the individual event. He was part of the national team that won the gold medal at the 2015 African Games. Paul won the men's singles title at the 2018 and 2020 African Championships.

Additionally, a French segment was performed in Paris and some pre-recorded events at the closing ceremony as performers did not travel to Tokyo due to the travel restrictions related to the pandemic. However, Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo was the only delegation present at the ceremony.
