Pharmacists often serve as primary care providers in the community, and may offer other services such as health screenings and immunizations.

Maria Odette Santos Ferreira was a Portuguese professor of microbiology who played an important role in research on HIV, through the identification of the HIV-2 virus in association with the Pasteur Institute of Paris. She was also the coordinator of the Portuguese programme to fight AIDS, overseeing the "Say no to a second-hand syringe" project, which resulted in the collection and exchange by pharmacies of 43 million used syringes between 1993 and 2008.
Ana Paula Mecheiro de Almeida Martins Silvestre Correia is a Portuguese pharmacist and politician. She graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon in 1990. She completed her master's degree in Epidemiology at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in 1995 and her PhD in Clinical Pharmacy at the Faculty of Pharmacy of Lisbon in May 2005. Martins was elected to the Portuguese National Assembly in the March 2024 national election as a member of the Social Democratic Party, representing the Lisbon constituency.
