Fahim Rahim (born December 14, 1973) is an American Nephrologist [1] and chairman of Idaho based JRM foundation For humanity [2] and Co-founder of Idaho Kidney Institute. [3] He received the Ellis Island Medals of Honor for his contribution to achievements in dialysis and kidney care. [4]

Early life and education

Rahim a Pakistani American was born in Peshawar, Pakistan as his father Mohammad Rahim was an Army officer [5] and mother was a nurse in the Army. He went to Aga Khan medical college for medicine and graduated in 1997. He is fluent in English, Urdu and Punjabi. [6]

Career

Medical practice

Fahim & his brother Naeem Rahim trained from New York Medical College in internal medicine and later nephrology. They choose to move to a small town in Idaho to provide better health care to the much needed rural America. Naeem Rahim and Fahim Rahim both received Ellis Island Medals of Honor in 2010 and subsequently multiple congressional records [7] in recognition of their services to state of Idaho. [8] They were the first Idahoans to receive the Ellis Island Medals of Honor. They decided to honor the people of Idaho and started JRM foundation For humanity. [9] Fahim Rahim & Naeem also started Idaho hometown heroes Medal [10] which identifies and celebrates individuals who serve their communities in Idaho. Dr. Fahim Rahim is affiliated with Bingham Memorial Hospital [11] and Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. [12]

Philanthropy

On April 25, 2015, the Nepal earthquake [13] with a magnitude of 7.8Mw caused severe devastation in Nepal. More than 8,800 deaths were reported while more than 23,000 people reportedly suffered from light to heavy injuries. In response to the Nepal earthquake, Rahim had led a humanitarian mission with one of the largest privately funded American relief team in 2015 Nepal earthquake which very quickly turned into one of the largest International team with hundreds of volunteers and people from many countries including America, Canada, India, Pakistan, Nepal and Dubai. [14] [15] [16] [17] Dr. Fahim initiated a #MillionDollarChallenge CrowdRise crowdfunding campaign to President Obama with the goal of raising $1 Million, [18] that went viral. The JRM Foundation raised close to $180,000 from the campaign. Fahim also wrote a Congressional letter with a petition that was signed by over 25 American and International Nepali organizations out of the US. [19] After spending two weeks in Nepal helping with the relief efforts, Fahim returned to East Idaho and hosted a rally at Klyde Warren Park to provide quake relief to Nepal. [20]

A photography exhibition displayed through April 5, 2015 at Wood River Community YMCA “The Face of Hope”. The exhibit, with photographed by Rahim themed raises awareness and explores the hardships of bonded slavery and child labor. [21]

Cycling

Fahim raced 100 mile races and sponsored and raised money for Idaho Trails and healthy life styles. [22]

Abdul Sattar Edhi Pakistani philanthropist

Abdus Sattar EdhiNI LPP GPA was a Pakistani humanitarian, philanthropist and ascetic who founded the Edhi Foundation, which runs the world's largest volunteer ambulance network, along with various homeless shelters, animal shelters, rehabilitation centres, and orphanages across Pakistan. Following his death, his son Faisal Edhi took over as head of the Edhi Foundation.

The Ellis Island Honors Society (EIHS) is a United States 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to honor and preserve cultural diversity and to foster tolerance, respect and understanding among ethnic groups. The EIHS was founded in 1984 as the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO) and adopted its current name in 2017. The EIHS awards the "Ellis Island Medal of Honor" to naturalized or native-born American citizens "who preserve and celebrate the history, traditions and values of their [ethnic heritage] while exemplifying the values of the American way of life".

April 2015 Nepal earthquake Magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Nepal

The April 2015 Nepal earthquake killed 8,964 people and injured 21,952 more. It occurred at on Saturday, 25 April 2015, with a magnitude of 7.8Mw or 8.1Ms and a maximum Mercalli Intensity of X (Extreme). Its epicenter was east of Gorkha District at Barpak, Gorkha, and its hypocenter was at a depth of approximately 8.2 km (5.1 mi). It was the worst natural disaster to strike Nepal since the 1934 Nepal–Bihar earthquake. The ground motion recorded in the capital of Nepal was of low frequency, which, along with its occurrence at an hour where many people in rural areas were working outdoors, decreased the loss of property and human lives.

Operation Maitri was a rescue and relief operation in Nepal by the government of India and Indian armed forces in the aftermath of the April 2015 Nepal earthquake. Indian government responded within few minutes of the quake. It started on 26 April 2015 and also involved Nepali ex-servicemen from India's Gurkha Regiments for interface for guidance, relief and rescue.

An earthquake struck Nepal at 11:56:54 NST on 25 April 2015 with a moment magnitudeof 7.8 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent). It was the most powerful earthquake to strike Nepal since the 1934 Nepal–Bihar earthquake. Many thousands of people died, with most casualties reported in Nepal, and adjoining areas of India, China, and Bangladesh.

A major earthquake occurred in Nepal on 12 May 2015 at 12:50 pm local time with a moment magnitude of 7.3, 18 kilometres (11 mi) southeast of Kodari. The epicenter was on the border of Dolakha and Sindhupalchowk, two districts of Nepal. This earthquake occurred on the same fault as the larger magnitude 7.8 earthquake of 25 April, but further east than the original quake. As such, it is considered to be an aftershock of the April quake. It struck at a depth of 18.5 km (11.5 mi). Shaking was felt in northern parts of India including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Tremors were felt as far as about 2,400 km away from the epicenter in Chennai.

The Nepal humanitarian crisis (2015-2017) developed owing to a lack of action following the April 2015 Nepal earthquake and its aftershocks. It was compounded by political factors as a result of the 2015 Nepal blockade. Victims of the earthquakes were still living in flimsy, temporary shelters more than a year after the initial devastation. The governmental National Reconstruction Authority had not devised relocation plans for these people as recently as July 2016. In Sindhupalchok District, the region that had suffered the worst devastation, the humanitarian situation was a little better towards the end of 2016 than it had been in 2015.

Bilqees Sarwar Foundation

The Bilqees Sarwar Foundation (BSF) is a registered non-profit organization based in Lahore, Pakistan, which provides public health and education support to the local community as well as around the world. It was established by the Sarwar family, and cooperates with NRS International, a Dubai-based disaster relief supplier with a manufacturing facility in Pakistan.

Rahul M. Jindal Indian-American doctor

Rahul M. Jindal is an Indian–American transplant surgeon, professor, humanitarian and author. In 2008, he set up a renal replacement therapy program which led to the only comprehensive kidney transplant and dialysis program in Guyana. As of 2019, he is a professor in the Department of Surgery at Uniformed Services University, Bethesda, Maryland. Since 2008, he has been an attending transplant surgeon at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center where he performs kidney transplants and mentors senior-level students and residents in surgical sciences and global health. Since 2005, he has been a Commissioner at the Montgomery County Office of Human Rights, Maryland. He also serves as Commissioner for the Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism in Maryland. Jindal is also an adjunct Professor of Global Health at the Indian Institute of Public Health, Gandhinagar.
