Fares Arfa (born October 16, 1994) is a Canadian fencer in the sabre discipline. [1] Arfa has won multiple medals at the Pan American level.
Arfa's first major international result came in 2014, when he won the gold medal at the Pan American Junior Fencing Championships in Guatemala City. [2] Arfa was part of the last five Pan American Fencing Championships sabre team who won the silver medal, losing to the United States each time. [3] At the 2022 World Fencing Championships in Cairo, Egypt, Arfa finished 16th in the individual event, the highest placing for Arfa at the event. [4]
Arfa has won a medal of each colour at the Pan American Games. Arfa made his Pan American Games debut at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, where he won the silver medal in the team sabre event. Four years later Arfa was named to his second Pan American Games team. [5] At the 2023 Pan American Games, Arfa won the gold medal in the men's team sabre event and the bronze medal in the individual event. [6]
In 2024, Arfa helped Canada qualify a sabre team for the 2024 Summer Olympics for the first time since 1996. [7] [8] Arfa was officially named to Canada's 2024 Olympic team in April 2024. [9] [10] In the first round of the men's individual sabre competition, Arfa defeated three-time reigning Olympic champion Áron Szilágyi of Hungary by 15-8, serving Szilágyi his first Olympic defeat since 2008. [11] He then won his second round match against Boladé Apithy of France by 15-8 before falling in the quarterfinal 13-15 to the South Korean former world champion and eventual gold medalist Oh Sang-uk. Keeth Thomas Smart is an American saber fencer, who was the first American to gain the sport's top ranking for males in saber. A three-time Olympian, he won a silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing in team sabre.
Nikolay Anatolyevich Kovalev is a Russian former sabre fencer. He won a bronze medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and a gold medal in the 2014 World Championships in Kazan. He is three-times World team champion and twice European team champion. He is now a coach in California in the United States.
Diego Occhiuzzi is an Italian fencer and olympic medal winner in team sabre competition. At the 2012 Summer Olympics he competed in the Men's sabre where he lost to Áron Szilágyi in the final round to win the silver medal. He was also part of the Italian men's sabre team that won the bronze medal.

Aliaksandr Mikalayevich Buikevich is a Belarusian sabre fencer, European champion in 2008 and team silver medallist at the 2011 World Championships in Catania. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, he reached the quarter-finals in the individual sabre, losing to Romania's Mihai Covaliu, while the Belarusian sabre team also reached the quarter-finals. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he competed in the men's sabre, but was defeated in the table of 16 by Romania's Rareș Dumitrescu. The Belarusian team again reached the quarter-finals. Buikevich qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro as the only Belarusian fencer. In men's sabre in the table of 32 he defeated Joseph Polossifakis of Canada. He could not advance to the quarter-finals as in the table of 16 he lost to the eventual winner Áron Szilágyi of Hungary, who claimed his second consecutive gold medal at the Olympics individual men's sabre. Buikevich finished 12th in the event.
Tiberiu Dolniceanu is a Romanian sabre fencer, European champion in 2013 and bronze medal in the 2013 World championships. As part of Romania's sabre team, he won the team silver medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics and the team gold medal in the 2009 World Championships in Antalya.

Daryl Homer earned the United States' first medal in the event since 1984 with his silver, while Kim Jung-hwan took South Korea's first individual men's sabre medal ever with his bronze.
