Faruk Rashid Chowdhury is a Jatiya Party politician from Bangladesh and the former Minister of Finance. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Early life and background

Choudhury was born into a Bengali Muslim political family in Rashid Manzil near Dargah Gate, Sylhet. His ancestral home is in Dargapasha, Sunamganj District. [5] He was one of seven children of Abdur Rasheed Choudhury (d. 1944) and Begum Serajunnessa Choudhury (1910–1974), and a younger brother of Humayun Rashid Choudhury. [6] Abdur Rasheed was a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly and later a member of the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi, while Serajunessa was elected a member of Pakistan National Assembly. [7]

Political career

Chowdhury participated in a 1987 by-election as a Communist Party candidate and successfully won the Sunamganj-3 constituency seat at the 3rd Jatiya Sangsad. He did a second term in the same constituency after winning the 1988 Bangladeshi general election as a Jatiya Party candidate. Chowdhury lost his seat to Abdus Samad Azad of the Awami League at the 1991 Bangladeshi general election. He attempted to regain the seat at the June 1996 Bangladeshi general elections but lost to Azad once again. [1] [2] [3] [8]

The Jatiya Sangsad, often referred to simply as the Sangsad or JS and also known as the House of the Nation, is the supreme legislative body of Bangladesh. Humayun Rasheed Choudhury was a Bangladeshi career diplomat and Speaker of the Bangladesh National Parliament from 1996 to 2001. He was elected president of the 41st session of the UN General Assembly in 1986. He was awarded Independence Day Award in 2018 posthumously by the Government of Bangladesh.

Chowdhury is a title of honour, usually hereditary, originating from the Indian subcontinent. It is an adaption from Sanskrit. During the Mughal rule, it was a title awarded to eminent people, while during British rule, the term was associated with zamindars and social leaders. The common female equivalent was Chowdhurani. Many landlords under the Permanent Settlement carried this surname. Land reforms after the partition of India abolished the permanent settlement. In modern times, the term is a common South Asian surname for both males and females.

Sunamganj-3 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad of Bangladesh since 2008 by M. A. Mannan of the Awami League.

Nozir Hossain A politician in Sunamganj district of Sylhet Division of Bangladesh. He was elected the first Member of Parliament from the Communist Party of Bangladesh in Sunamganj-1 seat in the 1991 Jatiya Sangsad. He joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party on 15 October 1993. Later, for the second time in February 1996 and for the third time on the 2001 the Bangladesh Nationalist Party was elected to the same seat.

Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury is a Bangladeshi politician and a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Sunamganj-3 constituency during 2005–2006. He was elected a member of parliament for the first time in July 2005 after the death of incumbent Abdus Samad Azad, a Awami League Presidium member.

Nasir Uddin Chowdhury is a politician in Sunamganj District of Sylhet Division of Bangladesh. He was elected Member of Parliament from the Sunamganj-2 (Derai-Shala) seat for the Jatiya Party in the June 1996 7th parliamentary elections.

Abul Hasnat Muhammad Abdul Hai was a Bangladeshi politician. He was elected a member of the Jatiya Sangsad from the seats of 227 Sunamganj-4 and 228-Sunamganj-5 (Chhatak-Dowarabazar). He was elected a member of parliament for the first time as an independent candidate from Sylhet-4 in the 1973 first parliamentary elections. In the second parliamentary election an independent candidate in 1979, he was elected a member of the parliament in the Sylhet-5 constituency. He was a member of the Jatiya Party's elected a member of the parliament from Sunamganj-5 seat in the last 1986 in the third parliamentary election.

Khurram Khan Chowdhury was a Bangladeshi politician who served four terms in parliament. Initially elected as a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), he resigned from the BNP, joined the Jatiya Party, and later returned to the BNP.

Begum Serajunnessa Choudhury was a Member of the 3rd National Assembly of Pakistan as a representative of East Pakistan.

Abdul Hoque was a Bangladeshi politician, lawyer and teacher. He was elected as an Awami League candidate at the 1970 Pakistani general election, although the assembly was not inaugurated. He participated as a freedom fighter during the Bangladesh Liberation War.
