Fatima Lamarti (born 16 December 1966) is a Belgian politician and member of the Chamber of Representatives. [1] A member of Vooruit,she has represented Flemish Brabant since June 2024.
Lamarti was born on 16 December 1966 in Vilvoorde and is of Moroccan origin. [1] [2] Her mother is from Tangier and her father is from the Rif Mountains region. [3] She was a school development worker for the municipal council in Vilvoorde for many years. [2] [4] She was later a manager at a transport company. [4] She was also active in PROJO,a progressive youth organisation. [2]
Lamarti was elected to the municipal council in Vilvoorde at the 2000 local election. [2] She was re-elected at the 2006,2012 and 2018 local elections. [5] [6] [7] She was Schepen (alderman) for education and social integration,Schepen for social affairs and equal opportunities,and a member of the board of directors of Incovo ,the local municipal waste company in northern Halle-Vilvoorde. [4] [8] She was elected to the provincial council in Flemish Brabant at the 2006 local elections. [9] She was re-elected at the 2012 and 2018 local elections. [10] [11] She resigned from the provincial council in July 2019. [12]
Lamarti unsuccessfully contested the 2009,2014 and 2019 regional elections in Flemish Brabant. [13] [14] [15] She was elected to the Chamber of Representatives at the 2024 federal election. [16] She is contesting the 2024 local election as Vooruit's lead candidate for the provincial council in Flemish Brabant and would be required to give up her seat in the Chamber of Representatives if she is elected to the provincial council. Flemish Brabant is a province of Flanders,one of the three regions of Belgium. It borders on the Belgian provinces of Antwerp,Limburg,Liège,Walloon Brabant,Hainaut and East Flanders. Flemish Brabant also surrounds the Brussels-Capital Region. Its capital is Leuven. It has an area of 2,118 km2 (818 sq mi) which is divided into two administrative districts containing 65 municipalities. As of January 2024,Flemish Brabant had a population of over 1.19 million.
West Flanders is one of the 11 multi-member constituencies of the Chamber of Representatives,the lower house of the Belgian Federal Parliament,the national legislature of Belgium. The constituency was established in 2003 following the re-organisation of constituencies across Belgium along provincial lines. It is conterminous with the province of West Flanders. The constituency currently elects 16 of the 150 members of the Chamber of Representatives using the open party-list proportional representation electoral system. At the 2019 federal election the constituency had 942,783 registered electors.
