Favourable Terms (foaled 4 March 2000) is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Unraced as a two-year-old, she showed very good form as a three-year-old in 2003 when she won three of her five races including the Distaff Stakes in England and the Matron Stakes in Ireland. In the following year she reached her peak with wins in the Windsor Forest Stakes and the Nassau Stakes. Her later career was compromised by back problems but she did win the Sceptre Stakes in 2005. After her retirement from racing she became a broodmare and has had some success as a dam of winners.

Background

Favourable Terms was a bay mare with a white star bred in the United Kingdom by her owner, Maktoum Al Maktoum's Gainsborough Stud. She was sired by Selkirk an American-bred miler who won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in 1991. As a breeding stallion, Selkirk's progeny include fifteen Group One winners including Wince, Cityscape (Dubai Duty Free), Leadership (Gran Premio di Milano) and Kastoria (Irish St. Leger) as well as the Champion Hurdler Sublimity. [2] Favourable Terms' dam Fatefully was an American-bred mare who raced successfully in Europe, winning four races including the Listed October Stakes in 1996. [3] She was a distant female-line descendant of Flambino, an American broodmare who was the dam of Omaha and Flares. [4]

Favourable Terms was sent into training with Michael Stoute at Newmarket, Suffolk and was ridden in most of her races by Kieren Fallon.

Racing career

2003: three-year-old season

Favourable Terms did not race as a two-year-old in 2002 and made her racecourse debut in a maiden race over seven furlongs at Goodwood Racecourse on 21 May 2003. Starting the 11/4 favourite in a fifteen-runner field she overcame a slow start and an obstructed passage before accelerating into the lead a furlong out and winning by one and a quarter lengths from the Mick Channon-trained Pennyghael. The filly was immediately stepped up in class for the Listed Distaff Stakes over one mile at Sandown Park Racecourse and started 7/4 favourite ahead of eight opponents headed by the Albany Stakes winner Duty Paid. Fallon restrained the favourite at the rear of the field before Favourable Terms began to make progress in the last quarter mile. She took the lead 75 yards from the finish and won "readily" by a neck from Miss Ivanhoe. [5] Two weeks later Favourable Terms was moved up in class and distance for the Golden Daffodil Stakes over ten furlongs at Chepstow Racecourse and started favourite ahead of the four-year-old Chorist who had won the Group One Pretty Polly Stakes on her last appearance. She sustained her first defeat as Chorist led from the start and beat her into second place by two and a half lengths.

In September Favourable Terms was sent to Ireland to contest the Group Two Matron Stakes over one mile at Leopardstown Racecourse in which her opponents included Perfect Touch (Brownstown Stakes), Cat Belling (Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial), Dossier (Platinum Stakes), Soldera (Valiant Stakes) and Shizao (Tipperary Stakes). In a change of tactics, Favourable Terms raced in second behind the outsider Dixie Evans before taking the lead early in the straight. She went clear of the field a furlong out before being eased down by Fallon and winning "cheekily" by a neck from Perfect Touch. [6] [7] On her final appearance of the season, Favourable Terms started favourite for the Group Two Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse on 4 October in which she was ridden by Pat Eddery. Her owner showed great confidence in his filly before the race, announcing that "she will win". [8] After starting slowly Favourable Terms made some progress approaching the straight but was unable to close on the leaders and finished fifth behind the Godolphin filly Echoes In Eternity.

2004: four-year-old season

After an absence of over eight months, Favourable Terms return in the inaugural running of the Group Two Windsor Forest Stakes at Royal Ascot on 16 June and started 13/2 second favourite behind the South African mare Crimson Palace who had won the Middleton Stakes on her British debut. The other runners included Chic, Beneventa (Dahlia Stakes), Gonfilia (Princess Elizabeth Stakes), Marbye (Premio Emilio Turati), Actrice (Prix Corrida) and Soldera. She was settled behind the leaders before making progress in the straight and went to the front approaching the final furlong. She drew away in the closing stages and won by two lengths from the outsider Monturani. [9] Fallon described the winner as "the most fluent mover I've ever ridden". [10] Three weeks later she contested the Group One Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket but ran poorly and finished sixth of the seven runners behind Soviet Song.

In late July Favourable Terms stepped up in distance for the ten-furlong Nassau Stakes at Goodwood in which she started third choice in the betting behind her old rival Chorist and the Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes winner Zosima. The other three runners were Echoes In Eternity, Silence Is Golden (Rosebery Stakes) and Mehoubah (Oaks d'Italia). Echoes In Eternity set the pace before giving was to Chorist in the straight, but Favourable Terms took the advantage a furlong out and hald off the late challenge of Silence Is Golden to win by a short head, with Chorist a neck away in third. [11] The result was only confirmed after a stewards inquiry into possible interference caused when Favourable Terms hung to the right in the closing stages. [12] After the race Michael Stoute, who was winning the race for the seventh time, said "We've won it with some very good ones, but she's a very admirable filly. We've had a lot of problems with her back and sometimes that compromises her. We have the physios working on her all the time". [13]

2005: five-year-old season

Favourable Terms was off the course for well over a year with back problems before returning as a five-year-old in the autumn of 2005. In the Listed Sceptre Stakes at Doncaster Racecourse she started the 5/6 favourite against eight younger fillies and won "comfortably" by two lengths from the Eternal Stakes winner Nufoos. [14]

In her two remaining races Favourable Terms made little impact. In the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket in October she was ridden by Jimmy Fortune she started second favourite but finished eighth of the ten runners behind Peeress. At the end of the month she was sent to the United States for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. She started a 20/1 outsider and stayed on in the straight to finish fifth behind Intercontinental.

In two races as a two-year-old she won one race, and finished third in the Group One Fillies' Mile at Ascot. On her three-year-old debut she was beaten in the Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury but then won the Classic 1000 Guineas at Newmarket Racecourse. At four she raced creditably against male opposition before returning to all-female competition to win a second Yorkshire Oaks and the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Despite racing only once in North America in 2003 she was voted American Champion Female Turf Horse at the Eclipse Awards.

In a racing career which lasted from November 2003 until May 2007 raced eighteen times and won seven races, showing her best form over a distance of one mile. After finishing third in her only race as a two-year-old and won three times in the following year but appeared to be below top class. As a four-year-old she showed considerable improvement, winning the Windsor Forest Stakes in June and the Group One Sun Chariot Stakes in October. As a five-year-old she won a second race at the highest level, defeating male opposition in the Lockinge Stakes. In addition to her victories, she was placed in the Falmouth Stakes, Prix Jacques Le Marois and Matron Stakes. Peeress was retired to stud in 2007 and has made a successful start as a broodmare.

Hycilla was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare, who raced during World War II and was best known for winning the classic Oaks Stakes in 1944. As a two-year-old in 2004 she won three of her seven races including the Sweet Solera Stakes and Rockfel Stakes as well as being placed in both the May Hill Stakes and the Fillies' Mile. As a three-year-old she finished second in the classic 1000 Guineas and then recorded her biggest win in the Coronation Stakes. At the end of the year she was bought by Sheikh Mohammed and retired from racing to become a broodmare. Her name has always been rendered without an apostrophe, consistently with the street of that name alongside Midsummer Common in Cambridge.

Hellenic was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare bred by the Ballymacoll Stud. After finishing unplaced in her only start as a juvenile, she improved to become a top-class stayer in the summer and autumn of 1990. She won both the Ribblesdale Stakes and the Yorkshire Oaks before finishing second when favourite for the St Leger and being the first filly home in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. She later became an outstanding broodmare, producing Islington, and several other major winners. She was retired from breeding in 2010 and died a year later.

Sally Brown was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was owned and bred by Robert Cowell and trained by Michael Stoute. She did not race as a juvenile but emerged as a top-class middle-distance performer in 1985, winning three of her six races including the Ribblesdale Stakes and the Yorkshire Oaks. She was retired at the end of the season and had modest success as a broodmare.

Pass the Peace was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the best two-year-old fillies of her generation in Britain and Ireland in 1988, when she won four races including the Debutante Stakes and the Cheveley Park Stakes. After winning the Fred Darling Stakes on her three-year-old debut she failed to win again, although she was placed in both the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and the Sun Chariot Stakes. She later became a successful broodmare.

Red Bloom is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from July 2003 until October 2006 she ran nineteen times, competing in four different countries and won six times as well as being placed on seven occasions. As a juvenile she graduated from a maiden race victory to record her biggest success in the Group One Fillies' Mile. In the following year she was the beaten favourite for the 1000 Guineas but won the Strensall Stakes. She remained in training for two more seasons, winning the Pipalong Stakes and two editions of the Blandford Stakes. Apart from her wins, she reached the frame in the Coronation Stakes, Pretty Polly Stakes, Nassau Stakes and Prix Jean Romanet. At the end of her racing career she became broodmare for her owner, the Cheveley Park Stud.

Majestic Roi is an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed promise as a two-year-old in 2006, winning a maiden race on her second appearance and in the following spring she made an immediate impact with an upset victory in the Fred Darling Stakes. She subsequently finished second in the Prix de Sandringham but was well beaten in her next three races before ending her season with a career-best performance to win the Group One Sun Chariot Stakes at odds of 16/1. She raced eight times without success in 2008 before being retired from the track. She has had some success as a dam of winners.

Red Evie is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After finishing unplaced in her only start as a two-year-old in 2005 she improved to become a top class miler in the following year, when she won seven consecutive races including the Sandringham Handicap, Oak Tree Stakes and Matron Stakes. She defeated male opposition to win the Lockinge Stakes in 2007 and added a win in the Hungerford Stakes later that year before being retired from racing. As a broodmare for the Coolmore Stud she has made a considerable impact, producing several winners including the outstanding racemare Found.

Persuasive (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Persuasive is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. After winning her only race as a juvenile she ran up four consecutive wins in the following season including the Sandringham Handicap and the Atalanta Stakes before her winning streak was ended by Alice Springs in the Matron Stakes. In 2017 she was placed in both the Matron Stakes and the Sun Chariot Stakes before recording her most significant victory when she became the first horse of her age and sex in more than 40 years to take the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

Quarter Moon was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2001 she showed considerable promise, taking the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes on the second of her two starts. In the following year she failed to win but showed top class form to finish second in four Group 1 races: the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the Epsom Oaks, the Irish Oaks and the Nassau Stakes. After retiring from racing at the end of the year she became a successful broodmare whose foals have included the Pretty Polly Stakes winner Diamondsandrubies.

Twafeaj was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from May 1991 until October 1992 she ran fourteen times in four different countries and won three races. As a juvenile in 1991 she finished second in the Princess Margaret Stakes before recording her biggest win in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes. As a three-year-old she struggled for form early in the year but did much better when switched to sprint races, winning the Prix de Meautry as well as being placed in the Prix Maurice de Gheest and the Goldene Peitsche. All At Sea was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After easily winning her only race as a juvenile she won her first three starts in the following spring including the Pretty Polly Stakes and the Musidora Stakes. She went on to run second in the Epsom Oaks, Nassau Stakes and International Stakes before recording her biggest success in the Prix du Moulin. She was retired from racing after finishing fourth in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. As a broodmare she produced several minor winners but no top-class performers.

Chorist was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was a consistent performer at eight to ten furlongs who improved through her four seasons on the track. After running unplaced on her only start as a two-year-old she won four races including the Upavon Fillies' Stakes as a three-year-old in 2002. She improved in the following year when she took the Hoppings Stakes, Golden Daffodil Stakes and Blandford Stakes. At the age of five in 2004 she reached her peak with wins in the Pipalong Stakes and Pretty Polly Stakes as well as finishing second in the Champion Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a successful broodmare.

Zee Zee Top is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She did not race until the autumn of her three-year-old season when she won a minor race on her debut and then finished second in the Severals Stakes. In the following year she showed top-class form to win the Middleton Stakes and Prix de l'Opéra as well as being placed in the Pretty Polly Stakes and Nassau Stakes. As a broodmare she produced Izzi Top and Jazzi Top.

Nahrain is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Unraced as a two-year-old she won her first four races in 2011 including the Coral Distaff and the Prix de l'Opéra before finishind second in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. She struggled to find her form in the early part of the 2012 season but returned to her best to take the Flower Bowl Stakes. She made an immediate impact as a broodmare, with her first foal being Benbatl.
