Nasarawa State is a state in the North Central region of Nigeria, bordered to the east by the states of Taraba and Plateau, to the north by Kaduna State, to the south by the states of Benue and Kogi, and to the west by the Federal Capital Territory. Named for the historic Nasarawa Emirate, the state was formed from the west of Plateau State on 1 October 1996. The state has thirteen local government areas and its capital is Lafia, located in the east of the state, while a key economic centre of the state is the Karu Urban Area—suburbs of Abuja—along the western border with the FCT.
The African University of Science and Technology (AUST) is an international undergraduate and post-graduate university located in Abuja, Nigeria. It was founded in 2007 as the first part of a pan-African university system concept developed by the Nelson Mandela Institution (NMI). The university offers postgraduate programs in five major disciplinary areas: Computer Science and Management of Information Technology, Material Science and Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Pure, Applied Mathematics, and Space and Aerospace Sciences, and also a master's degree in Public Administration and Public Policy. Visiting professors include Africans working in the diaspora.

Kogi State Polytechnic was established in 1993, and is located in Lokoja, Kogi State, Nigeria. It is owned and operated by Kogi State. As of 2007 it was accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to give certificates in Art and printing, Business, Engineering, Finance and Science Computing at the National Diploma and Higher National Diploma levels. In December 2009 the polytechnic presented 16 programs for accreditation to a visiting team of NBTE officials, mainly for the new schools of Engineering and Environmental Technology, Applied Science and Management Studies. The Rector said the school had to be able to offer core engineering and technology programs in order to fulfill its mandate.

Nigeria Polytechnic Games Association, often stylized as NIPOGA Games, is a biennial sporting competition involving all accredited polytechnics and colleges of technology in Nigeria. In 2017, the Minister for Sports, Solomon Dalung, was accorded as patron for the games, which saw 81 polytechnics participate in it. According to the organizers, the games were created to ensure peaceful co-existence among Nigerians and to discover and nurture sporting talents for national assignments. Yaba College of Technology is the most successful institution in the competition, having won the most gold medals on seven occasions, the latest being in 2014.
