The Fiji Pro 2016 was an event of the World Surf League for 2016 World Surf League.

The Fiji Pro was an event on the WSL Championship Tour. The event was held every year at Namotu in Tavarua, Fiji until 2017.

World Surf League Governing body for professional surfers

The World Surf League (WSL) is the governing body for professional surfers and is dedicated to showcasing the world's best talent in a variety of progressive formats. The World Surf League was previously known as the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) from 1983 to 2014. The organization was founded in 1976 by Fred Hemmings and Randy Rarick.

2016 World Surf League sporting competition event

The 2016 World Surf League World Championship Tour (WCT) is a professional competitive surfing league run by the World Surf League. Men and women compete in separate tours with events taking place from late February to mid-December, at various surfing locations around the world. Surfers receive points for their best events. The surfer with the most points at the end of the tour is announced the 2016 World Surf League Surfing World Champion.

This event was held from 07 to 19 June at Namotu, (Tavarua, Fiji) and opposed by 36 surfers.

Namotu Island is one of the few hundreds of islands that make up the country of Fiji. It is in the southernmost part of the chain of islands called the Mamanuca Islands, which are just west of Nadi. Namotu is located just off the southwestern coast of the main island of Fiji known as Viti Levu. Namotu Island Resort, a haven for tourists, lies about five nautical miles west of Viti Levu.

Tavarua island in Fiji

Tavarua is a heart-shaped island resort in Fiji. It has an area of 29 acres (120,000 m2). The island is close to the main Fijian island, Viti Levu, and is surrounded by a coral reef.

The tournament was won by Gabriel Medina (BRA), who beat Matt Wilkinson (AUS) in final.

Gabriel Medina Brazilian surfer

Gabriel Medina Pinto Ferreira is a Brazilian professional surfer, also the 2014 and 2018 WSL World Champion. Medina joined the world's elite of the World Surf League Tour in 2011, and in his rookie year he finished within the top 12 of the ASP World Tour at the age of 17. In March 2014 he won the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast. Media sources credit him as being the second person to have executed a maneuver called the "Backflip". Medina also became the first person ever to land this move in competition.

By the time she was 14, she had won a surfing gold medal as a member of the U.S. Team in the X Games. Johanne Defay French surfer

Johanne Defay is a French professional surfer. She was born in Le Puy-en-Velay, Auvergne, France. She began surfing at the age of 8 off the beaches of Reunion Island, which is her home today. After Johanne's first competition when she was only ten years old, she quickly moved through the European amateur ranks to eventually take on the WSL World Qualifying Series. In 2008 she almost gave up competing. Finding it difficult to step up from the juniors to the WQS and then when the economy crashed sending surf companies pulling sponsorships, Johanne found herself without sponsors and without decent results. With her parents’ encouragement Johanne was able to qualify for the WCT within two years.

The event was first founded in 2009 as Rip Curl Search Portugal. The defending champion is the Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina who won the event in 2017.
