Tianjin People's Hospital (formerly Mackenzie Memorial Hospital and Tientsin Mission Hospital and Dispensary) is a hospital in Tianjin, China. Prior to the Chinese Communist Revolution, it was known as Mackenzie Memorial Hospital. Olympian Eric Liddell was born there in 1902. [1]

History

Tianjin People's Hospital was originally founded as the Tientsin Mission Hospital and Dispensary by Dr. John Kenneth Mackenzie of the London Missionary Society in 1880. [2] Following his death, Mackenzie was succeeded by Dr. Fred C. Roberts, who led the hospital from 1888 until his death in 1894. [3]

On December 4, 2024, Nankai University, Tianjin University, and the Tianjin Municipal Health Commission held a signing ceremony [4] . The Tianjin Municipal Health Commission and Nankai University agreed to jointly develop Tianjin People's Hospital, designating it as a directly affiliated hospital of Nankai University and officially naming it the First Affiliated Hospital of Nankai University.

John Kenneth MacKenzie was an English medical missionary to China. He initially started his work through the London Missionary Society in Hankou (Hankow) in 1875. In Hankou, he treated patients in the London Missionary Society hospital, learned Chinese, and engaged in evangelism. The majority of the cases he treated were eye disease, opium addiction, and cases involving surgery. In 1878, MacKenzie transferred to Tianjin (Tientsin) due to the failing health of his wife. In Tianjin, MacKenzie constructed and ran a hospital with the help of the Viceroy's patronage and also established the Tientsin Medical School. MacKenzie also helped in the organisation of the Medical Missionary Association in China and the editing of the Medical Missionary Journal. He employed evangelism in many parts of his work but died an early death in 1888 due to smallpox.

Isabella Fisher Hospital was located in Tianjin, China. Built in 1881 and opened in 1882, it was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church (South).

Frederick Charles Roberts was an English physician and medical missionary who served with the London Missionary Society in Mongolia and China. Roberts spent his entire career as a practicing physician in East Asia, dying in China after seven years of mission work. He is best known for his contributions as the sole medical provider and second director at the Tientsin Mission Hospital and Dispensary in China, where he treated an estimated 120-150 patients a day, and for his famine relief efforts in the rural districts outside Tientsin. He also taught at the first Western medical school in China and is the namesake of Roberts Memorial Hospital, which was established in T'sangchou, China in 1903.

It is located at No. 1 Zhongshan Road, Hebei District, Tianjin, southwest of Tianjin North Station. Institute of Hematology and Blood Diseases Hospital, CAMS & PUMC, operates under a single administrative structure with two official names. It is located at No. 288 Nanjing Road, Heping District, Tianjin. The hospital was founded in November 1957 by Professor Deng Jiadong, the pioneer of hematology in China. In the 1970s, the institution was relocated to Sichuan but returned to Tianjin in 1982. It remains the only tertiary specialized hospital for hematological diseases in China.

Tianjin Third Central Hospital, also known as Nankai University Clinical Hospital, is located at 83 Jintang Road, Hedong District, Tianjin, People's Republic of China. It was originally established in 1957 as Hedong Hospital of Tianjin. In 1987, it was renamed Hedong Hospital Affiliated to Tianjin Second Medical College. In 1992, the hospital was officially renamed "Tianjin Third Central Hospital," and in 1993, it was recognized as a comprehensive Grade 3A hospital. The Tianjin Municipal Supervisory Commission, or Supervisory Commission of Tianjin Municipal, Tianjin Supervisory Commission is a provincial-level local state supervisory authority in Tianjin, co-located with the Disciplinary Inspection Committee of the Tianjin Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. It is a Class III A hospital featuring the integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine, affiliated to the Tianjin Municipal Health Commission.

Tianjin Second People's Hospital, formerly known as Tianjin Infectious Disease Hospital, was founded in 1920. It is located on the west side of Jinhe River, No. 75 Sudi Road, Nankai District, Tianjin, People's Republic of China. It is a Class-A tertiary specialized hospital with the specialty of "infectious diseases". It is also one of the largest Class-A tertiary specialized hospitals for infectious diseases in the country.
