North Macedonia competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, from 13 to 29 August 2004. This was the nation's third consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics in the post-Yugoslav era.
The North Macedonia men's national basketball team represents North Macedonia in international basketball and is controlled by the Basketball Federation of North Macedonia. They joined FIBA in 1993, after they gained independence from Yugoslavia. That same year the national team played their first official match against Estonia. Prior to 1993, Macedonian players took part on the Yugoslavia national team.

Macedonian Republic League was transformed in to top division level Macedonian Basketball First League. After the transformation teams from the higher level federal Leagues joined the Macedonian First League.

RK Vardar and RK Metalurg are two main male handball teams. RK Vardar are the Men's EHF Champions League 2017 Champions, and MZT Skopje and Rabotnički are best in basketball.
The Biljanini Izvori Sports Hall is a multi-functional indoor sports arena. It is located in Ohrid, North Macedonia. The sports hall was inaugurated in August 1998 and has a capacity of 4,000 seats for handball and 4,500 for basketball. It is used by several handball and basketball teams from Ohrid. It was one of two venues used during the 2008 European Women's Handball Championship.
