Flying Wig is the eleventh studio album by Venezuelan-American musician Devendra Banhart. It was released on September 22, 2023, as his label debut on Mexican Summer.
For the album, Banhart partnered with Welsh musician and producer Cate Le Bon, who produced the project. [1] Of the collaboration, Banhart said that he only wanted to make this album with Le Bon. In order "to draw out and emphasize the emotional aspect of a synthesizer", Flying Wig explores a more "synth"-oriented sound. [2] Banhart wanted a record that is set apart from his previous works, only feasible with a new "creative partner" on his side. Inspiration was drawn from a poem by Kobayashi Issa, which Banhart thought highlights a person's "ability to face despair with hope, to keep on failing and loving". [3] Recording took place in a cabin studio in Topanga. [4] During most of the writing and recording sessions, Banhart wore a dress gifted by Le Bon and pearls from his grandmother. He wanted to tap into his "feminine side" which feels powerful, yet "safe and comfortable" to him. In his view, the album reflects that "searching for a safe feeling". Banhart and Le Bon mostly worked with a tight circle of trusted collaborators for the album, with mixing and engineering handled by Samur Khouja and mastering by Heba Kadry. [5]
Banhart announced the album and shared the lead single "Twin" on June 13, 2023. [6] A second single "Sirens" was released on July 27 and explores "the sensual side of sorrow, the mournful side of joy", accompanied by a Sci-Fi-inspired video in collaboration with Christian Stavros and Joseph Wasilewski. [7] His first album in four years, following Ma (2019), it marks his first release since signing with Mexican Summer. [8] In promotion of the album, the musician will tour through North America and Europe in late 2023. [7]

Flying Wig received a score of 74 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic based on six critics' reviews, indicating "generally favorable" reception. [9] Uncut stated that "the antic hippie of Banhart's early work is long gone on this depressed but not despairing record, warmed by the melancholy, spacy hush of his voice over drifting synths and the bass's heartbeat pulse", [12] while Mojo called it "intimate, ambitious and just occasionally misfiring". [10]

Fabrizio Moretti also known as Fab, is a Brazilian-American musician and visual artist best known as the drummer for American rock band The Strokes, with whom he has released six studio albums since 2001. A collaborative artist, he has been part of a series of groups since the mid-2000s, most notably the Brazilian-American band Little Joy, which released one album in 2008, and the experimental pop collective Machinegum, which he has led since 2018. Throughout his career, Moretti has worked on a variety of art projects which span the mediums of drawing, sculpture, and installation and performance art.
Devendra Obi Banhart is an American-Venezuelan singer-songwriter and visual artist. Banhart was born in Texas, and raised in Venezuela and California. In 2000, he dropped out of the San Francisco Art Institute to pursue a musical career. In 2002, Banhart released his debut album and is best known for his albums in the late 2000s such as Cripple Crow and Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon. He has since expanded his career to incorporate his interest and training in the visual arts.
Nicholas Valensi is an American musician, best known for his role as lead and rhythm guitarist in the American rock band The Strokes. Since 2001, the band has released six studio albums, some of which Valensi has also contributed keyboard and backing vocals to. In 2013, he founded the band CRX, for which he acts as singer, songwriter, and lead and rhythm guitarist. Their debut album, New Skin, was released in 2016, and was followed by the 2019 album Peek. Valensi has also worked as a songwriter and session guitarist with various artists, including Sia, Regina Spektor and Kate Pierson.
Psychedelic folk is a loosely defined form of psychedelia that originated in the 1960s. It retains the largely acoustic instrumentation of folk, but adds musical elements common to psychedelic music.
Jennifer Vashti Bunyan is an English singer-songwriter. She began her career in the mid-1960s and released a debut album, Just Another Diamond Day, in 1970. Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon is a Devendra Banhart album released September 25, 2007. This album features more instrumentation than the previous records, as well as more genre experimentation. Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon was recorded in Topanga Canyon in Southern California and is dedicated to Alice Coltrane, Malachi Ritscher and Elliott Smith.
Cate Le Bon is a Welsh musician, songwriter and record producer. She sings in both English and Welsh. She has released six solo studio albums, to date, and is one half of the experimental music duo DRINKS with her partner Tim Presley. Her stage name is a tribute to English musician Simon Le Bon.
Gregory Samuel Rogove is an American indie music drummer and songwriter. He is notable for partnering with indie artist Devendra Banhart to form the group Megapuss. He signed a record contract with Knitting Factory Records in 2011.

Mug Museum is the third studio album by Welsh musician Cate Le Bon, released on 12 November 2013 by Turnstile Music and Wichita Recordings. It was produced by Noah Georgeson and Josiah Steinbrick and was recorded in Los Angeles shortly after Le Bon had relocated there from Wales. The album was generally praised by critics for its understated musical arrangements and lyrical content based on the theme of relationships, which was partially inspired by the recent death of Le Bon's grandmother. The album was written, produced, arranged, and recorded in Los Angeles by the singer/songwriter/guitarist with his longtime collaborators Noah Georgeson and Josiah Steinbrick, both of whom also worked on Banhart's previous album, Mala (2013).
