The city is built around a 65-acre (26 ha) hillock called Thekkinkadu Maidanam which seats the Vadakkunnathan temple. Government Medical College Thrissur is a government medical school situated in the city of Thrissur in the Indian state of Kerala.

The 2008–09 I-League season began on 26 September 2008 and finished on 16 April 2009 with a break in December for the Federation Cup and Durand Cup. Most games this season were played on Saturday's and Sunday's to attract larger crowds. After a successful first season for the I League, the second season featured 12 teams from four cities – again this would be expanded in the 2009–10 season to 14 teams.

The 1999–2000 Santosh Trophy was the 56th edition of the Santosh Trophy, the main State competition for football in India. It was held from 9 to 23 April 2000 in Thrissur and Chalakudy, Kerala. Twenty-eight teams from all over the country were supposed to take part in the national state championships, but six pulled out. Maharashtra beat the home team of Kerala 1–0 in the final.

Government Law College Thrissur, also known as Thrissur Law College, is situated in Ayyanthole. It is the fourth Government law college in Kerala and is owned by the Government of Kerala and affiliated to University of Calicut. The college caters to the needs of Thrissur District, Palakkad District and Malappuram District of Kerala. The College was started in the year 1992. Approved by Bar Council of India (BCI), New Delhi, the college offers three-year undergraduate and five-year integrated programs in the field of law and postgraduate degree also. The first batch of Law Graduates came out in 1993-94 academic year.

The 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup was the twentieth edition of the FIFA U-20 World Cup since its inception in 1977 as the FIFA World Youth Championship. The competition took place for the first time in New Zealand, the third time on Oceanian soil after Australia staged the 1981 and 1993 editions. A total of 52 matches were played in seven host cities.

The 2005–06 Santosh Trophy was the 60th edition of the Santosh Trophy. The tournament was held from 4 to 21 November 2005 in Kerala.

The 2015–16 UEFA Europa League qualifying phase began on 30 June and ended on 6 August 2015. A total of 157 teams competed in the qualifying phase to decide which 44 teams would participate in the play-off round of the 2015–16 UEFA Europa League, the final round before the group stage.

The 2015–16 Greek Football Cup was the 74th edition of the Greek Football Cup. A total of 34 clubs were accepted to enter. The competition commenced on 9 September 2015 with the preliminary round and was planned to conclude on 23 April 2016 with the final, at the Olympic Stadium.

Calicut Medical College Stadium is a football stadium in the city of Kozhikode in Kerala. Council Kozhikode District Sports Council and Kozhikode Corporation had constructed the stadium for 35th National Games. The stadium hosted football matches along with EMS Stadium.
