The Fowler Islands ( 66°25′S66°26′W / 66.417°S 66.433°W ) are a group of small islands lying between the Bernal Islands and the Bragg Islands in Crystal Sound, off the coast of Antarctica. They were mapped from air photos obtained by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947–48) and the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition (1956–57), and from surveys by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (1958–59). They were named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Sir Ralph H. Fowler (1889–1944), [1] an English physicist, joint author with J.D. Bernal of a classic paper in 1933 on the structure of ice which suggested the location of the hydrogen atoms [2] now known as the ice rules.
Martin Glacier is a glacier, 3 nautical miles (6 km) wide and 9 nautical miles (17 km) long, which flows west and then northwest from the south side of Mount Lupa to the southeast corner of Rymill Bay where it joins Bertrand Ice Piedmont, on the west coast of Graham Land, Antarctica. It was first surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) under John Riddoch Rymill, and was resurveyed in 1948–1949 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey. The glacier was named for James Hamilton Martin, a member of the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (1929–1931) under Sir Douglas Mawson, and first mate of the Penola during the BGLE.
The Trojan Range is a mountain range rising to 2,760 metres (9,055 ft), extending northward from Mount Francais along the east side of Iliad Glacier, Anvers Island, in the Palmer Archipelago of the British Antarctic Territory. It was surveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1955 and named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for the Trojans, one of the opposing sides in the Trojan War in Homer's Iliad.
Cape Longing is a rocky cape on the east coast of Graham Land, Antarctica, forming the south end of a large ice-covered promontory which marks the west side of the south entrance to Prince Gustav Channel. It was discovered by the Swedish Antarctic Expedition under Otto Nordenskiöld in 1902, and so named by him because from the position of his winter hut on Snow Hill Island the cape lay in the direction of his "land of longing" which he was anxious to explore.
The Airy Glacier is a glacier 20 nautical miles (37 km) long and 6 nautical miles (11 km) wide, flowing west to the northeast portion of Forster Ice Piedmont, near the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.
Irving Island is a small island at the northeastern end of the Barcroft Islands, in the Biscoe Islands, Antarctica. It is situated 1.18 km east of St. Brigid Island and 1.9 km north of St. Isidore Island. The island was mapped from air photos taken by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition (1956–57), and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Laurence Irving, an American physiologist who has specialized in the effects of a polar environment.
Adie Inlet is an ice-filled inlet, 25 miles (40 km) long in a northwest–southeast direction, lying east of Churchill Peninsula along the east coast of Graham Land. Charted by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) and photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE) during 1947. Named by the FIDS for R.J. Adie, South African geologist with FIDS, 1947–49.
Flask Glacier, is a gently-sloping glacier, 25 nautical miles long, flowing east from Bruce Plateau to enter Scar Inlet between Daggoo Peak and Spouter Peak in Graham Land, Antarctica. The lower reaches of this glacier were surveyed and photographed by the Falklands Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1947. The entire glacier was photographed by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition in 1955–56, and mapped by the FIDS in 1957. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-names Committee after the third mate on the Pequod in Herman Melville's Moby-Dick; or, The White Whale.
Wollan Island is a dome-shaped, ice-capped island with conspicuous rock exposures on its northwest side, lying 1 nautical mile (1.9 km) north of Davidson Island in Crystal Sound. Mapped from surveys by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) (1958–59). Named by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for Ernest O. Wollan, American physicist who used neutron diffraction to study the structure of ice.
The Bernal Islands are a group of four mainly snow-covered islands and a number of rocks lying in Crystal Sound, about 19 km (10 nmi) east of the south end of Lavoisier Island, Biscoe Islands. They were mapped from surveys by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (1958–59) and from air photos obtained by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947–48), and named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for John D. Bernal, a British physicist, joint author with Sir Ralph Fowler of a classic 1933 paper on the structure of ice which suggested the location of the hydrogen atoms, known as the ice rules.
Blériot Glacier is a short, but wide, glacier lying east of Salvesen Cove and Zimzelen Glacier and southwest of Cayley Glacier on Danco Coast, Graham Land in Antarctica. Photographed by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition in 1956–57, and mapped from these photos by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, it was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1960 for Louis Blériot (1872–1936), a French aviator who in 1907 flew the first full-size powered monoplane, and who made the first flight across the English Channel in July 1909.
Blümcke Knoll is a small steep-sided feature protruding through the ice of northern Adelaide Island, off the Antarctic Peninsula. It is about 11 nautical miles (20 km) southwest of Mount Velain.
Davidson Island is a small, dome-shaped ice-covered island between Wollan Island and Shull Rocks in Crystal Sound. It was mapped from air photos obtained by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947–48) and the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition (1958–59) and from surveys by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (1958–59). It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for William L. Davidson, an American physicist who used neutron diffraction to determine the position of the hydrogen atoms in ice.
Gibbs Glacier is a glacier, 15 nautical miles (28 km) long, flowing southeast into the northern part of Mercator Ice Piedmont on the east side of the Antarctic Peninsula. This feature together with Neny Glacier, which flows northwest, occupy a transverse depression between Mercator Ice Piedmont and Neny Fjord on the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula. Gibbs Glacier was photographed from the air and first mapped by the United States Antarctic Service, 1939–41, and the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Peter M. Gibbs of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, a surveyor at Horseshoe Island, 1957, and leader at Stonington Island, 1958, who was responsible for the first ground survey of the glacier.
Hariot Glacier is a glacier flowing northwest along the south side of Morgan Upland before turning west into the northern portion of the Wordie Ice Shelf, along the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was roughly surveyed by the British Graham Land Expedition, 1936–37, and the upper reaches were photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947. The glacier was surveyed from the ground by members of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey who travelled along it in December 1958, and it was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Thomas Hariot, an English mathematician who pioneered new methods of navigation under the patronage of Sir Walter Raleigh.
Steinemann Island is an island off the northeast coast of Adelaide Island, about 10 nautical miles (18 km) southwest of Mount Velain. Mapped from air photos taken by Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE) (1947–48) and Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition (FIDASE) (1956–57). Named by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for Samuel Steinemann, Swiss physicist who has made laboratory investigations on the flow of single and polycrystalline ice.
Rigsby Islands is a small group of ice-capped islands lying off the northeast coast of Adelaide Island, about 2 nautical miles (3.7 km) south of Sillard Islands. Mapped from air photos taken by Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE) (1947–48) and Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition (FIDASE) (1956–57). Named by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for George P. Rigsby, American geologist who has specialized in the investigation of ice crystal structure and the plasticity of ice.
Levy Island is an isolated snow-covered island in Crystal Sound, Antarctica, about 14 km (7.5 nmi) east of Gagge Point, Lavoisier Island. It was mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947–48) and surveys by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (1958–59). The island was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Henri A. Levy, an American physical chemist who, with S.W. Peterson, determined the location of the hydrogen atoms in ice by neutron diffraction, in 1957.
McLeod Hill is a rounded, ice-covered hill of elevation 1,790 m in the south part of Hemimont Plateau in Graham Land, Antarctica, which forms a prominent landmark 1 mi east of the head of Northeast Glacier. It was first roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE), and resurveyed by the U.S. Antarctic Service (USAS), 1939–41. It was resurveyed in 1946 by the Falklands Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) and named for Kenneth A. McLeod, Falklands Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) meteorological observer who, during July-December 1947, occupied with a member of the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE) the plateau meteorological station 1 mi east of this hill.
Mount Odin is a saddle-top mountain on the Foyn Coast of Graham Land, Antarctica. It consists of two ice-covered peaks and stands 1,465 m (4,806 ft) tall. It is situated close to Frigga Peak to the southwest, on the divide between Anderson Glacier and Sleipnir Glacier. In 1947, the peak was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE) and charted from the ground by the Falklands Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS). It was named by FIDS personnel after the Norse god Odin, the mythological husband of Frigga.
