A post office called Fox Ridge was established in 1911, and remained in operation until 1940. [2] The town had the name of Fox, an Indian outlaw who was killed at a nearby ridge. [3]
Meade County is located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 25,434. Its county seat is Sturgis. The county was created in 1889 and was named for Fort Meade, which was garrisoned as a United States military post in the area in 1878 and itself named for General George Meade.
