Frank Robert Kschischang [3] (born 15 September 1962) is a German-born Canadian electrical engineer and a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto, [4] and holds a Canada Research Chair in communication algorithms. [5]

Education and career

Kschischang was born in Mettmann of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany [1] and moved to Canada for his university education. He studied at the University of British Columbia, where he received his B.A.Sc. in 1985 and then at the University of Toronto, where he received his PhD in electrical engineering under the supervision of Subbarayan Pasupathy in 1991. [2] From the late 1990s till early 2000s, Kschischang and Brendan Frey co-invented factor graph, a kind of graphical model used in Bayesian inference. [6] [7]

Kschischang became a Fellow of the IEEE for his "contributions to trellis structures, graphical models and iterative decoding techniques for error-correcting codes." [8] [9] He is also a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, [10] and is a recipient of the 2010 Killam Research Fellowship. [11] He received the 2023 IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal, [12] the 2012 Canadian Award for Telecommunications Research, [13] and the 2016 Aaron D. Wyner Distinguished Service Award. [14] From 2014 to 2016, Kschischang served as Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory. [15]

Irving Stoy Reed was an American mathematician and engineer. He is best known for co-inventing a class of algebraic error-correcting and error-detecting codes known as Reed–Solomon codes in collaboration with Gustave Solomon. He also co-invented the Reed–Muller code.

Hamid Jafarkhani is an Iranian-born American electrical engineer and professor. He serves as the Chancellor's Professor in electrical engineering and computer science in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine. His research focuses on communications theory, particularly coding and wireless communications and networks.

Babak Hassibi is an Iranian-American electrical engineer, computer scientist, and applied mathematician who is the inaugural Mose and Lillian S. Bohn Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). From 2011 to 2016 he was the Gordon M Binder/Amgen Professor of Electrical Engineering. During 2008-2015 he was the Executive Officer of Electrical Engineering and Associate Director of Information Science and Technology.

Brendan John Frey FRSC is a Canadian computer scientist, entrepreneur, and engineer. He is Founder and CEO of Deep Genomics, Cofounder of the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Professor of Engineering and Medicine at the University of Toronto. Frey is a pioneer in the development of machine learning and artificial intelligence methods, their use in accurately determining the consequences of genetic mutations, and in designing medications that can slow, stop or reverse the progression of disease.

Alexander Vardy was a Russian-born and Israeli-educated electrical engineer known for his expertise in coding theory. He held the Jack Keil Wolf Endowed Chair in Electrical Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. The Parvaresh–Vardy codes are named after him.

Bruce Edward Hajek is a Professor in the Coordinated Science Laboratory, the head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Leonard C. and Mary Lou Hoeft Chair in Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign. He does research in communication networking, auction theory, stochastic analysis, combinatorial optimization, machine learning, information theory, and bioinformatics.

Robert Tienwen Chien was an American computer scientist concerned largely with research in information theory, fault-tolerance, and artificial intelligence (AI), director of the Coordinated Science Laboratory (CSL) at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, and known for his invention of the Chien search and seminal contributions to the PMC model in system level fault diagnosis.

Ranjan Kumar Mallik is an Indian electrical and communications engineer and a professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He held the Jai Gupta Chair at IIT Delhi from 2007 to 2012 and the Brigadier Bhopinder Singh Chair from 2012 to 2017. He is known for his researches on multiple-input multi-output systems and is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy, and The National Academy of Sciences, India. He is also an elected fellow of The World Academy of Sciences, Indian National Academy of Engineering, and The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Muriel Médard is an information theorist and electrical engineer. She is the Cecil H. Green Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and is known for her research in network coding.

Jeremiah F. Hayes was an award-winning North American professor of electrical engineering. In 1983, he was honored as an IEEE fellow for his first published book which was about computer communications. On that project, Hayes worked with Andrew Viterbi on combining Erlang (unit) with Shannon–Hartley theorem. He also co-authored a communications textbook entitled Digital Communications Principles with Stephen Weinstein and Richard D. Gitlin. He received the Canadian Award for Telecommunications Research in 1996, and was a senior editor of the Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (JSAC). His most noted work was subgroup polling. Jeremiah Francis Hayes was born on July 8, 1934, in New York NY, and died on May 8, 2018, in Victoria BC, Canada.

Salman A. Avestimehr is a Dean's professor at the Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Departments of University of Southern California, where he is the inaugural director of the USC-Amazon Center for Secure and Trusted Machine Learning and the director of the Information Theory and Machine Learning (vITAL) research lab. He is also the CEO and Co-Founder of FedML. Avestimehr's contributions in research and publications are in the areas of information theory, machine learning, large-scale distributed computing, and secure/private computing and learning. In particular, he is best known for deterministic approximation approaches to network information theory and coded computing. He was a general co-chair of the 2020 International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT), and is a Fellow of IEEE. He is also co-authors of four books titled “An Approximation Approach to Network Information Theory”, “Multihop Wireless Networks: A Unified Approach to Relaying and Interference Management”, “Coded Computing”, and “Problem Solving Strategies for Elementary-School Math.”

Mark McMahon Wilde is an American quantum information scientist. He is an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cornell University, and he is also a Fields Member in the School of Applied and Engineering Physics and the Department of Computer Science at Cornell.

Can Emre Koksal is an electrical engineer, computer scientist, academic, and entrepreneur. He is the Founder and CEO of Datanchor, and a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ohio State University.

Subbarayan Pasupathy was a Canadian electrical engineer and a professor emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Toronto. He also served as the Chairman of the Communications Group and as the Associate Chairman of the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Toronto.
