He was a senior lecturer at Enugu State University of Technology and served as commissioner for education in Ebonyi state contributed to the successes recorded in education sector during his tenure as governor.

Elechi ran successfully for re-election on 26 April 2011. In 2017 Elechi left the People Democratic Party (PDP) for All Progressives Congress (APC). He left as a result of the Impunity,corruption,an absence of respect for freedom,and a lack of public opinion sensitivity that plagued the Party.

Speaker of the House of Assembly Francis Nwifuru held the office for the APC by a margin of 35% over first runner-up and PDP nominee —businessman Ifeanyi Odii.
