Ebonyi State is a state in the South-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria,bordered to the north and northeast by Benue State,Enugu State to the west,Cross River State to the east and southeast,and Abia State to the southwest. Sam Ominyi Egwu is a Nigerian politician and member of People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Nigeria. Dr Egwu is noted as pillar of educational development in Ebonyi state and Nigeria. He attended the University of Nigeria,Nsukka where he obtained a bachelor's degree in Agricultural in 1981. He later received a master's degrees in Agricultural from the University of Nigeria,Nsukka in 1987 and Doctorate in Agronomy from Enugu State University of Technology in 1996. He was a senior lecturer at Enugu State University of Technology and served as commissioner for education in Ebonyi state contributed to the successes recorded in education sector during his tenure as governor.
Sule Lamido was born on served as Foreign Affairs Minister of Nigeria from 1999 to 2003. He was elected governor of Jigawa State in April 2007. He is a member of the former ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He ran successfully for reelection on 26 April 2011. In 2015 he and his sons were put on trial for embezzling state fund by the EFCC.
Martin Elechi is a Nigerian economist and politician. He served as the Governor of Ebonyi State from 2007 to 2015. Four years after losing his Bakura/Maradun Constituency seat in 2015,Matawalle became the 2019 PDP gubernatorial nominee and won the office after a Supreme Court ruling disqualified the original winner. In 2021,he defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress after a defection rally in Gusau alongside most Zamfara State elected officials.

The 2023 Ebonyi State gubernatorial election will take place on 11 March 2023,to elect the Governor of Ebonyi State,concurrent with elections to the Ebonyi State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election will be held two weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Dave Umahi is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term.
