"Freaks Like You" is a song by the American rock band, Something Clever. It was officially released as a single independently on December 3, 2013. [1] The song is the first release with new lead singer Adam Nelson after original vocalist Michael Brennan departed the band in May 2013. "Freaks Like You" also served as the lead single from the band's second EP, Season of Darkness . [2]
In May 2013, Something Clever announced the departure of their original lead vocalist, Michael Brennan, and soon began auditions for a replacement. On July 13, 2013, the band introduced Adam Nelson as their new lead singer, along with Colt Crevar as bassist, marking a significant lineup change. [3]
After spending much of the year searching for new bandmates and writing and recording new music with the new lineup, it was announced on November 20, 2013, Something Clever announced the release of "Freaks Like You," their first single featuring Nelson and Crevar, which officially debuted on December 3, 2013. This release signified the start of a new era for the band and was also the final recording to feature original rhythm guitarist Christopher St. Hilaire before his departure in May 2014. [4]
In early 2019 Something Clever began posting questionnaires online as to whether fans would like to hear newly recorded versions of their earlier hits like "Freaks Like You" as bonus tracks on their then-upcoming new EP. [5] On February 1, 2019, the band released part one of a two-EP series titled Moments: Red and Moments: Blue. The latter, released on March 1, 2019, ended up featuring a newly re-recorded version of "Freaks Like You" titled, "Freaks Like You 2.0." This updated version showcased the band's then-current lineup and production style, blending metalcore and emo influences. [6]
Following the release of "Freaks Like You," the band focused on writing and recording material for their second EP, which would eventually be titled Season of Darkness, the band spent much of 2014 providing tour support for national acts such as Puddle of Mudd, Tantric, Saving Abel, The Dead Rabbits, Saliva, A Course of Action, and Carolina Rebellion. [17] The band wrapped up 2014 continuing work on their new EP, "Freaks Like You" ended up being the first of the two promotional singles featured on Season of Darkness, which officially released on March 17, 2015. [18]
"Freaks Like You" received significant airplay on CBS Radio, Valley FM 89.5, and 106.5 The End. [19] [20] [21] The single also gained traction on streaming platforms, appearing on various "Top Rock Songs" playlists on both Spotify and iTunes following its releases in 2013 and 2019. [22]
