Major General Fredrick Mugisha, commonly referred to as Fred Mugisha, is a senior military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Force and assumed command over AMISOM as the fourth commander on 15 June 2011. [1] [2]
Mugisha was born in 1963 in Western Uganda. [3] In his youth, he joined the National Resistance Army, the armed wing of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) rebel movement which took part in the Ugandan Bush War. He rose to become an officer in the NRA's Mobile Brigade, serving under Salim Saleh. In 1985, Mugisha fought in the Battle of Kembogo. [4] [5] In early 1986, he was one of the officers who planned the NRA's assault on the Ugandan capital Kampala. [6] In the Battle of Kampala of 17–26 January 1986, Mugisha initially led the frontline NRA troops after his superior Pecos Kutesa allegedly fell ill. [7] As the rebels advanced deeper into the city, he continued to fight alongside his troops, reportedly displaying considerable bravery under fire. [8]
After the NRM/NRA's victory in the Ugandan Bush War, Mugisha continued to serve in the new Ugandan national military. From 1987 to May 1988, he served as Communications Officer of a Battalion at the rank of APC. He attended the Officer Cadet Course at Simferopol Academy in the former Soviet Union, from 1988 to 1989. From 1990 to 1995, Mugisha served as Security and Combat Intelligence Officer at the rank of lieutenant. From 1995 to 1997, he served as Second in Command of Artillery and Air Defense at the rank of captain. He then attended the Convoy Commander Course at Monduli Military Academy in Tanzania, in 1997. From 1997 to 1998, Mugisha was the Intelligence and Security Officer of an Army Division at the rank of major. From 1999 to 2000, he was the Division Intelligence and Security Officer at the rank of major. In 2000, he attended the Platoon Commander Course at the Sierra Vista Military Academy in Arizona, United States of America. [3]
From 2000 to 2001, Mugisha served as Director Combat Intelligence and Security at the rank of major. From March 2001 to December 2001, he was Deputy Chief of Military Intelligence and Security at the rank of lieutenant colonel. From 2002 to 2004, he was Division Operations and Training Officer at an artillery division, at the rank of colonel. From 2003 until 2004, he attended the Army High Command Course at Nanjing Army Command College in China. He then attended the Africa Strategic Course at Nasser Military Academy in Egypt, in 2005. The next year, in 2006, he attended the Senior Command and Staff Course at the Army War College at Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, India, in 2006. In 2008, he attended the National Defense College, in South Africa. From 2005 to 2011, he was also the commander of the artillery division, stationed at Masindi, at the rank of brigadier. [3]
He was promoted from brigadier to major general and appointed commander of AMISOM in August 2011. In this role, he was posted to Mogadishu, Somalia. [3] [9] He served in this position until 2012, when he became Joint Chief of Staff of the Uganda People's Defence Forces. [3]
From May 2013, he was replaced as Joint Chief of Staff by Major General Wilson Mbadi and assigned to the position of commandant of the newly established "National Counter Terrorism Center". [3] [10] [11]
The Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF), previously known as the National Resistance Army, is the armed forces of Uganda. From 2007 to 2011, the International Institute for Strategic Studies estimated the UPDF had a total strength of 40,000–45,000, consisting of land forces and an air wing. Recruitment to the forces is done annually.
The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) was a Multinational force formed by the African Union. The operation deployed to Somalia soon after the Islamic Courts Union was deposed by troops from Ethiopia during a large scale invasion in late 2006. The missions primary objective was to maintain the regime change between the ICU and the newly installed Transitional Federal Government, implement a national security plan and train the TFG security forces. As part of its duties, AMISOM later supported the Federal Government of Somalia in its war against Al-Shabaab. AMISOM was the most deadly peacekeeping operation in the post-war era.
Gregory Mugisha Muntuyera, commonly referred to as Mugisha Muntu, is a Ugandan politician and retired military officer. He is the current president of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), a political party he founded in March 2019. He previously served as the President of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), an opposition political party, from 2012 to 2017. In September 2018, General Muntu parted ways with the FDC citing ideological differences with the new FDC leadership of Hon. Patrick Oboi Amuriat. On 27 September 2018 he announced in a televised press conference that he and some other leaders had begun what he called the New Formation which later became the ANT.
Muhoozi Kainerugaba is a Ugandan military officer. He is the son of President Yoweri Museveni and currently serves as the Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). He is also the chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda, a pressure group lobbying for his presidency.

Major General Nathan Mugisha is a military officer in Uganda People's Defence Force. He is the current Deputy Ambassador of Uganda to Somalia. He was appointed to that position in June 2011. Prior to that, he served as the Commander of the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM), June 2009 until June 2011, being the third military officer to serve in that capacity. Before taking the command of AMISOM he was commandant of the Uganda Senior Command and Staff College, at Kimaka, a suburb of Jinja.
Ivan Koreta is a Ugandan retired military officer, diplomat and legislator. He is a former General in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) and a representative for the armed forces in the Parliament of Uganda; where he serves as a member of the Public Accounts Committee and the Committee on Presidential Affairs.
General David Rubakuba Muhoozi is a Ugandan military officer and lawyer. Since 6 June 2021, he has been serving as the Minister of State for Internal Affairs, replacing Obiga Kania.
Lieutenant General Andrew Gutti is a Ugandan military officer. He was the chairman of the General Court Martial of the Uganda People's Defence Force until 3 August 2022, when he handed over office to Brigadier General Robert Freeman Mugabe. Gutti was appointed to that position in May 2016, replacing the late Major General Levi Karuhanga.
Lieutenant General Kayanja Muhanga is a Ugandan army officer, who currently serves as Commander of Land Forces in UPDF. He was appointed to that position in October 2022 by the President of Uganda and Commander in chief of the UPDF, Yoweri Museveni. He previously served as commander of the Uganda People's Defence Force contingent in Eastern DRC under Operation Shujaa. He was appointed to that position in January 2021 by Yoweri Museveni, the Commander in Chief of the UPDF and the President of Uganda. Prior to that, Maj. General Muhanga served as the commandant of the military police within the UPDF.
Major General Richard Prit Olum, commonly known as Dick Olum, is a military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). Effective 13 May 2024, he serves as commander of the "South Sudan Stabilization Mechanism", an observer force to ensure adherence to the peace agreements. Before that, he served as the Ugandan commander of the UPDF forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo under the joint Uganda/DRC mission code named Operation Shujaa. He simultaneously served as the commander of the UPDF Mountain Division, based in Fort Portal, Kabarole District at the base of the Rwenzori Mountains. His appointment was made on 12 October 2022.
Lieutenant General Samuel Kavuma, commonly known as Sam Kavuma, is a Ugandan senior military officer. Since March 2024, he has bene serving as the Commander of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). Before that, from 24 June 2021 until 24 March 2024, he was the deputy coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation, a presidential appointment by Yoweri Museveni Immediately before that position, he served as the deputy commander of the Uganda People's Defence Force Air Force. Before that, Kavuma served as the Commander of the Uganda People's Defence Force Contingent in Somalia, as part of the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM). He was appointed to that position in October 2014. He replaced Brigadier General Dick Olum, who served in that position from September 2013 until October 2014.
Major General Innocent Felix Oula is a senior army officer in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). As of March 2020, he serves as the Head of Civil Military Cooperation. He concurrently serves as one of the UPDF representatives to the Parliament of Uganda. He was elected to that position in January 2014, replacing renegade General David Sejusa, who was expelled from Parliament.
The Battle of Kampala was a battle of the Ugandan Bush War that took place from 17 to 26 January 1986 in which forces of the National Resistance Army (NRA) attacked and captured the Ugandan capital, Kampala, from the Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA). As a result, the Ugandan government was deposed and replaced by a new one under NRA leader Yoweri Museveni.
Major Christine Nyangoma, is a senior Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). She is the Commander of the UPDF Women’s Unit in Somalia, as part of the African Unions force, AMISOM.
Major General Don William Nabasa, is a Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). He currently serves as the Commander of the UPDF Military Police, effective 26 October 2021. Before that, he was the commander of the Uganda contingent in Somalia as part of AMISOM.

Paul L'Okech was a senior military officer at the rank of Lieutenant General in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF), who was appointed Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Uganda Police Force on 16 December 2020. Between November 2017 and December 2019, he served on special assignment "to monitor on behalf of the guarantors of the South Sudan peace process, the assembling, screening, demobilization and integration of the armed forces of South Sudan".
Brigadier General Francis Takirwa, is a Ugandan military officer who, effective December 2019, is the commanding officer of the Second Division of the Uganda People's Defence Forces, based in the city of Mbarara in the Western Region of Uganda.
Sam Magara was a Ugandan rebel, and one of the National Resistance Army (NRA)'s leading commanders during the early Ugandan Bush War. A long-time associate of NRA leader Yoweri Museveni, he became the latter's second-in-command in 1981 and assumed command of the NRA in his absence. However, he fell into disfavor after the NRA's internal security network alleged that he was planning to overthrow Museveni. Magara was eventually killed by security forces in Kampala in late 1982.
