History

The band's first EP was self-released as The Cassandra Complex in 2003. It was repackaged and re-released by Black Market Activities as Not One Word Has Been Omitted in 2004. In 2006, the band released Delenda , their first full-length album under Black Market Activities and distributed by Metal Blade. [1]

After releasing Delenda, the band toured throughout North America and Europe until the summer of 2007. Then they finished writing their second full-length album. Conversations was released May 27, 2008, again on Black Market Activities. They toured Europe in 2007, along with Walls of Jericho, Born from Pain, Fear My Thoughts, All Shall Perish, and Freya. On August 29, 2008, in a MySpace blog, the band announced that they had disbanded. [2]

On November 18, 2023, the band's current line-up reunited (along with former vocalist Sean Vandegrift for 'I Tried Voodoo Once'), [3] and played a reunion show [4] near their hometown at Westside Bowl in Youngstown, Ohio. Openers included Neighbor Dan, Nights Like These, and See You Next Tuesday. They are currently writing new material.

Musical style

The band's first two releases primarily featured a mix of progressive metal, mathcore, and deathcore, with AllMusic reviewer Stewart Mason referring to Delenda as "deeply schizoid." [5] Conversations features a more melodic progressive metalcore and post-hardcore sound, dropping most of the mathcore and deathcore influences from previous releases. [6] [7]

A number of heavy metal genres have developed since the emergence of heavy metal during the late 1960s and early 1970s. At times, heavy metal genres may overlap or are difficult to distinguish, but they can be identified by a number of traits. They may differ in terms of instrumentation, tempo, song structure, vocal style, lyrics, guitar playing style, drumming style, and so on.

Melodic death metal is a subgenre of death metal that employs highly melodic guitar riffs, often borrowing from traditional heavy metal. The genre features the heaviness of death metal but with highly melodic or harmonized guitar riffs and solos, and often features high-pitched shrieked vocals alongside the low-pitched growls commonly featured in traditional death metal. Pioneered by the English heavy metal band Carcass with their 1993 album Heartwork, melodic death metal developed further in Sweden in the mid-1990s. The Swedish death metal scene did much to popularise the style, soon centering in the "Gothenburg metal" scene. At the Gates' Slaughter of the Soul, Dark Tranquillity's The Gallery, and In Flames' The Jester Race, all released in the mid-1990s, were highly influential albums in melodic death metal, with At the Gates and In Flames being the two most common influences on North American 2000s heavy metal bands. Many American heavy metal bands emulated At the Gates' sound, resulting in the usage of the phrase "At the Gates worship".
