Gareth McGlynn (born 29 October 1982 in Inch, Donegal, Ireland) is a retired footballer who played for Derry City. [1]

Career

Ireland

McGlynn broke into the Derry side at the age of 17. He made his debut in April 2001 in a 1-0 home victory over Kilkenny City with his first goal for the club arriving 10 days later during a 3-3 draw with Shelbourne. That goal made him the 100th player ever to score for Derry in the League of Ireland. His 200th appearance was made during a game with Drogheda United at United Park towards the end of the 2006 season.[ citation needed ]

An Irish youth international, McGlynn can play on the right or in the centre of midfield. A talented ball player, he has battled his way back into the team and impressed Stephen Kenny sufficiently to warrant a run in the side. In September 2006, two semi-final goals from McGlynn against Limerick helped Derry win 3-0 and thus qualify for the final of the League of Ireland Cup. [2]

Gareth signed for Pat Fenlon's Bohemians in pre-season 2010 and scored his first goal for Bohemians against Drogheda United on 19 March 2010. [3]

In the close season of 2010, McGlynn was linked with a move to his former club Derry City. [4] McGlynn then re-signed for Derry City in January 2011.[ citation needed ]

Australia

He left Derry in December 2011 to go to Australia and signed for Stirling Lions in the Football West State League. [5]

America

After Australia he travelled to New York, making his debut in March 2014 with Lansdowne Bhoys FC. [6] He then went on to win two Cosmopolitan Soccer League titles in 2014 and 2015 with the Bhoys.

Back to Derry City

In 2016, he once again signed for Derry City on a one-year deal for his 3rd stint with the team. [7]

The 2008 FAI Cup Final was a football match held at the RDS, Dublin on 23 November 2008 and was the final match of the 2008 FAI Cup competition. The match was the 85th FAI Cup Final, and the second to be held at the RDS since Lansdowne Road shut for redevelopment. The final was contested by Bohemians and Derry City, with Bohemians winning 4–3 on penalties after extra time had finished 2–2. It was the first ever FAI Cup Final to be decided by a penalty shoot-out and it was the seventh time Bohemians had won the trophy, the victory granting them a league and cup double for the season. The FAI Cup Final, known recently as the FAI Ford Cup Final for sponsorship reasons, is an annual soccer match which is the last game in the Football Association of Ireland Challenge Cup. It is the culmination of a knock-out competition among clubs belonging to the Football Association of Ireland, generally competed for by clubs from the Republic of Ireland, although representatives from Northern Ireland have competed and even won the Cup. The 2012 FAI Senior Challenge Cup, also known as the 2012 FAI Ford Senior Cup, was the 92nd season of the national football competition of the Republic of Ireland. The winners of the competition earned spots in both the second qualifying round of the 2013-14 UEFA Europa League and the 2013 Setanta Sports Cup.

The 2005 FAI Cup Final was the final match of the 2005 FAI Cup. The final took place on 4 December 2005 at Lansdowne Road, Dublin in front of a crowd of 24,521 and a television audience which peaked at 285,000. This was the largest attendance at an FAI Cup Final since 1990. The match was originally due to take place at Tolka Park, Dublin however the match was moved to Lansdowne Road in order to accommodate a larger crowd. Drogheda United and Cork City contested the final. Drogheda United were generally seen as underdogs coming into the game but they successfully claimed their first major trophy by winning the match. It was Cork City's first appearance in the final since 1998. Drogheda United last contested the final in 1976. Live coverage of the match was provided on RTÉ Two and RTÉ Radio 1.
