Henry Highland Garnet was an American abolitionist, minister, educator and orator. Having escaped as a child from slavery in Maryland with his family, he grew up in New York City. He was educated at the African Free School and other institutions, and became an advocate of militant abolitionism. He became a minister and based his drive for abolitionism in religion.
Dara Grace Torres is an American former competitive swimmer, who is a 12-time Olympic medalist and former world record-holder in three events. Garnet Walter Ault was a Canadian competition swimmer and Olympic medallist. At the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, Ault competed in the 4×200-metre, 400-metre and 1500-metre freestyle events, and won a bronze medal in the relay; he finished sixth in the 1500-metre final, and did not advance past the preliminary heats in the 400-metre. The same year he set a Canadian record in the mile at 23:36.6.
Cynthia Lee Goyette, also known by her married name Cynthia McCulloch, is an American former competition swimmer, Olympic champion, and former world record-holder. She represented the United States as an 18-year-old at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. She won a gold medal for swimming the breaststroke leg for the first-place U.S. team in the women's 4 × 100-metre medley relay. The U.S. relay team set a new world record of 4:33.9 in the event final; Goyette's teammates included Cathy Ferguson (backstroke), Sharon Stouder (butterfly), and Kathy Ellis (freestyle).

Gambia took part in the 2008 Summer Olympics, held in Beijing, China from 8 to 24 August 2008. It was Gambia's seventh appearance in the summer Olympics since its debut in 1984. The Gambia team included three athletes; runners Suwaibou Sanneh and Fatou Tiyana as well as boxer Badou Jack. Jack, a middleweight at his first Olympics, was selected as flag bearer for both the opening and closing ceremonies. None of the Gambia athletes progressed further than the qualifying heats.

The country's participation at Beijing marked its eighth consecutive appearance in the summer Olympics since its debut in 1972, and its ninth Olympic appearance ever. Fabienne Feraez, a sprinter, was selected as the flag bearer for the opening ceremony. None of the Benin athletes progressed further than the heat round.

This marked the nation's eleventh appearance at the Summer Olympics since its debut in the 1964 Summer Olympics. The Chadian delegation included track and field athlete Hinikissia Ndikert and judoka Carine Ngarlemdana. Ngarlemdana was the flag bearer for the opening ceremony and Ndikert was the flag bearer for the closing ceremony. Neither of Chad's athletes progressed beyond the first round of their events. Chad was one of only two countries to have a female-only team at the 2012 games.

The 1909 Swarthmore Quakers football team was an American football team that represented Swarthmore College as an independent during the 1909 college football season. The team compiled a 2–5 record and was outscored by a total of 101 to 84. George H. Brooke was the head coach.
