The Garo National Council is a political party in Meghalaya in northeastern India which campaigns for the creation a new Indian state to be called Garoland, for the people of the Garo Hills.

Founded in February 1946 as the Garo National Conference, Moody K Marak was the first President. In 1948 the organisation was renamed the Garo National Council. [2] [3] The GNC was a founding member of the All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC). [4]

In 1998, the GNC was successful in electing Clifford Marak to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Marak lost in 2003, but regained a seat in 2013 (he died in March 2015). [5]

The GNC is a member of the Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC), a coalition of groups supporting the separate state of Garoland. [6]

The Garo people, are a Tibeto-Burmese ethnic group inhabiting predominantly in Northeast Indian states of Meghalaya, Assam, Tripura and Nagaland, and in some neighbouring areas of Bangladesh, including Madhupur, Mymensingh, Haluaghat, Dhobaura, Durgapur, Kolmakanda, Jamalpur, Sherpur, Jhinaigati, Nalitabari, Gazini Hills Madhyanagar, Bakshiganj and Sribardi. Historically, the name Garo was used for wide range of inhabitant in southern bank of Brahmaputra but now refers to those who call themselves A•chik Mande or simply A•chik or Mande and the name "Garo" is now being used by outsiders as an exonym.They are the second-largest tribe in Meghalaya after the Khasi and comprise about a third of the local population.

Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) is an autonomous district council in the state of Meghalaya in India. It is seated at Tura and covers East Garo Hills district, West Garo Hills district, South Garo Hills district, North Garo Hills district and South West Garo Hills district; is one of the three Autonomous District Councils within Meghalaya, and one of twenty-five autonomous regions of India. The total area of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council is 10,102 sq km having a population of 1,394,362 as of 2011.

Ampati is a district headquarters of South West Garo Hills of Meghalaya state in north-eastern India. South West Garo Hills is curved of present West Garo Hills on 7 August 2012. It is located at the latitude of 25º27.505 and longitude of 089º56.456 and is 52 km away from the district headquarters Tura of West Garo Hills district, Meghalaya. The hill region is mostly inhabited by the Garos, while in the foothills there are Hajongs and Koches. The second largest ethnicity after Garos is Hajong. The district is surrounded by South Salmara district of Assam and Kurigram District of Bangladesh. South West Garo Hills has approximately 35 kilometres of international boundary with Bangladesh on the south and western side. Nearly one third of the total number of villages of the district is declared as border villages by the Border Area Development Department.

Martin M. Danggo is an Indian politician from the state of Meghalaya who serves as the current Minister of Public Works Department (Roads) in the Government of Meghalaya, and represents the 35th Ranikor Scheduled Tribe (ST) constituency in the South West Khasi Hills district in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Danggo was first elected to the Assembly as a representative of the People's Democratic Movement (PDM) in the 1998 Assembly election for the Langrin (ST) constituency. He switched parties to the Indian National Congress and was re-elected in 2003. In 2018 he resigned from the INC and joined the National People's Party.

Williamson Ampang Sangma, a Garo leader, former Chief Minister of Meghalaya, twenty-first state of India on 21 January 1972. He was also the first ever Governor of Mizoram among the Garos in 1989.

The Insurgency in Meghalaya is a frozen armed conflict between India and a number of separatist rebel groups which was taking place in the state of Meghalaya. The Insurgency in Meghalaya is part of the wider Insurgency in Northeast India, and was fueled by demands of the Khasi, Synteng and Garo people for a separate state.

The Krishnai River is a sub-tributary of the Brahmaputra River in the Indian state of Assam. The Krishnai river originates in the West Garo Hills of Meghalaya. The Krishnai River meets Dudhnoi River at Matia of Goalpara district and then flows as Mornoi River before its confluence with the Brahmaputra river.

The Indo-Israeli Agriculture Project (IIAP) is a bilateral partnership established in 2006 between Israel and Indian governments. India has chosen Israel as a G2G level strategic partner in the field of agriculture. It was established in cooperation with National Horticulture Mission, National Horticulture Board and Indian States Horticulture Departments, and Israel's Agency for International Development (MASHAV) and CINADCO which provides developing countries with Israel's experience in development and planning.

Legislative Assembly elections were scheduled to be held in Meghalaya on 27 February 2023 to elect all 60 members of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. The votes were counted and the results were declared on 2 March 2023.
