Geir Otto Pedersen (born 28 September 1955) [1] is a Norwegian diplomat,who is currently the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria.
Born in Oslo, [2] Pedersen is a cand.philol. by education and started working for the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1985.
In 1993,Pedersen was a member of the Norwegian team to the Oslo negotiations,which led to the signing of the Declaration of Principles and mutual recognition between the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and Israel. In the following years,from 1995 to 1998,Pedersen held several positions at the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1998,he was posted abroad,serving as the Norwegian Representative to the Palestinian Authority. [2]
Pedersen later worked for the United Nations in several roles,which included as the Personal Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Southern Lebanon from 2005 to 2007,and following as the Special Coordinator for Lebanon from 2007 to 2008. He also served the United Nations as Director of the Asia and Pacific Division in the Department of Political Affairs.
He returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as deputy under-secretary of state,then served as Norway's ambassador to the United Nations from 2012 to 2017 and to China from 2017 to 2018.
In January 2019,he started a tenure as the United Nations Special Envoy to Syria. [3]
In October and November 2024 Abir Haj Ibrahim was assisting Pedersen in briefing the United Nations Security Council on the situation in Syria as a result of the war between Israel and Hamas. Israel had made 255 attacks directed towards Syria including a bomb in Damascus. [4] [5]
Pedersen is married and has five children. [2]
The Shebaa Farms,also spelled Sheba'a Farms,also known as Mount Dov,is a strip of land on the Lebanese–Syrian border that is currently occupied by Israel. Lebanon claims the Shebaa Farms as its own territory,and Syria agrees with this position. Israel claims it is part of the Golan Heights,Syrian territory that it has occupied since 1967 and effectively annexed in 1981. This dispute plays a significant role in contemporary Israel–Lebanon relations.

The Syrian Constitutional Committee is a United Nations-facilitated constituent assembly process that seeked to reconcile the Ba'athist regime of President Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian opposition,in the context of the Syrian civil war,by amending the current or adopting a new Constitution of Syria. The UN hopes that this would lead to negotiations which would subsequently lead to a peaceful end of the conflict,which had been raging for more than eight years by the time of the committee's formation. The Constitutional Committee was formed with the formal approval of both parties involved—namely the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic and the opposition Syrian Negotiations Commission,with the facilitation of the United Nations.

On 7 December 2024,Syrian opposition Southern Operations Room forces entered the Rif Dimashq region from the south,and came within 20 kilometres (12 mi) of the capital Damascus. The Syrian Arab Army withdrew from multiple points in the outskirts. Concurrently with the advance towards Damascus,opposition Tahrir al-Sham and the Syrian National Army in the north launched an offensive into Homs city,while the Syrian Free Army advanced into the capital from the southeast. The opposition captured the capital on 8 December with minimal resistance and Bashar al-Assad fled to Moscow,marking the end of his regime in Syria.
The Riyadh meetings on Syria were convened on 12 January 2025 in Riyadh,Saudi Arabia. The high-level international and Arab gathering aimed to discuss the situation in Syria and explore steps to stabilize the country following the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad's regime.
