Geir Sveinsson (born 27 January 1964) is an Icelandic handball coach and former player who competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics and in the 1992 Summer Olympics. [1] [2]

He was hired as the head coach of Akureyri Handboltafélag in January 2019. [3] In August the same year, he was hired as the head coach of HSG Nordhorn-Lingen. [4]

In July 2022, he was hired as the mayor of Hveragerði. [5] He stepped down as mayor in March 2024. [6]

Pétur Karl Guðmundsson is an Icelandic former professional basketball player and coach. Standing 2.18 m (7'2"), weighing 118 kg (260 lb) and playing the center position, Pétur was the first Icelander and one of the first European players ever to play in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Often described as the greatest Icelandic basketball player of all time, he was named the Icelandic Basketball Player of the 20th century by the Icelandic Basketball Association in 2001 and in 2015, he was inducted in to the National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland Hall of Fame. Pétur was also a member of the Icelandic national basketball team from 1978 to 1992 but missed several years of competition due to FIBA rules banning professional players from playing for national teams.

Pétur Már Sigurðsson is an Icelandic professional basketball coach and a former player. He is currently the head coach of Skallagrímur. He is the former head coach of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna club Stjarnan and former assistant coach of the Icelandic men's national basketball team. He coached the men's national team during the 2013 Games of the Small States of Europe in the absence of Peter Öqvist. The team finished third with two wins and two losses.

Geir Hallsteinsson is an Icelandic former handball player who competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics. He played 118 games for the Icelandic national handball team, scoring 531 goals. He was named the Icelandic Sportsperson of the Year in 1968 and in 2016 he was inducted in to the National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland Hall of Fame.

The Tindastóll men's basketball team, commonly known as Tindastóll, is the men's basketball department of the Ungmennafélagið Tindastóll sport club. It is based in Sauðárkrókur, Iceland. As of the 2018–19 season it played in Úrvalsdeild karla. In 2015 and 2018, it was the runner up to the Icelandic national championship. On January 13, 2018, the club won its first major title when it beat KR in the Icelandic Basketball Cup finals. On 30 September 2018, Tindastóll defeated KR in the Icelandic Super Cup, 103-72.

Sverrir Þór Sverrisson is an Icelandic former basketball coach and player. A two-time Úrvalsdeild Defensive Player of the Year, he played several seasons in the Icelandic top-tier, winning national championship three times and the national cup twice. Following his playing career, he turned to coaching where he won several accolades and titles. As a coach he has won the Icelandic women's championship four times and the men's national championship once.

As a player, he played several seasons in the Icelandic top-tier Úrvalsdeild karla and was a member of the Icelandic national team. In 2021 he led Þór Þorlákshöfn to its first ever national championship.

The 2022–23 Úrvalsdeild kvenna was the 66th season of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna, the top tier women's basketball league on Iceland. The season started on 20 September 2022 and concluded on 28 April 2023 with Valur winning the national championship after beating Keflavík in the Úrvalsdeild finals, 3–1. Kiana Johnson of Valur was named the Finals MVP.
