Gel is an American hardcore punk band from New Jersey. Formed in 2018 as a side project of powerviolence band Sick Shit, Gel has released one full-length album, two EPs, one demo, and one split mini album. Huw Baines of NME credited them for "shaping the sound of hardcore in 2023". [1]
Gel has its origins in New Jersey powerviolence band Sick Shit, which was founded by guitarist Matthew Bobko and drummer Zach Miller. Sami Kaiser joined soon after. When Sick Shit's bassist departed from the group, the role was filled by Anthony Webster, who soon after switched to guitar. This lineup of Sick Shit began Gel in 2018 as a side project in order to pursue a more traditional hardcore punk style. [2] [3] Gel released their debut self-titled EP in 2019. [4] That same year, the band released a tape called HC For The Freaks. [4] The band released their second EP in 2021 titled Violent Closure. [4] Gel also released a standalone single in 2021 called "Mental Static". [5] In 2022, Gel released a split, Shock Therapy, with the band Cold Brats. On August 16, 2024, Gel released a 5-song EP titled "Persona" on new record label Blue Grape Music. [11] The EP's themes were inspired by the works of Carl Jung, particularly his concept of the shadow self. [11] "Persona" has been well-received by critics, with praise for its sonic evolution that incorporates a bolder production style while maintaining the band's aggressive hardcore sound. [12]
Gel play a style of traditional, fast hardcore punk. [1] [13] Their music sometimes makes use of elements of post-punk [14] and D-beat. [13] Unlike the predominant style in hardcore during the 2010s and 2020s, Gel's music leans heavily on the genre's punk rock roots. [10] Revolver magazine called their "fast, noisy and uncompromisingly energetic" style as "filling the void that's been empty in the broader hardcore landscape since the early days of Trash Talk". Metalcore is a broadly defined fusion genre combining elements of extreme metal and hardcore punk, that originated in the late 1980s. Metalcore is noted for its use of breakdowns, which are slow, intense passages conducive to moshing, while other defining instrumentation includes heavy guitar riffs often utilizing percussive pedal tones and double bass drumming. Vocalists in the genre typically perform screaming; more popular bands often combine this with the use of standard singing, usually during the bridge or chorus of a song. However, the death growl is also a popular technique within the genre.

To date, the band has released eight studio albums, with their most recent, Some of It Was True, released on October 13, 2023.
Ceremony is an American punk rock band from Rohnert Park, California. The band's current line-up features Ross Farrar (vocals), Anthony Anzaldo (guitar), Justin Davis (bass), Andy Nelson (guitar), and Jake Casarotti (drums). Ryan Mattos (guitar) left before the group's Matador Records signing in 2011, being replaced by Nelson. The band have released six studio albums to date, and have changed their sound considerably across their discography – ranging from elements of powerviolence, grindcore, hardcore punk, punk rock, garage rock, post-punk, indie rock and new wave. Pitchfork once wrote that "Ceremony are hell-bent on not making the same record twice", while Stereogum described the band as "a very good punk band executing old punk tricks to massive effectiveness".
Nails is an American hardcore punk band from Oxnard, California. The group was formed in 2009 by frontman Todd Jones, formerly the guitarist of Terror, along with bassist John Gianelli and drummer Taylor Young of Disgrace. They released their debut EP Obscene Humanity in 2009, followed by the studio albums Unsilent Death (2010), Abandon All Life (2013) and You Will Never Be One of Us (2016), and a split EP with Full of Hell. Nails have achieved widespread notoriety and critical acclaim for their savage and intense sound.
Harm's Way is an American hardcore punk band from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 2006. The band started as a side project, but ended up becoming a more serious and full-time band in their later years. Harm's Way has since released four studio albums: Reality Approaches (2009), Isolation (2011) and Rust (2015) and several EPs. On February 9, 2018, the band released their critically acclaimed Metal Blade Records debut, titled Posthuman. They have been recognized for their unique blend of metal, industrial, and hardcore music.
Knocked Loose is an American hardcore punk band from Oldham County, Kentucky, formed in 2013 and currently signed to Pure Noise Records. The band released their debut studio album, Laugh Tracks, in September 2016 through Pure Noise Records, which was followed by A Different Shade of Blue in 2019. Their 2021 EP ATear in the Fabric of Life incorporated elements of death metal and was released to widespread critical acclaim. They released their third album, You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To, in 2024.
Beatdown hardcore is a subgenre of hardcore punk which incorporates elements of thrash metal and hip hop. The genre features aggressive vocals, heavy, palm muted guitar riffs and breakdowns. The genre has its origins in late 1980s tough guy hardcore bands such as Breakdown, Killing Time, and Madball, and was pioneered in the mid-1990s by bands like Bulldoze, Terror Zone, and Neglect. The definition of the genre has expanded over time to incorporate artists increasingly indebted to metal, notably Xibalba, Sunami, and Knocked Loose. Later acts also feature slam death metal riffs.
Eric Whitney, known professionally as Ghostemane or Eric Ghoste, is an American rapper and record producer. He has released eight solo albums and three collaborative albums under his Ghostemane moniker, primarily merging elements of heavy metal, hip hop and industrial music. Whitney has also released music with a number of additional solo projects, pursuing styles including black metal as Baader-Meinhof, noise music as GASM, and electronic music as Swearr. He began his career in local hardcore punk and doom metal bands around Florida. In 2015, he moved to Los Angeles, California, starting a career as a rapper, under the moniker Ill Bizz. Around this same time, he was a member of the hip hop collective Schemaposse.
Vein.fm is an American metalcore band from Boston that formed in 2013. They are known for their frequent tours and have performed shows with groups such as Code Orange and Twitching Tongues while in Europe. In 2017 the band was signed onto Closed Casket Activities, who would issue their first full-length work Errorzone to positive reception among critics, even appearing on Revolver's early "Best Albums of 2018" list. The album also managed to peak at number 21 on Billboard's Hard Rock album chart. In July 2020, after the release of their remix album, the band announced it changed its name to Vein.fm.
SeeYouSpaceCowboy is an American hardcore punk band formed in San Diego, California, in 2016, by Connie Sgarbossa, Ethan Sgarbossa and Taylor Allen. Their name is taken from a phrase shown on many of the end title cards of the 1998 anime Cowboy Bebop.
Higher Power are an English hardcore punk band formed in Leeds, West Yorkshire in 2014. They have released two full-length studio albums, one EP, one live album and one demo. Their second album, 27 Miles Underwater, was their major label debut through Roadrunner Records. In a 2020 poll by Revolver magazine, they were voted the most likely contemporary band to breakthrough into the mainstream. They are a part of the New Wave of British Hardcore.
Angel Dust is an American rock group formed in Baltimore, Maryland in 2013, made up of members of Turnstile and Trapped Under Ice. They have released five studio albums to date; the most recent, Brand New Soul, was released in September 2023. The band have been signed to Roadrunner Records since 2018. In 2019, Billboard noted them as one of the most important bands in broadening the scope of what hardcore punk is. Kerrang! included their 2019 album Pretty Buff as one of their "25 Best Albums of 2019" and Loudwire named it one of the 50 best metal albums of 2019.
Jesus Piece is an American metalcore band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, formed in 2015. The band signed to Southern Lord Records in 2018 with the release of their debut Only Self. They have since toured with acts such as Code Orange, Knocked Loose, and Ghostemane. Their second studio album, ...So Unknown, was released in 2023.
Zulu is an American hardcore punk band formed in Los Angeles in 2019. Beginning as a solo project by multi–instrumentalist and principal vocalist Anaiah Muhammad, the band grew to also include Dez Yusuf (guitar), Braxton Marcellous (guitar) and Satchel Brown (bass). Zulu has released two EPs in addition to their 2023 debut album A New Tomorrow. In a 2023 article, Metal Hammer described them as the year's "most vital hardcore band".

Gulch was an American hardcore punk band formed in Santa Cruz, California in 2016. The band released only one studio album Impenetrable Cerebral Fortress (2020), as well as two EPs and one demo tape. They performed their final live performance on July 31, 2022, at the peak of their popularity. The New York Times credited them as one of the driving forces of American hardcore's "Rennaissance" in the 2020s.
High Vis is an English rock band formed in London in 2016. Formed by the members of various hardcore punk bands, the band blends the genre with other styles like post-punk, indie rock and baggy. They have released three studio albums and four EPs.
Drain is an American hardcore punk band formed in Santa Cruz, California in 2014. Beginning without a set musical style, the 2015 hiring of vocalist Sammy Ciaramitaro and bassist-turned-guitarist Cody Chavez led the band to embrace a crossover thrash sound. They have released two demos, three EPs and two full length albums. The New York Times credited Drain as a driving force of American hardcore's "renaissance" in the early 2020s.
