General Fiasco are an indie rock group from Bellaghy, Northern Ireland. Since their formation in 2006, they have toured with Little Comets, Fighting With Wire, The Wombats, One Night Only, The Pigeon Detectives, The Enemy, Jet and Kids in Glass Houses. They released their debut album Buildings on 22 March 2010 on Infectious Records and released their second album Unfaithfully Yours on 30 July 2012 on Dirty Hit.

History

Touring and recording (2007–2010)

In 2007, Owen Strathern and Stephen Leacock had been playing with The Tides and had already released an album due much critical acclaim. Leacock and Strathern hadn't enjoyed the music being played in the band and so the pair decided to form General Fiasco as an outlet for the pop rock they had desired to write. Owen's brother was brought in to play guitar alongside Leacock, with Shane Davey on the drums. Davey later moved to America and Leacock filled in as a temporary drummer but was not replaced since. The band had straight away begun gigging and also toured as main support to Fighting With Wire. Despite only being together for a few months, the band were named no.6 in Across the Line's top 10 local acts of 2007. In between touring and gigs the band were constantly recording demos and also releasing studio EPs. A demo in the summer of 2008 landed them a spot on the BBC Introducing Stage at that year's Reading & Leeds festival. Their first single, "Rebel Get By," was released in November 2008 and their second single, "Something Sometime," became Zane Lowe's "Hottest Record in the World". In 2009 the band signed to Infectious Records. NME included them as one of "the ten hopes for the near future."[ citation needed ] Since then they have been part of the BBC Introducing line-up at the Electric Proms in October 2008. [1] The band started to receive plays from Zane Lowe, Steve Lamacq, Colin Murray, Huw Stephens, John Kennedy, Rigsy on Across The Line, Jenny Huston and Sara Cox and was playlisted at Xfm. [2] They were later invited to perform an acoustic set at Jo Whiley's prestigious Little Noise Sessions in 2008. [3]

Buildings and new member (2010–2012)

Their debut album Buildings was released on 22 March 2010 to mixed reviews. The band played at SXSW in Texas. They were nominated for Best British Newcomer at the Kerrang awards. They played at T in the Park, Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds festivals, the Pinkpop and London Calling, and also supported Snow Patrol on their Homecoming Ward Park date on 5 June 2010. The band were nominated for a Kerrang Award for best British newcomer but lost to Rise to Remain. The band embarked on a tour of the UK and Ireland in October 2010, becoming a foursome with the addition of a new guitarist. [4]

On 6 September it was announced that the band had departed from previous record label Infectious Records and signed to indie record label Dirty Hit. It was around this time that the band won "Best Song" for "The Age You Start Losing Friends" at the first-ever Northern Ireland Music Awards that took place at Ulster Hall, Belfast on 2 November 2011. [5] The band released new EP Waves on 14 November 2011, [6] having just completed a tour of Britain and Ireland to promote it the previous month. The Don't You Ever EP followed on 4 March 2012, [7] after a short tour taking in Manchester, London and Brighton.

Unfaithfully Yours and split (2012–2013)

The band completed work on their second album, Unfaithfully Yours , on 22 March 2012 which had been exactly 2 years since the release of Buildings and announced it would be released on 30 July 2012, and a tour to coincide. They showcased some of the songs featured on the new album during their October 2011 and February 2012 tours and at several appearances at SXSW in March 2012, including the Northern Ireland showcase on Thursday 15 March 2012 [8] and the Music from Ireland showcase as B.D. Riley's on Friday 16 March 2012. [9]

On Wednesday 6 June 2012 General Fiasco headlined a free concert to celebrate the Olympic torch relay's stop that day in Belfast, after having passed through Northern Ireland and Dublin. [10] On 20 June 2012 the band released the video for "Bad Habits", their next single due out the same day as new album Unfaithfully Yours (30 July 2012). [11]

On 24 January 2013, General Fiasco cancelled their UK tour and announced they were to take an indefinite hiatus. They released a statement on their Facebook page "We are very sorry to announce that we must cancel the upcoming Jan/Feb tour. We have decided to put the band on hold while we take some time out after more than 6 years and hundreds of live shows." [12] [ non-primary source needed ] [13]

During the hiatus, the band played a few gigs with Duke Special. They also played a small gig in Belfast.

Dirty Pretty Things were an English band fronted by Carl Barât, a member of The Libertines. The formation of the band was announced in September 2005, after a dispute between Barât and Pete Doherty led to the breakup of The Libertines in 2004. Barât had worked with Vertigo Records and had previously revealed that his new project was with the label. Didz Hammond announced he was leaving the Cooper Temple Clause to join the band alongside Libertines drummer Gary Powell and guitarist Anthony Rossomando, who had filled in for Doherty following his departure from The Libertines. They played their first shows in October 2005 in Rome, Italy and Paris, France. They announced their split on 1 October 2008 and played their final shows during November that year.

<i>Buildings</i> (album) 2010 studio album by General Fiasco

Buildings is the debut album by Northern Ireland trio General Fiasco, and which was released on 22 March 2010. The band launched the album at the Mandela Hall in Belfast on the night of 21 March. The album appeared briefly at number 77 in the UK Albums Chart.

The Tides was an Indie rock band best known as the predecessor to Northern Irish band General Fiasco. The band was formed in 2002 by Paul McMillan on vocals/guitar and Paul Quinn on drums. Owen Strathern joined the group as bass player in 2004. Later the band included a live guitarist Stephen Leacock, who went on to play drums in General Fiasco with Owen Strathern. The group disbanded in 2007 due to work commitments and General Fiasco becoming more serious.

Films of Colour are an English alternative rock band, formed in 2008 at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford, Essex, England. They originally started gigging under the name of Spires but as there were other bands already established by this name, they later changed their name to Films of Colour. After seeing them at their second gig, they were taken under the wing of Phil Catchpole where he developed their sound and put them in the studio and finally on tour with Cage the Elephant. Paul Carey joined the band as a Co-Manager in 2009, but when Phil Catchpole left in 2010, Paul Carey continued on and took command as their sole manager. On 4 October 2010, the band released their first single "Actions" with the B-side "Circles" (both produced/mixed by Duncan "Pixie" Mills. The single was released digitally and on limited edition 7" Vinyl by Fierce Panda’s sister label – Label Fandango. The band's sound were compared to acts such as Radiohead, Muse, Coldplay, early Bloc Party and Swedish act – Miike Snow. Simon Williams, head of Fierce panda described the band "as the best band he's signed since Radiohead and Coldplay". Picked up as The Guardian’s New Band of the Day, Best of Myspace Winners, The Independent newspaper’s Barometer: One to Watch and Steve Lamacq’s Favourite New Band. There was radio support from 6 Music, Absolute Radio, BBC Radio 2 as well as holding the number 1 spot for two weeks on Amazing Radio

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Dirty Three</span> Australian instrumental rock band

Dirty Three are an Australian instrumental rock band, consisting of Warren Ellis, Mick Turner and Jim White (drums), which formed in 1992. Their 1996 album Horse Stories was voted by Rolling Stone as one of the top three albums of the year. Two of their albums have peaked into the top 50 on the ARIA Albums Chart, Ocean Songs (1998) and Toward the Low Sun (2012). During their career they have spent much of their time overseas when not performing together. Turner is based in Melbourne, White lives in New York, and Ellis in Paris. <i>Unfaithfully Yours</i> (album) 2012 studio album by General Fiasco

Unfaithfully Yours is the last studio album by Northern Irish indie rock band General Fiasco. Recorded at Start Together Studios in Belfast, Northern Ireland with producer Rocky O'Reilly, the album was released on 30 July 2012, on independent label Dirty Hit. It was the first album to feature guitar/keyboard player Stuart Bell and the first to be released through Dirty Hit Records.

Buffalo Sunn are a rock band from Dublin, Ireland. Signed to Reekus Records, they released their debut album, By The Ocean By The Sea, on 10 October 2014, which has garnered critical praise from Irish media. They are in production for their next album, due out in 2016.
