George Flaggs Jr. (born March 20,1953) is an American politician and the incumbent Mayor of Vicksburg,Mississippi. An independent,Flaggs won his first term as mayor in 2013 and was reelected in 2017 and again in 2021. [2]
Prior to becoming mayor,Flaggs was a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives from the 55th district from 1988 to 2013. He served in this capacity as a member of the Democratic Party. He was a youth court counselor in Warren County and a member of the Vicksburg Planning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals. [1]
In 2014,Flaggs married Valencia Jones,an employee of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center,in a small ceremony at Triumph Church. [3] He has two children from a prior marriage. [1] In March 2018,Flaggs left the Democratic Party and became an Independent. [4]

Vicksburg is a historic city in Warren County,Mississippi,United States. It is the county seat. The population was 21,573 at the 2020 census. Located on a high bluff on the east bank of the Mississippi River across from Louisiana,Vicksburg was built by French colonists in 1719. The outpost withstood an attack from the native Natchez people. It was incorporated as Vicksburg in 1825 after Methodist missionary Newitt Vick. The area that is now Vicksburg was long occupied by the Natchez Native Americans as part of their historical territory along the Mississippi. The first Europeans who settled the area were French colonists who built Fort Saint Pierre in 1719 on the high bluffs overlooking the Yazoo River at present-day Redwood. They conducted fur trading with the Natchez and others,and started plantations. During the American Civil War,it was a key Confederate river-port,and its July 1863 surrender to Ulysses S. Grant,along with the concurrent Battle of Gettysburg,marked the turning-point of the war.

The 1982 United States Senate elections were held on November 2,1982. They were elections for the United States Senate following Republican gains in 1980. The 33 Senate seats of Class 1 were up for election in 1982. A total of four seats changed hands between parties,with Democrats winning seats in New Jersey and New Mexico,and Republicans taking seats in Nevada and the seat of the lone independent,Senator Harry Byrd Jr.,in Virginia. Democrats made a net gain of one seat bringing them to 46 seats,while Republicans stayed at 54 seats for a majority. The Democratic ticket of incumbent mayor and businessman Greg Fischer was elected to his third and final term. He defeated the Republican ticket of engineer and former Louisville Metro Councilwoman Angela Leet.
The 2021 Anchorage mayoral election was held on April 6,2021,to elect the mayor of Anchorage,Alaska. As no candidate received at least 45% of the vote in the first round,the two candidates with the highest vote share,Forrest Dunbar and Dave Bronson,advanced to a runoff on May 11. The election was officially nonpartisan. Incumbent independent acting mayor Austin Quinn-Davidson,first appointed to the position in October 2020,was eligible to run for reelection to a full term,but did not run. The deadline to register to vote in the first round was March 7. Mail-in ballots were sent out starting on March 15. On May 21,2021,after a narrow loss,Dunbar conceded the race to Bronson. Bronson was sworn in on July 1.
