Gipps Ice Rise

Gipps Ice Rise ( 68°46′S60°56′W / 68.767°S 60.933°W / -68.767; -60.933 Coordinates: 68°46′S60°56′W / 68.767°S 60.933°W / -68.767; -60.933 ) is a roughly elliptical ice rise, 10 nautical miles (19 km) long and bounded by an ice cliff on all sides, lying at the edge of the Larsen Ice Shelf about 35 nautical miles (65 km) northeast of Hearst Island. The feature was discovered by William R. MacDonald of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), December 18, 1966, while on a photographic mapping mission of this area aboard a Super Constellation aircraft crewed by the U.S. Navy VXE-6 Squadron. The ice rise was first mapped from these photos by the USGS. The name was proposed by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Derek R. Gipps, a Senior Executive Officer with the British Antarctic Survey, 1961–73. [1]

Ice rise an elevation of the otherwise totally flat ice shelf

An ice rise is a clearly defined elevation of the otherwise totally flat ice shelf, typically dome-shaped and rising 100 to 200 metres above the surrounding ice shelf. An ice rise forms where the ice shelf touches the rocky seabed because of an elevation in the seabed that remains below sea level.. The ice shelf flows over the seabed elevation, completely covering it with ice, thereby forming an ice rise. The resulting tension forms crevasses around the ice rise.

Larsen Ice Shelf Ice shelf in Antarctica

The Larsen Ice Shelf is a long ice shelf in the northwest part of the Weddell Sea, extending along the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula from Cape Longing to Smith Peninsula. It is named for Captain Carl Anton Larsen, the master of the Norwegian whaling vessel Jason, who sailed along the ice front as far as 68°10' South during December 1893. In finer detail, the Larsen Ice Shelf is a series of shelves that occupy distinct embayments along the coast. From north to south, the segments are called Larsen A, Larsen B, and Larsen C by researchers who work in the area. Further south, Larsen D and the much smaller Larsen E, F and G are also named.

Kichenside Glacier is a glacier, 15 nautical miles (28 km) long and 3 to 5 nautical miles wide, flowing northeast into the southern part of the Hannan Ice Shelf on the coast of Enderby Land, Antarctica. It was charted from air photos taken from an Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions aircraft in 1956, and was named by the Antarctic Names Committee of Australia for Squadron Leader James C. Kichenside, RAAF, officer commanding the Antarctic Flight at Mawson Station in 1960.

Baillieu Peak is a peak, 1,380 metres (4,530 ft) high, that rises above the ice sheet 25 nautical miles (46 km) south of Cape Bruce and 10 nautical miles (19 km) west-southwest of Pearce Peak. It was discovered in February 1931 by the British Australian New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition under Mawson, and named for Clive Latham Baillieu, a patron of the expedition.

Clowes Glacier is a glacier 2 nautical miles (4 km) wide, which flows east to enter Mason Inlet, on the east coast of Palmer Land. It was discovered and photographed from the air in December 1940 by the United States Antarctic Service. During 1947 it was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition under Finn Ronne, who in conjunction with the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) charted it from the ground. It was named by FIDS for Archibald J. Clowes, English oceanographer on the staff of the Discovery Committee, 1924–46.

Confluence Cone is a small but conspicuous nunatak 4 nautical miles (7 km) southeast of Sickle Mountain, near the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947. It was surveyed from the ground by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1958, and so named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee because of its position at the confluence of several glaciers which merge with Hariot Glacier to flow into the Wordie Ice Shelf.

Noville Peninsula

Noville Peninsula is a high ice-covered peninsula about 30 nautical miles (60 km) long, between Peale and Murphy Inlets on the north side of Thurston Island in Antarctica. Delineated from aerial photographs made by U.S. Navy Operation Highjump in December 1946. Named for George O. Noville, executive officer of Byrd Antarctic Expedition, 1933-35.

Davis Ice Rise is an ice rise, 4 nautical miles (7 km) long, near the terminus of Smith Glacier, 8 nautical miles (15 km) southeast of Mayo Peak, Bear Peninsula, on the Walgreen Coast, Marie Byrd Land. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from U.S. Navy aerial photographs taken 1966 and from Landsat imagery taken 1972–73. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after Commander Arthur R. Davis, U.S. Navy, Supply Officer, Operation Deep Freeze, 1975–76 and 1976–77.

Postel Nunatak is a nunatak, 1,450 m, standing 8 nautical miles (15 km) southwest of Snake Ridge along the ice escarpment that trends southwest from the ridge, in the Patuxent Range, Pensacola Mountains. Mapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1956-66. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Philip A. Postel, meteorologist at South Pole Station, winter 1967.

Dvořák Ice Rise is an ice rise 1.5 nautical miles (3 km) in extent, rising above the ice of Mendelssohn Inlet in the southwest part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was first mapped, from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960, and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Antonín Dvořák, the Czech composer. (1841-1904).

The Galileo Cliffs are a line of east–west cliffs, 5 nautical miles (9 km) long, standing between Grotto Glacier and Jupiter Glacier, 7 nautical miles (13 km) west of Ablation Point, in eastern Alexander Island, Antarctica. They were mapped from trimetrogon air photography taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, and from survey by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, 1948–50. They were named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee from association with Jupiter Glacier after Galileo Galilei, the Italian astronomer who discovered the Galilean moons, the four named satellites of Jupiter (1564-1642).

Gardner Nunatak is a nunatak rising to about 1,670 metres (5,480 ft), 5.5 nautical miles (10 km) west-southwest of Tollefson Nunatak in the Yee Nunataks of Palmer Land, Antarctica. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy aerial photographs, 1961–68, and from Landsat imagery taken 1973–74, and was named in 1987 by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after Robert N. Gardner, a USGS cartographer who participated in surveys at Cape Crozier, South Pole Station, and Palmer Station, 1973–74.

Gaylord Nunatak is a nunatak rising to about 1,500 metres (5,000 ft), 1.5 nautical miles (3 km) north-northeast of Schmutzler Nunatak in the southeast end of the Grossman Nunataks, Ellsworth Land, Antarctica. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy aerial photographs, 1961–68, and from Landsat imagery, 1973–74. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1987 after Chauncey L. Gaylord, a USGS cartographer, 1942–76, Chief of the Compilation Unit in the Branch of Special Maps, working for many years in the preparation of Antarctic maps.

Hinely Nunatak is a small nunatak, isolated except for Graser Nunatak 1 nautical mile (2 km) to the northeast, located 16 nautical miles (30 km) east of the Sky-Hi Nunataks in Palmer Land, Antarctica. It was named in 1987 by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after John A. Hinely, Jr., a United States Geological Survey (USGS) civil engineer who, with William F. Graser, formed the USGS satellite surveying team at South Pole Station, winter party 1976.

Stapleton Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Stapleton Glacier is a glacier about 6 nautical miles (11 km) long flowing east from King Peninsula just north of Morelli Glacier. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) after Jo Anne Stapleton, United States Geological Survey (USGS), Reston, Virginia, geographer and map specialist, participated in Antarctic map production from the 1980s to the present, part of the USGS team that compiled the 1:5,000,000-scale Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer maps of Antarctica and the 1: 250,000-scale Landsat TM image maps of the Siple Coast area.

Soto Glacier is a glacier about 12 nautical miles (22 km) long, draining southeast along the southwest side of Strømme Ridge and discharging into Odom Inlet, on the east coast of Palmer Land. Mapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS) in 1974. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Luis R. Soto, Argentine oceanographer on the International Weddell Sea Oceanographic Expeditions, 1968 and 1970.

Tierney Peninsula

Tierney Peninsula is an ice-covered peninsula about 14 nautical miles (26 km) long, between Savage Glacier and Morgan Inlet in the east end of Thurston Island. The east extremity of the peninsula is Cape Annawan. These features were discovered on helicopter flights from the USS Burton Island and Glacier of the U.S. Navy Bellingshausen Sea Expedition in February 1960 and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN). The peninsula was named for J.Q. Tierney, oceanographer aboard the Burton Island on this expedition. The cape was named for the ship Annawan of the United States Expedition of 1829-31, which with the Penguin sailed west from the South Shetland Islands in February 1830, holding a course between 62S and 58S and exploring as far as 103W, northward of this cape.

Kenfield Nunatak is an isolated nunatak which lies about 8 nautical miles (15 km) southeast of the head of Cosgrove Ice Shelf and 17 nautical miles (31 km) east-northeast of Pryor Cliff, at the extreme northern end of the Hudson Mountains, Antarctica. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) from ground surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1960–66, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Richard E. Kenfield, a USGS topographic engineer working from Byrd Station in the 1963–64 season.

Laktionov Island is an island 2 nautical miles (4 km) long, lying 4 nautical miles (7 km) northeast of Jurva Point, Renaud Island, in the Biscoe Islands of Antarctica. It was first accurately shown on an Argentine government chart of 1957. The island was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1959 after Aleksandr F. Laktionov, a Soviet sea ice specialist in the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, Leningrad, 1927–65, who became head of the Department of Oceanography, Ice Forecasting and River Mouths.

Launch Rock is a submerged rock lying southwest of the Glover Rocks, off the south end of Adelaide Island, Antarctica. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee to commemorate the unnamed launch from RRS John Biscoe that was used by the Hydrographic Survey Unit which charted this area in 1963.
