The Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) is a travel index that ranks countries based on their performance in the Muslim travel market. [1] [2] The index is published by CrescentRating in collaboration with MasterCard. [3]
The Global Muslim Travel Index was started by Fazal Bahardeen in 2011 and is published annually by CrescentRating. [3] [4]
In 2017, GMTI covering 130 countries was published with Malaysia as the highest-ranked country in Muslim travel. [5]
In the 2018 report, GMTI estimated that there were around 140 million Muslim travelers worldwide. [6]
In 2019 GMTI rankings, Indonesia and Malaysia were ranked as the most Muslim travel-friendly countries. [7] [8]
In 2021, the ranking was expanded to 140 destinations. [9] The index ranked Malaysia as the top-ranked in the halal travel industry and noted changes in preferences of travelers such as the rise of contactless travel. [9]
In 2022, GMTI rankings were published again with Malaysia as the top-ranked country. [10]
In June 2023, GMTI 2023 rankings were published with Indonesia and Malaysia tied for first place. In third position was Saudi Arabia, followed by the United Arab Emirates in fourth place. Türkiye was in 5th place. [11]
The overall index is calculated based on a number of factors including the air connectivity, airport facilities, communication, the number of visitors, halal food options, travel environment, visa, and ease to access a place of worship. [3] [12]
In 2021 GMTI, the index also took into consideration factors such as travel corridors and bubbles. [9]
Tourism in Singapore is a major industry and contributor to the Singaporean economy. In 2019, 19,114,002 tourists visited the country, which was the highest recorded number of arrivals since independence in 1965. As of 2023, as tourist arrivals recovers from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were a total of 13,610,404 international tourists that have visited Singapore, which was more than twice the country's total population.
Medical tourism is the practice of traveling abroad to obtain medical treatment. Indonesia was ranked at 20th in the world tourist Industry in 2017, also ranked as the ninth-fastest growing tourist sector in the world, the third-fastest growing in Asia and fastest-growing in Southeast Asia. In 2018, Dénpasar, Jakarta and Batam are among of 10 cities in the world with fastest growth in tourism, 32.7, 29.2 and 23.3 percent respectively. The tourism sector ranked as the 4th largest among goods and services export sectors.

Tourism is an economic contributor to the Kingdom of Thailand. Estimates of tourism revenue directly contributing to the GDP of 12 trillion baht range from one trillion baht (2013) 2.53 trillion baht (2016), the equivalent of 9% to 17.7% of GDP. When including indirect travel and tourism receipts, the 2014 total is estimated to be the equivalent of 19.3% of Thailand's GDP. According to the secretary-general of the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council in 2019, projections indicate the tourism sector will account for 30% of GDP by 2030, up from 20% in 2019, Thailand expects to receive 80 million visitors in 2027.
Islam is a minor religion in Taiwan and it represents about 0.3% of the population. There are around 60,000 Muslims in Taiwan, in which about 90% belong to the Hui ethnic group. There are also more than 250,000 foreign Muslims working in Taiwan from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines, as well as other nationalities from more than 30 countries. As of 2018, there are eleven mosques in Taiwan, with the most notable being the Taipei Grand Mosque, the oldest and largest one.

The World Tourism rankings are compiled by the United Nations World Tourism Organization as part of their World Tourism Barometer publication, which is released up to six times per year. In the publication, destinations are ranked by the number of international visitor arrivals, by the revenue generated by inbound tourism, and by the expenditure of outbound travelers.
The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report was first published in 2007 by the World Economic Forum (WEF). The index measures the attractiveness of a country as a place to develop business in the travel and tourism industry, rather than a country's attractiveness as a tourist destination. The report ranks countries according to the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI). The TTCI scores from 1 to 6 the performance of a given country in each specific subindex. The overall index is made of three main subindexes: (1) regulatory framework; (2) business environment and infrastructure; and (3) human, cultural, and natural resources. The report also includes country profiles with key indicators from the World Bank, the World Tourism Organization and the World Travel and Tourism Council. From the 2021 report, WEF publishes the Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) as an evolution of the TTCI.
Tourism in Vietnam is a component of the modern Vietnamese economy. In 2019, Vietnam received 18 million international arrivals, up from 2.1 million in the year 2000. The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism is following a long-term plan to diversify the tourism industry, which brings foreign exchange into the country.
Halal tourism is a subcategory of tourism which is geared towards Muslim families who abide by rules of Islam. The hotels in such destinations do not serve alcohol, have separate swimming pools and spa facilities for men and women, serve only halal foods, and have prayer facilities in-room and in a common hall. Travel agents, while designing travel packages for this, follow guidelines of halal. Malaysia, Turkey and many more countries offer facilities in accordance with the religious beliefs of Muslim tourists in order to attract more customers. Currently, there exist no internationally recognized standards on Halal tourism.

The Henley Passport Index is a global ranking of countries according to the travel freedom allowed by those countries' ordinary passports for their citizens. It was launched in 2005 as Henley & Partners Visa Restrictions Index and was updated to Henley Passport Index in January 2018.
Tourism in the United Arab Emirates is an important part of the Emirati economy. In 2023, the tourism sector employed 809,300 people and contributed 220 billion dirham to the national gross domestic product (GDP), accounting for 12% of it. In 2024, the UAE was the 6th destination globally by international tourism receipts according to the World Tourism rankings, and it ranked 18th globally in the Travel and Tourism Development Index.
