Gore District Council is the territorial authority for the Gore District of New Zealand. [1]
The council is led by the mayor of Gore, who is currently Ben Bell. There are also eight ward councillors and three councillors elected at large. [1]
The council was established in 1989, directly replacing the Gore and Mataura Borough Councils and part of Southland County Council (established in 1885. [2] [3] ) as the Gore District, New Zealand
In 2020, the council had 334 staff, including 28 earning more than $100,000. According to the Taxpayers' Union think tank, residential rates averaged $2,163. [4]
Mataura is a town in the Southland region of the South Island of New Zealand. Mataura has a meat processing plant, and until 2000 it was the site of a large pulp and paper mill.

Benjamin Ryan Bell is a New Zealand politician who is the mayor of the town of Gore in the South Island. In October 2022, Bell was elected as Gore's youngest mayor at the age of 23 years, defeating the incumbent Tracy Hicks. In mid November, the Gore District Council rejected Bell's request to hire a personal executive assistant named Shanna Crosbie. Bell subsequently went on leave after his fellow councillors submitted a requisition requesting the removal of deputy mayor Stewart MacDonell.
