Central Otago District Council is the territorial authority for the Central Otago District of New Zealand. [1]

History

The council was established in 1989, through the merger of Cromwell Borough Council (established in 1866), [2] Alexandra Borough Council (established in 1867), [3] Naseby Borough Council (established in 1872), [4] Maniototo County Council (established in 1876), [4] and Vincent County Council (established in 1876). [4]

In 2020, the council had 154 staff, including 17 earning more than $100,000. According to the Taxpayers' Union think tank, residential rates averaged $2,156. [5]

Cromwell is a town in Central Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand. Cromwell is located on the shores of Lake Dunstan where the Kawarau river joins Lake Dunstan. Cromwell was established during the Otago gold rush and is now more known as one of the sub regions of the Central Otago wine region. In 2018, the town of Cromwell was home to a population of 5610 people.

The Manuherikia River is located in Otago in the South Island of New Zealand. It rises in the far north of the Maniototo, with the West Branch draining the eastern side of the St Bathans Range, and the East Branch draining the western flanks of the Hawkdun Range. The river continues southwest through the wide Manuherikia Valley to its confluence with the Clutha River at Alexandra. During the 1860s the Manuherikia was one of the centres of the Otago gold rush.

McIntosh who was elected in 1989, when following the local government reforms of that year, the Central Otago District Council was formed in the place of the previous county and borough councils of Central Otago.
