Gracefield Island, also called The Phoenix, is a 100 hectares (250 acres) city in Nigeria created via reclamation of land from the Lagos Lagoon. The city is a joint venture between Gravitas Investments Limited (the city developers) and the Lagos State Government. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10]

Overview

Gracefield Island is a city developed from the reclamation of 100 hectares from the Lagos Lagoon and is expected to accommodate 10,000 to 25,000 people. [11] The project, a joint venture between Lagos State Government and Gravitas Investments Limited, is located at the end of Chevron Drive, Lagos, and is connected to Lekki by its own highway. The Lagos State Government approved the development of Gracefield Island in 2016. [15] [16] [17] [18] [19]

Some companies with presence on the Gracefield Island are: Lafarge, Aspin, 9Mobile, Chevron Staff Coop, Zutari of South Africa, Samsson Group of Dubai, and HealthCare Outpost. [20] [3] The founder and Chief Executive of Gracefield Island is Mr. Olufemi Babalola and Chairman is Dr. Nu'uman Barau Danbatta, OFR, with Architect Ferdinand Agu, OFR, Peter Stephenson OBE, Leke Ojulari and Adetokunbo Adeyemo as directors.

Development Milestones

In 2016, it was reported that Van_Oord, a marine engineering company, was working on land reclamation aspect of the project had reclaimed around 30 hectares (74 acres) of land at a finished height of 1.8 metres (5 feet 11 inches). [21] [22] By 2017, the city developers unveiled its nearly completed site office buildings. [1]

Infrastructure

The island will be a green city with integrated public charging points for electric vehicles, dedicated cycle lanes, and pedestrian pavements to encourage cycling and walking as standard means of movement. [23]

Companies with presence on the Gracefield Island include Lafarge, 9Mobile, and HealthCare Outpost. [24] [25] 9Mobile is the exclusive provider of Fibre telecommunications service on the island. [26] [27] [28] [29]

Lagos Free Zone (LFZ) is a Free Trade Zone situated in Lagos that is promoted by Tolaram group. The Free zone is integrated with Lekki Deep Sea Port and covers 830 hectares of area in Lagos. Lagos Free Zone is located 60 kilometers to the east of Lagos city. Similar to other free zones, companies in LFZ can sell all their goods in Nigerian customs territory with no state or federal taxes charged without an import or export license. They can also repatriate their profits and dividends. Raffles Oil and Insignia Systems, Inc. were the first and second companies to come to the zone respectively. LFZ is located under the jurisdiction of Lagos State Government and the state government had provided the land for LFZ. It was started in 2002 with 215 hectares. Later in 2012, around 590 hectares more land was given by the state government. The construction, however, was handled by Lagos Free Trade Zone Company.

Lagos State in Nigeria is home to several notable tourist sites. Tourism in Lagos State was first fashioned in 1995 by the Military Administration; ever since then, tourism sites have received thousands of visitors.

Isimi Lagos is a planned city of Lagos State, Nigeria, under construction in Epe Town. The new city is designed to house up to 10,000 residents, with a completion timeline set to 2030. The city covers a land area of over 300 hectares (3,000,000m²) and is developed by Landwey Investment Limited. The city's name, 'Isimi', means 'Peace of Mind' in Yoruba language.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2024 Lekki flood</span> Natural disaster in Nigeria

The 2024 Lekki flood was a natural disaster in Nigeria that occurred on the 4th of July 2024. The heavy downpour of the rain which spanned for ten hours led to flooding which caused significant damage to residential areas in Ibeju-Lekki and other affected locations. The streets were covered in water, buildings collapsed, and cars were swept away.
