Grant Wells (born August 8, 2000) is an American football quarterback for the Virginia Tech Hokies. [1] [2] [3] He previously played for the Marshall Thundering Herd.
As a redshirt freshman in 2020, Wells completed 165 of 270 passes for 2,091 yards and nine touchdowns. He was named to the Maxwell Award watch list prior to the 2021 season. [4]
In 2021, Wells repeated as a redshirt freshman. During the regular season, he completed 280 of 419 passes for 3,433 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. [5] He ranked 12th in passing yards among all Division I FBS players. [6]
On January 6, 2022, Wells announced that he had transferred to Virginia Tech. [7] On August 17, head coach Brent Pry announced that Wells would be the Hokies' week 1 starter against Old Dominion. [8]

The Virginia Tech–West Virginia football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Virginia Tech Hokies and West Virginia Mountaineers. The teams met 53 times between 1912 and 2021, every year from 1973 to 2005, and as conference foes from 1991 to 2003 as members of the Big East Conference. The winner of the game receives the Black Diamond Trophy sponsored by Rish Equipment Company, headquartered in Bluefield, West Virginia. It was introduced in 1997 and was meant to symbolize the Appalachian region's rich coal heritage

The 2009 West Virginia Mountaineer football team represented West Virginia University in the college football season of 2009. The Mountaineers were led by head coach Bill Stewart and played their home games on Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown, West Virginia. The 2011 Marshall Thundering Herd football team represented Marshall University in the 2011 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Thundering Herd were led by second-year head coach Doc Holliday and played their home games at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. They are a member of the East Division of Conference USA. They finished the season 7–6, 5–3 in C-USA to finish in second place in the East Division. They were invited to the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl where they defeated FIU 20–10.
Seth Colton Doege is an American football coach and former quarterback, who is the current offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Marshall Thundering Herd. After playing college football for Texas Tech University, he was signed by the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 2013. On February 27, 2014, he was signed to the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. Doege was Texas Tech's starting quarterback for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
