Thundering Herd athletic teams compete in the Sun Belt Conference, which are members of the NCAA Division I. The school's official colors are kelly green and white. The Marshall Thundering Herd have won 3 NCAA national championships and one NAIA national championship.
Carl Lee III is an American former football cornerback who played in the National Football League (NFL). He was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the seventh round of the 1983 NFL draft, and played with the Vikings for all but his final season with the New Orleans Saints. From 1996 to 2005, Lee was the head football coach at West Virginia State and compiled an overall record of 34 wins and 75 losses (34–75) during his time with the Yellow Jackets.
William Morton Lyon is an American former professional football defensive lineman who played for the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Marshall Thundering Herd. He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs after going undrafted in 1997 but was waived before the start of the regular season. Lyon later joined the Packers' practice squad in 1997 and played in 59 games for the team from 1998 to 2002. He also appeared in 13 games for the Minnesota Vikings in 2003.
The Marshall Thundering Herd men's basketball team represents Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, United States. They compete in the NCAA Division I as a member of the Sun Belt Conference. The Thundering Herd are led by head coach Cornelius Jackson and play their home games at the on-campus Cam Henderson Center which opened in 1981.
The Marshall Thundering Herd football team is an intercollegiate varsity sports program of Marshall University. The team represents the university as a member of the Sun Belt Conference East Division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, playing at the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision level.

Alexander Bazzie is a Liberian former professional gridiron football defensive lineman who played for the BC Lions and Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football at Marshall University.
